Don't applaud Congress for failing

  • Follow Letters

We should be outraged at the activities of the federal government. It continues to break the law despite its recent rhetoric.

Congress failed in its primary responsibility -- to evaluate the president's budget and appropriate monies to fund constitutional activities of government.

Fiscal year 2011 began Oct. 1 with none of the appropriations bills passed. As is customary, Congress passed two continuing resolutions with deadlines of Dec. 4 and 18 to fund the government. The leadership then used extortion to force the rest of House and Senate members to vote for legislation they would normally defeat.

The line-item veto would not be necessary if Congress ever passed a "clean" bill. The bill to prevent tax increases on Jan. 1 forced Congress to extend unemployment compensation (UC) another 13 months. The 2 percent decrease in payroll deductions will be an excellent stimulus.

It is strange that putting more in workers' wallets was not tried earlier.

The bailouts of unions and mismanaged states obviously did not work. We are "heartless and without compassion for fellow Americans" if we do not extend UC to 99 weeks plus 13 months at Hanukkah and Christmas! It is possible that those folks on UC after 99 weeks are waiting for jobs that will never return.

Over three years of UC is as dumb as FDR's program to kill and bury hogs and dump milk down sewers in the 1930s when Americans went hungry. As Margaret Thatcher said, socialism [central planning] fails because eventually you run out of other peoples' money!

If you have read my letters to the editor, then you know I favor the Fair Tax as the needed stimulus. Barack Hussein Obama has been anti-business. Whether he is a socialist or simply anti-colonialist, his policies work against a business recovery since they are anti-capitalist. At least one federal judge has also agreed that the policies are also illegal (unconstitutional).

Chuck, we haven't had a congress worth applauding in a VERY long time. The only good thing I can say about this one is it finally ended, and many of them were sent home for good. Let's hope the next one actually listens to the people and doesn't try to abide by the Nancy Pelosi mentality that the people just don't know what's best for the country. Too bad her idiot constitutuents don't see that in her.

southernguy08, Pelosi lives

southernguy08, Pelosi lives in probably the most liberal district in this country. Her agenda is a reflection of their views. That will not change. Maybe Congress will.

Will a Fair Tax system

Will a Fair Tax system stimulate the economy if the money going out stays the same? Obama and Bush agreed to give businesses money for them to stay afloat at the end of '08 and beginning of '09 (GM is still alive because of it) how is that anti-business? More of the "blame it on some but not all." Money is being thrown in places it doesn't need to be and a fair tax will not solve it. Ramble on about something constructive please.....

b/4 one criticizes the fair

b/4 one criticizes the fair tax maybe they should understand its concept..and GM would still be a viable company if it was allowed to goe thru the normal bankruptcy laws.. and not a obama bailout that favored the unions and l left the legitimate bond holders in the cold.

"GM being alive because of

"GM being alive because of it" And that's good? A corrupt bankruptcy court, when distributing the remaining "Old GM" assets, instead of properly dividing it between the stockholders, instead gave the majority to the unions. What is remarkable is that with the "New GM" they are again issuing new stock and the idiot public is buying it. Are they aware when GM goes bankrupt again, the unions will get it again. Never buy GM stock ... almost sure to fail again.

The proposed "Fair Tax"

The proposed "Fair Tax" really is a Federal Sales Tax. I like the idea, but I don't trust the Government. They will wait a while and then say, "We really need some Income Tax too". You will say, "They won't be able to do that because when the FT rules are written, it will stipulate that can't happen". But, just look at how the Government is violating the Constitution, and then tell me, "You can trust the Government". In the end, all the Fair Tax will be is just another added tax on what we are already paying. And the Government, with tears in their eyes, will say, "We are so sorry, it just had to be done otherwise how could we afford 14.2% (1 in 7) on food stamps, 10 % on unemployment benefits, and who knows how many getting free government housing."

Politicians, big business &

Politicians, big business & unions are all getting rich off of this recession. The middle class and upper lower class of Americans are being destroyed in the process. Taxed to death, unemployed or under-employed.

Continual bickering between the left & the right will allow this to continue. We must find common ground, common candidates and vote these losers out of power!

Most American's would find that they are Libertarians. Check it out sometime. It's probably the closest we will all come to coming together.

Good point, RATHER. More money coming into the government will just mean congress will find more ways to spend it. A BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT would help in this endeavor. Too bad that will never be passed.

It seems strange that

It seems strange that Conservatives think this Congress is a failure. There can be no doubt that Southern White Christian Conservatives are the world greatest spiritual and political hypocrits on the planet. If you are poor, its not their problem. If you are hungry, plant a garden and starve until the vegetable reach maturity. If you are a college educated black, its because you robbed white Americans. If you are poor and white, its because you didn't move to Columbia county soon enough. If you are black and make more than $250K, its because Obama gave blacks a bailout he didn't give white folks. The only place to be a Christian is in an all white church. Anyone that thinks Steve Foley was wrong to desire sex with a teenage page in the Capitol Bldg, or Larry Craig purchasing homosexual sex in a bathroom airport, or Ben Harbin making a plea deal for a DUI is unpatriotic!! Southern White Christian Conservatives are worst than the muslims that attacked us. Conservatives are domestic enemies that lack all morals for the sack of politics. What will separate us from the love of GOD? An all white political machine dominated by the warped views of Southern White Christian Conservatives.....

CD, just curious, are these the same southern white conservatives as John Edwards, cheating on his marriage and fathering a child out of wedlock while he ran for president and his wife was fighting for her life against cancer? Maybe you're referring to that great southern conservative, Reverend Jesse Jackson, a family man who cheated on his wife and fathered a child out of wedlock while preaching morals to the nation? Liberals love to scream hypocrisy about conservatives, but hate looking in the mirror. Yeah, I'm laughing.

The Fair Tax includes the

The Fair Tax includes the repeal of the 16th Amendment. It replaces all Federal taxes. With the prebate it is not regressive as are the VAT, inflation and monetizing the debt. Ken Lay was a frequent visitor at the Clinton White House. A "balanced budget amendment" is meaningless with off-budget, Enron accounting!

I just saw on the news that

I just saw on the news that the 111th Congress amassed more debt than the first 100 Congress' combined.

Way to go guys! Way to spend us into the poor house!

As long as your moocher constituents, the unions, the environmentalists, the global warming kooks and the big businesses are taken care of don't worry about us average taxpaying citizens & small business owners. Just keep screwing us over until we all give up, then you can have your little commie empire you so dearly treasure.

Fight back people! Call your Congressmen & Senators constantly. I do. I'm sure they are sick of me by now but I'm gonna keep calling & demand fiscal discipline.
