Just what has happened to Augusta?

  • Follow Letters

I read this paper daily because I was born and raised there in Augusta.

I retired and built a house here in Germany, and from the things I read I must say that was the best move I have ever made. It appears that Augusta has gone to the dogs. Is there still a police force there in Augusta?

JOE, haven't you heard? Things are just wonderful, now that the "community organizer" is president. Come on home!

The writer has the right idea
Unpublished

The writer has the right idea and probably made the decision long ago while serving, however, the crime rate only reflects the conditions of the People. With eight yrs of Bush and the damage he did, the middle class is being wiped out by corporate capitalism, where wages are a little of nothing and folks at the top rake in the cash. The policies put in place by Bush has placed us on this horrible course and the crimes rate is only one symptom. Americans get the society they deserve.

If there wasn't corporate

If there wasn't corporate capitalism, there wouldn't BE a middle class. I don't think small businesses of the middle class have a complaint about capitalism, I think they have a complaint about being taxed out of existence to pay for things like welfare.

Joe. Two words. Consolidation

Joe. Two words. Consolidation and Demographics. Any working taxpayer with any brains and the means to do so left Augusta/RC for a better quality of life and better schools in Columbia County or North Augusta. The government structure dictated by our Charter as part of Consolidation guarantees a deadlocked, paralyzed, racially divided government. That is what we have had and will always have. All of the revenue gets divided up in back room deals between East Augusta and the good old boys downtown. Nothing gets done in the rurual areas. Taxpayers who can afford to will continue to leave. They are sucking the life out of the rural property owners in order to try to keep the old city and it's residents afloat. Meanwhile the blight keeps spreading south with both businesses and residents fleeing. But hey, we've got 7000 acres of empty residentially zoned land out here if someone is looking for a place to build.

Oh, and is there a police force? Well, yes but we keep cutting it's funding and furloughing officers and even if they manage catch a crook the judges (especially Jolly) put them back on the street before the officer can get back in his patrol car. Contract probation you know. It's a kickback thing.

JUSTUS, so, this is all
Unpublished

JUSTUS, so, this is all Bush's fault...again? I wish just once, you'd do more than your one a day "it's all Bush's fault" rants and actually debate an issue. As for corporate capitalism, if it weren't around, your "community organizer" could have never made it to the White House. FYI, the liberals have been in control of the pursestrings of this country since 2007. Guess you forgot that little fact...eh?

Bad as the downtown area is,

Bad as the downtown area is, there's no way I'd move to another country. I've been to Germany and lots of other countries in the Army and I'm nailing my shoes to the ground in Georgia... to play on a Lewis Grizzard line.

Davidson is the # 1 school in

Davidson is the # 1 school in the entire state of GA and the CSRA. AR Johnson is consistenly ranked in the top 10 schools in the entire state.

How does Columbia County or North Augusta have better schools?

Two schools out of how many?

Two schools out of how many? Please. The approach to education has been --since the seventies when I chose not to live in Richmond County because of the school system, buying instead over my head in Columbia County-- to take care of those two and run them AS schools; the rest of the system is a warehousing of future felons.

Joe, if you're white and make over $200K Obama has you in his cross hairs. You may want to enjoy Europe because Obama will attempt to make the US worse than where you're at now.

Three generations of reverse

Three generations of reverse eugenics to make up for what Hitler did has resulted in a cultural disaster, perhaps unreversible.
