Biased reporting hurts peace talks

  • Follow Letters

As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu negotiates with his coalition partners to accept yet another freeze on building, his counterpart, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, has rejected American efforts to move the peace process forward.

This past weekend, the Fatah Revolutionary Council concluded its fifth convention in Ramallah by declaring its refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, stating "The council affirms its rejection of the so-called Jewish state or any other formula that could achieve this goal."

The statement confirmed the Fatah council was categorically opposed to proposals for a land swap between Israel and the Palestinians, the basis for the peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan and the probable basis for any future agreement with the Palestinians. The council "saluted President Abbas for standing up against pressure aimed at resuming the peace talks without achieving the demands of the Palestinians."

The vast majority of news outlets do not report on any of Fatah's hard-line declarations. While news media usually respond quickly to steps taken by Israel that are perceived as potentially detrimental to the peace process, the silent treatment of the Fatah decisions reflects a media norm in which Palestinian incitement and intransigence often is downplayed or completely ignored.

The news media were happy to report, however, on the recent release of a Palestinian Authority study falsely claiming that the Western Wall was not part of the Temple Mount and thus has no Jewish connection.

When news reporters and editors fail to give space to declarations and indications of Palestinian extremism and intransigence, they help perpetuate prejudices against Israel. In this case, it hurts the peace process by misrepresenting the imperative for compromise by the Palestinian leadership and their public, thereby dooming hopes for negotiated progress.

Our current president has

Our current president has Muslim ties from his youth and his sympathies seem to lie with them, judging by his actions. Right now, that is Israel's second worst problem with the peace process. The "Palestinians" is the first. Not the people, so much, but the international decision to deem them adversaries of occupation of Israel.

We will have peace in the

We will have peace in the middle east when we end the $6,000,000,000.00 of foreign aid to Israel, Jordon and Egypt. Our "foreign aid" keeps all sides from making the hard decisions to make peace. This money that we borrow from the Arabs & Chinese.

GA, respectfully, ending this
Unpublished

GA, respectfully, ending this aid will end nothing. The "Palestinians" have the mindset of "100 years, 100 million lives to destroy Israel? No problem!" I've been to that country many times. The Israeli people are literally fighting for their survival, surrounded by enemies. If you're thinking, "So what?", I would say that Israel is the only stable nation in the Middle East. Again, if you're saying "So what?", stability in the Middle East means less likelihood of nuclear confrontation, which will ultimately affect us all! As for borrowing from the Arabs and Chinese, that is the fault of OUR elected leaders, not Israel's.

Ga values. I wish it were

Ga values. I wish it were that simple but I do agree, we need to end ALL foreign aid. We do not have the money.

However, I don't believe that will create peace over there. The muslims believe we should all convert to Islam. Only then will there be world peace. Well, unless you are a woman, gay man or young lady who is accused of wrongdoing and you get stoned to death or you get your nose & ears cut off. That doesn't seem very peaceful to me.

Good letter. I have wondered

Good letter. I have wondered why I read more about what Israel does to harm the "peace process" than what the other side does.

Obama is as much a Christian as anyone else who claims to be a Christian. Only God knows the heart.

Could it be your source of information? Have you considered expanding your base?

Another Jewish point of view.

Another Jewish point of view. Chronicle, you're about as fair and balanced as the FOX. When are you going to publish a credible Palestinian point of view?

Amelia, you are 100% right,

Amelia, you are 100% right, no one knows what inside the hearts but don't you wonder about why others judge Palestinians are wrong while they are trying to protect their family life and their shelter that Israel by using the most advanced military equipments donated from our tax money enforcing them to evacuate their own homes and go nowhere just to build a new settlement complex and import more Jewish people from Europe to take over somebody else home. We never heard that a single Jewish person had mistreated or been abused in any Muslim country, I met hundreds of them in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan etc... all of them are happy there and refuse to go to Israel believing that they can't do any better there. Tell me now if some one will evict you from your home to give it to me for free what do you do?
