Vote for Copenhaver is vote for progress

Thanks for your editorial on the activities of Mayor Deke Copenhaver ("Keep Deke," Oct. 14). Truly you stated activities and accomplishments during his administration.

Now I feel free to write about Deke Copenhaver the man: extraordinary.

He has done so much to promote race relations in Augusta -- not by talk or conferences and committees, but by simple action. He always focused on the issue, problems to be solved and work to be done. He is truly the mayor of all the people.

He has proved that he does not do things to promote himself or to be popular. He just works for the betterment of the people.

I was so impressed when he gave up his parking place for the handicapped, stating that he was a young man and could walk to his office. Later, he realized the city did not have lots of money, and he stated that he had not asked for a raise. How many people have much and just push for more?

His gesture not to seek campaign monies certainly says he seeks the job because of what he can do for Augusta. He is not perfect; he cannot solve all our problems, nor please everyone. But I know if we work together, and support him, he will be fair and honest, and will do his best.

A vote for this extraordinary man is a vote for progress.
