Vote for Copenhaver is vote for progress

  • Follow Letters

Thanks for your editorial on the activities of Mayor Deke Copenhaver ("Keep Deke," Oct. 14). Truly you stated activities and accomplishments during his administration.

Now I feel free to write about Deke Copenhaver the man: extraordinary.

He has done so much to promote race relations in Augusta -- not by talk or conferences and committees, but by simple action. He always focused on the issue, problems to be solved and work to be done. He is truly the mayor of all the people.

He has proved that he does not do things to promote himself or to be popular. He just works for the betterment of the people.

I was so impressed when he gave up his parking place for the handicapped, stating that he was a young man and could walk to his office. Later, he realized the city did not have lots of money, and he stated that he had not asked for a raise. How many people have much and just push for more?

His gesture not to seek campaign monies certainly says he seeks the job because of what he can do for Augusta. He is not perfect; he cannot solve all our problems, nor please everyone. But I know if we work together, and support him, he will be fair and honest, and will do his best.

A vote for this extraordinary man is a vote for progress.

Ruth B. Crawford

Augusta

Where is this guy's birth
Unpublished

Where is this guy's birth certificate? How can anyone be certain without proof or proper credentials to demonstrate the origins of birth. And giving up "his" parking place is not properly defined - that parking; that government vehicle; that fuel; that office - ALL belong to the PEOPLE! It is not "his" to give away. Good grief...and the question about "progress" would center on the question: Progress for whom?

I think the article stating

I think the article stating "progress"????? is correct. Life in Augusta is progressively getting worse. All the monies that have been wasted on this study or that study could be given to law enforcement to clean up the crime that has taken over Richmond County . LE cannot operate out of an empty basket. Petty thieves advance in criminal activity , hence murder? If we begin controlling the crime we can move forward and advance Augusta. It has to start be cleaning up the streets . I find it very noble that the parking place was given up however that does not help the citizens who are being forced to deal with criminal activity in their own backyards . I prepare snacks and cold drinks for the men who pick up the branches one a week , I took off my sweater that the clerk at the supermarket liked , washed it an took it back and gave it to her, this does not qualify me to run a city. Our extraordinary Mayor has done wonderful things, but we are all drowning in a pool of crime. Progress must begin in cleanup and then lets talk ballpark.

Let's just cut to the chase:

Let's just cut to the chase: A vote for Copenhaver is a vote for a taxpayer funded downtown ballpark.

""He has proved that he does

""He has proved that he does not do things to promote himself or to be popular. He just works for the betterment of the people.""\
Oh boy, I got a good laugh out of that. yeah, I'm sure that little PR stunt he pulled earlier in the month at Golden Harvest had absolutely nothing to do with self promotion.

George Snellin owns the

George Snellin owns the shopping center and has every right to rent to any legal business that can pay the rent. The thing to worry about is the increased use of drugs. Make the jail time so long that they will die on jail and the clinics will not be needed. Take the sellers and hang them right away. Who cares about them any way.

Ms Crawford I agree with you

Ms Crawford I agree with you and voted for him yesterday. He and his wife are fine people and I truly believe he works for the betterment of Augusta. Emerydan would not agree because he has a Harrisburg agenda but Augusta is much bigger than that area. The democrats keep killing each other but the mayor or the police can not stop that. It is a cultural thing and that can only be handled with a change in ideas of what is right and important.

Augusta city government is

Augusta city government is riddled with ex-cons in important positions. Deke disappears for 4 days during the biggest crisis Augusta has had in 40 years with the Cherry Tree riots. The media tries to find him, but he doesn't answer his phone until it's over. He later explains he had gone to the beach in SC. Extraordinary is the word for him all right.

76% of the current budget

76% of the current budget goes towards law enforcement.. How many millions of dollars does the Sheriff need?

The Sheriff and city needs to become innovating in attacking the crime problem.. Job creation, community centers/after school programs, and improving the school system can deter crime more than hiring extra police officers. Police are called to the scene ''after'' crimes are committed.

There is no money set aside for a future mix-use development.. The state owned golf and gardens property hasn't been auctioned off yet.
