Bible-quoters don't fully understand

  • Follow Letters

There seems to be an increase in attacks on the Bible as indicated in some recent letters to the editor.

The Bible is a book of history; a guidebook to live by; and, finally, God's written Word to the world. It is no wonder that many people cannot properly understand the Bible because it is a complex book and requires much study, even by those who love it. However, the primary reason many people cannot understand the Bible is that it is God's Word, and as such cannot be fully understood by the natural man.

Therefore, most people who want to use the Bible to support their points of view or to criticize the Bible are limited to just a few Scriptures that they think they understand. In most cases these Scriptures are not understood, and therefore taken out of context.

Throughout the Old and New Testament books of the Bible, the underlying theme is that Jesus Christ was the Messiah who was promised for the redemption of mankind. So if anyone wants to really understand the Bible, they must get to know Jesus Christ first. How do you do this? Find a church that has a pastor who preaches the sound doctrine of salvation as found in the Bible.

Wow. I didn't know Jesus was

Wow. I didn't know Jesus was mentioned in the old testament. And I sure didn't know the Bible was written by god him/her self, In fact I assumed that most people read from the Talmud being as how they were Jewish, as was Jesus. The real question is, if Jesus was Jewish, and a person wants to follow him, why aren't all christians Jewish?

I almost forgot. Why would

I almost forgot. Why would God write and publish a book that natural man could not understand? I would have thought he would want to write something everyone understood.

follower, how do you find

follower, how do you find that I deny others that matter? I call attention to facts to which the believer can deny or- learn!
So crates, ah, and one can find solace and hope elsewhere! To find hope there as John Haught, advanced theologian does, distorts the anthology in that the writers were literalists evidently themselves! Sure, Augustine and others could think otherwise just as Christians impute onto prophecies having nothing to do with Yeshua what they think, and as that stylist and not new atheist the late William Kaufmann would note that eisegesis is exegesis: people do read - and Haught himself insists that is ever the way- onto these scriptures what they themselves think. Reactionaries see no verses to see Biblical advocacy for government help to the needy whilst Jim Wallis of Sojourners notes all the verses in favor of helping the needy [ ignoring the ones approving of evil matters!].
So, I'll agree with him on this: to whom has much, much is demanded. Remember his silly advice to the rich man to give away all his goods: yes, help others ! But the silly part is to give away all when one could do as atheists Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are doing: give the money through responsible charities, yet keep making more money so as to give even more!
Fr. Griggs rests in his Socratic ignorance and humble naturalism.
Check out these blogs chasboy, grouse and other infidels and also any other serious inquirers:

anaximandes of the south.posterous
socrates. posterous
Except for Socrates and ignosticmorgan, these are named after ontological naturalists.
I call Carneades the first ignostic, because he exposes the factual vacousness of the God-term.
I inquire: where in these two posts do I possibly err? Remember that we infidel will not self- brainwash by first believing in that cult leader or that Holy Ghost in order to understand what we already quite-well understand! Oh, Theodore Drange has the argument from unbelief, which notes that indeed a real God would really make Himself understood through a better book, and John L. Schellenberg has the argument from divine hiddenness that eviscerates John Hick's argument from epistemic distance: that God will not overcome our free will with too powerful a presence; He has to be ambiguous.
Ah, when I look all around at Nature, I see only her hand- never His holding hers!
So much for the silly look around argument and the oh,how could there be such beauty were it not for a divine designer: and our bad backs and other imperfections- Hume's dysteological argument refutes that sophistry!

thyroxin, the only ones

thyroxin, the only ones desperate are us sinners in need of a saviour. I pray that you find yours. You sound like you have had a very difficult life, I am sorry for that. Even in your hatred for Christ, He still loves you and wants to redeem your life.

thyroxin, Christians

thyroxin,
Christians sometimes do lead difficult lives, but, for the Spirit filled Chrisitian; there is joy in the midst of the circumstances!

All of the problems that you stated are difficulties of the human race, which includes all...believers and non believers. From the sounds of your postings, it appears that you may be struggling in some of these areas yourself.

As for living in la la land, I minister to my family, to my friends, serve my church, serve my community, visit the sick and the imprisoned. BUT, when God provides the lala land time for me, I allow myself to enjoy it. It is His gift to me, and a beautiful respite. I love my God, myself, family, friends and others...in that order.

Friend, God is the Good News, not any person, Christian or otherwise.

Chasboy asks :- "Why would

Chasboy asks :- "Why would God write a book that no one can understand?"

The is the point exactly Chasboy. He didn't. The Bible is not, as some would have me believe, a book of directions for mankind. It a book of directions for each individual. An owners manual for the soul, so to speak. The beauty of scripture is that it is exactly what each person considers it to be, just like God.
If someone believes that God does not exist and the Bible is a book of fairy tales, then for that person God does not exist and the Bible is a book of fairy tales.
If one thinks that God and the Bible are too complicated for man to understand, then God and the Bible will be too complicated for that man to understand.
If another believes that through the study of scripture he shall gain a greater understanding of God, then he shall gain a greater understanding of God through the study of scripture.
Still another may be so conceited to believe he has a perfect understanding of both God and scripture, therefore all the study in the world is useless because the individual believes he has nothing else to learn.
As each progresses on his/her spiritual journey, that person will experience an increase in understanding of both scripture and God. Notice neither God or scripture changes, just the understanding will change. So in effect, God has written a book that applies to six billion different people, a book that gives each person one-on-one guidance and direction and does so exactly at the level of their individual spiritual understanding.

dominionfs, You are living

dominionfs,

You are living proof of what an inspired man of God can write.

You are being quoted today; and since I don't know you; I am quite certain you will be happy with the credit being given to the Lord. The best description I 've ever read...thank you dominionfs.

It's nice to be so secure in

It's nice to be so secure in what I believe that I don't have to constantly verbally attack those who hold different beliefs. That must be exhausting.

In fact, it's a great affirmation of my beliefs to see how insecure some of you Christophobes are about your own. Ha.
