Don't choose laws you want to obey

  • Follow Letters

We Americans always have welcomed immigrants from other parts of the world, and I am confident we shall continue to do so.

It is not asking too much, however, to expect those who enter our borders to do so legally as those before them have done. No one has given a reasonable explanation as to why Latinos should be an exception. If they are not required to obey our laws, why should African-Americans, Asian-Americans and others be expected to obey them?

The fallacious charge that attempts to enforce our immigration laws are "racist" gives us a new example of absurdity. That ridiculous charge itself reeks of racism.

No nation can long survive when its people obey its laws only when they like them. Any nation is healthy to the degree that an ever-growing number of its people live as law-abiding citizens.

Great idea in theory, and not

Great idea in theory, and not so long ago, in practice as well.

Nowadays, people in national leadership are so determined to be open-minded about everything that their brains have fallen out.

How about comprehensive

How about comprehensive immigration legislation ? How about we go back to George Bush's call for legislation in fall of 07. How about we 'DO' something at the Federal level where immigration law is constitutionally authorized. Or do we just keep complaining because it feels good to have something to 'complain' about... to much yak, yak, yak.. and OH how it serves those who want POWER... keep the people agitated.

Are you aware that the letter writer, G. Daniel McCall, is the retired pastor of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church? A Christian wrote the very letter you think CSRA Christians aren't going to like.

Faithson..there is no need to "reform" the current immigration law......just enforce it. What good would it do for the Federal Government to pass yet another immigration law that they won't enforce? Heck...they are furious that AZ is enforcing the law and doing everything they can to stop them!

All you have to do is drive around at the speed limit and see how many Americans don't think certain laws apply to them.

If we were to use the Federal Government's logic concerning the traffic laws, they would not be enforced because we couldn't possibly enforce all of them.

They are not breaking the law, it's the people who hire them. They come here for the jobs. You won't see business lobbies pushing for immigration reform because it is a free lunch for business. And if the gov picks off a few Mexicans it makes it look like they're doing something constructive about it.

Most of these people don't even have a grade school education and you expect them to understand immigration law or its consequences? You people get a grip.

I have to agree with

I have to agree with jiclemens on this one. Yes, we know these people are "illegal" aliens, but it seems like the best way to resolve the problem is by dealing with the American citizens who provide jobs and create an incentive for illegals to stay here. Business owners should report illegals rather than making a profit off of them.

jiclemens the illegal

jiclemens the illegal criminals certainly do "get it". They know that if they come here they can have a child, then voila! The child is a US citizen (with full welfare & food stamp benefits compliments of the U.S. citizens & taypayers). They know that if they come here they can work & pay no taxes. They know that if they come here they get "free" healthcare.

Just because they have no education doesn't mean that they don't talk amongst themselves enough to know to run across the border when pregnant or looking for tax-free work and free healthcare. I'm sorry they are broke, poor & hungry but America can't solve the world's problems.

You are right on this point, we need to go after employers too. Put up a massive fence and guard it, fine & jail employers for hiring the criminals, repeal the anchor baby program and give the criminals (including those in prison) a one-way ticket home.

Illegal immigration should be

Illegal immigration should be handled exactly the way the federal government handled toxic waste dumps. First they stopped the toxic waste dumping and then they started slowly cleaning up the old toxic waste dumps. First we need to seal the borders and stop the illegal immigration and then we need to figure out a sane way to address the illegals that are already here. Keep the ones that are working and paying taxes and give them a path to citizenship. Deport the ones who commit felonies and cut off welfare payments to non-citizens. If you just did that last one, cut off welfare payments to non-citizens, you would have to open up a big gate on the southbound lane.

Where do you people hear this tripe? For the past month this paper has scapegoated gays, non-Christians, blacks, yankees and now furners. Most Mexicans have a stronger work ethic than Americans. I'm glad to see everyone here is at least an equal opportunity bigot.

I think the biggest problem

I think the biggest problem is people use politics to confuse illegal immigration and legal immigration. If you want to come here work and pay your way I have no problem with it. Don't give me that, "they don't know they are breaking the law because they have no education" thats a load. If they didn't know they weren't breaking the law then why sneak? Any employer found to be hiring illegals should be jailed and forced to pay a high penalty. They aren't ripping the government off they are ripping the taxpayer off. This isn't rocket science people....

McCall, you left out Euro-Americans, but I'm sure it was just an oversight on your part. When I lived in Boston, there were entire neighborhood blocks of illegal Irish immigrants.

jiclemens, ‘tigger, when you are desparately poor and hungry and some schmuk is dangling an offer to quadruple your income across the border, talk to me then.’
After reading more I mostly agree with jiclemens on this one & I do apologize for what I wrote earlier. I traveled to Mexico several times on business. Mexico City has a lot of poor people but 30 minutes out of the city it is 3rd whole country. People are living like our ancestors did 200 years ago in shacks with no electricity or running water and only the food they grow. I don’t blame them for coming to the US but I do blame our government for not enforcing the law.
The 2nd large source of revenue in Mexico is money being sent back from the US by legals and illegals. The drug trade might be 2nd by now.
We need to close the border and set up a reasonable workers program. Then figure out what to do with the illegals already here. Punishing our citizens that hire illegals should be done. It’s scary what might be coming across out border.
I feel sorry for the poor people in Mexico but the US can’t take all the world’s poor. Go to China and look around the country side it is as bad as Mexico.
