Socialism? No, blame the Republicans

  • Follow Letters

I just finished reading Andy Windham's letter "Socialism slowly trapping our country" (May 11), and Mr. Windham is pointing the finger, concerning the $12.4 trillion debt, in the wrong direction.

We had socialistic programs -- such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Tennessee Valley Authority -- many years before 1980, when we owed $1 trillion. In 1980, Ronald Reagan promised to balance the budget in three years. The first thing when he came into office was to cut taxes on the rich (trickle-down economics), and eight years later when he left office the debt was $4 trillion. In came George H.W. Bush ("Read my lips; no new taxes"), and when he left four years later, we owed $5 trillion.

Bill Clinton came in, and when he left eight years later we still owed $5 trillion, with a treasury full of money with a plan to pay off the debt in eight years.

In came the cowboy George W. Bush, who wanted to be -- had to be -- a wartime president. Only thing wrong: the war he started was on borrowed money, mainly from the Far East. The national debt soared from $5 trillion to $12 trillion, and he left an economy that drove the debt even higher during his administration.

I hate to tell Mr. Windham, but it looks like socialism is not the root of the problem on our national debt, but the Republicans in office. The country could not have stood eight more years of Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin in the White House if history is an indicator.

By the way, I noticed that Mr. Windham didn't mention Social Security and Medicare as a socialistic problem in his letter.

Geeez, Mr. McGaughy, do you

Geeez, Mr. McGaughy, do you really enjoy beating your head against of wall of solid, steel-reinforced concrete? The dolts that will respond negatively to the facts in your LTE couldn't possibly absorb the truth if it were inscribed in the concrete that encases their crania. You'd be better advised to vote against the party of "NO!" in November, and again, in 2012. Smile! GGpap

Who controlled the PURSE

Who controlled the PURSE STINGS of the Government (The house of Representatives) under Reagan? Why that would be Democrates..Reagan could not increase or decrrease spending the House and Senate (Under Democratic control) increased spending and Reagan actually shut down to government to stop the Democrates waste. During the time when welfare was cut and the budget got balanced who controlled the PURSE STRINGS, i.e. the Senate and the House? Why that would be REPUBLICANS! Who talked George the First into raising taxes to be bypartisan (and help reduce the imbalance in spending) and then beat him over the head with it? That would be Democrates (and they are still doing it, just read the letter)! It is very easy to blame Bush for 9-11 and the cost of fighting the War in Afganistan. Please don't forget that UNDER CLINTON these folks Bombed the USS Cole , Two Embassies in Africa, the World Trade Center and Kobar Towers with NO RESPONSE from Clinton..This is a rewrite of history to say the least..The morgage melt down was due to writing morgages for unqualified barrowers started by Carter and inforced by Clinton with Obama being one of the lawyers invovled the suing Citi Bank (Byruck-Robinson vs Citibank) to force Citibank to write loans to unqualified barrowers! Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac just got a few Billion more dollars in bail out money and have cost tax payers almost a trillion Dollars (huffpostfund.org/.../why-fannie-and-freddie-continue-cost-taxpayers-billions). Remmember when Bush and McCain tried to warn Barney Frank and Chris (country wide)Dodd about Fannie and Freddie they assured them it wasn't broke..Under Obama and the Democratic leadership Fannie and Freddie will NOT get further regulated..Don't forget that CEO Franklin Raines walked out (after crashing Fannie Mae) with a 6 million dollar bonus! This letter is fantasy land..yes Bush over spent but Obama is making Bush look like a penny pinching old lady. Obama and the Democratic controlled congress (read purse strings) have increased the national debt more in 18 months than ALL other administrations combined..and they aren't stopping!!!!! Yet people like Jim continue to say nothing about Obama and the Democrates over spending as if two wrongs make a right..

Jim one quick question, If I

Jim one quick question, If I buy an annuity as part of my retirement and pay into it for 44 years retire and start collecting the money from the annuity is that socialism or something I arranged? Social Security was supposed to work that way UNTIL the DEMOCRATES put the social security trust into the General Fund to fund the government!

So, as a government educated voter, you feel that taking a series of barley related facts and arranging them to make a very common CNN story makes you look informed? What a difficult way to get through life. However, Jim, if it's any consolation, you come across as a convinced Dem. Happily, you're a rapidly dieing breed.

This letter hits the nail

This letter hits the nail squarely on the head! President Obama is having to spend all of his time fixing the disasters left by the Bushies. Republicans are only going to watch out for the wealthy, big corporations, big banks, and big oil. It is just now coming to light that the very agency which was supposed to oversee the oil drilling was packed with Bush appointees; and they were partying with the oil company executives, the very people they were supposed to be regulating! Another mess President Obama will have to fix. Does anyone wonder why we haven't heard Dick and Liz Cheney comment about this oil spill mess? We probably won't, but it gives me a pretty good idea about what Cheney's secret White House meetings with the oil companies were about! How's that "Drill, Baby, Drill" thingy working out for you?

The writer has to be kidding.

The writer has to be kidding. Go back and run those numbers again and loudly announce which party was in charge of Congress during those periods. I also noticed the writer failed to calculate the added debt of the current Communist regime. And it is apparent the writer does not have the mentality to understand government programs that were PAID into by the participanats vs. socialist giveaway programs based on redistribution of WORKING PEOPLE'S money. Clearly the Communist Democrat party gets the blame for Social Security being broke since they are the ones that robbed the trust fund. Any idiot can look at the debt ALL of the other presidents and congresses have put us in and then look at the debt burden Obama and the Democrats have stuck us with in 18 months and come to the conclusion that we elected the wrong people no matter who was running. We made a tragic and maybe unrecoverable error in 2008 and hopefully the majority of the voters now realize that. We continue to hear all of the support for these socialist programs and deficit spending from the same Communist and Union leaders that make the same aruguments that their counterparts in Greece made while they were in financial collapse. We could have elected anything or anybody and it would be better than what we have.

Well gang, here is the most

Well gang, here is the most ignorant and deluded statement that I have read here in some time. "President Obama is having to spend all of his time fixing the disasters left by the Bushies." I find it absolutely incredible, that some folks posting here are so totally ignorant of the facts, and continue to spin leftist bilge ad nauseam. OMG...please spare us any more of your tiresome blame GW for everything rhetoric! When will you people EVER take responsiblilty for anything???? Several Islamic extremist terrorist attacks on American soil, Doubling the national debt in 15 months!, Rampant and ongoing unemployment, Ramming another UNFUNDED entitlement program through congress, continual lies and promises unkept, sweetheart deals and appointments with the unions, and now, after all that, we have at least one poor, deluded person who now has the audacity to even blame GW for the current oil spill in the gulf??? Even after the hearings in DC have implicated the governement watchdog agencies in improper relationships with the oil companies?? Congress controls these agencies, not the POTUS! Look, I enjoy a spirited debate, but when you are this out of touch with reality, there is no point. Mr. McGaughy, with all due respect sir, you are either deluded or totally brainwashed to the point where no amount of truth will ever sway you from your viewpoint. However, I am gratified that most people understand that, and just like most of what passes for news these days, they just discard it, as they would with any other piece of worthless trash.

Fascinating! The debt

Fascinating! The debt ballooned under Bush because of UNFUNDED WARS!!! Never in our history have taxes been reduced during wartime! There was no campaign to promote War Bonds, no sacrifice required, no taxation to fund these wars, no concern with payment source. When Bush was asked what the people could do to support the wars his answer was to go out and spend!! You see where that got us!

It really kills me how Dems

It really kills me how Dems like this letter writer say things like starting a war on borrowed money. Yet you give and give to non productive freeloading citizens daily and to illegals, no its not borrowed, its stolen and wasteful. Not to mention, how much did it cost this country for 911, that the dems could have prevented but didn't? Do the 3000 lives lost mean nothing to you? You think Clinton didn't cost us a dime? He cost us 3000 lives, you know working people, and the money to clean up the disaster in more ways than one! Obama continuing to spend to help people who refuse to help themselves with hard working peoples money. It's the Repubs fault? You need to wake up out of your dream!

Hey Jim McGaughy did you come

Hey Jim McGaughy did you come up with this advanced analytical thinking all by yourself? This stiff is very good. This must have taken you hours to arrive at this. But you left out a few minor facts. Like the 9/11 attacks, Terrorist organizations that have popped up all over the globe in the last 25 years, The 1993 bombing of the Trade Center, Jimmy Carter (I noticed you left this moron out of your rant) So when you blame the republicans and our debt make sure you include the events and the facts that have put us where we are. Wasteful spending? I do agree with you on this subject and one fact for sure is that this Democratic Congress has a Black Belt in spending and giving themselves raises. Why not start with the root of the problem on this subject and that is our Congress which just happens to be controlled by the Dems since 06.

Tigger, provide me with a

Tigger, provide me with a link to your source proving that the debt tripled in 15 months---and no, not glennbeck.com Are you aware that the cost of a rifle used on the battlefield in our wars has a price tag of $37,000? Contracts awarded long before Obama. The days of the thousand dollar toilet seat are still with us as long as the Military Industrial complex has access to Federal Funding(forewarned by Eisenhower) and the need to create wars so that they can deplete their toys and sell new ones. Remember that in the Bush Budgets, wartime expenditures were excluded form the Annual Budget. They were funded with emergency appropriations which did not fall under the scrutiny of the Congressional Budget Office. This is not the current administration's practice, thus a seemingly larger sum being spent since expenditures are now included in the annual budget. The fact is that the nation is being driven to the brink by the cost of UNFUNDED WARS. This is bin Laden's stated plan. So far it looks like BIN LADEN IS WINNING! Thanks George Bush!
