Name-calling doesn't solve our problems

  • Follow Letters

How could The Augusta Chronicle's editorial staff justify printing "Right-wingers hide behind patriotism" (March 30)? This letter is nothing more than left-wing, hate-mongering vitriol and name-calling that contributes nothing to the ongoing debate on the issues facing our nation.

As my mother always used to tell me: If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. The modern corollary to that sentiment would be: If you have nothing constructive to add to the discussion, please keep your mouth shut.

Name-calling and hate-mongering only cloud the issue and prevent us from coming to a consensus.

Mr. Moore, I do agree that

Mr. Moore, I do agree that this letter was just exactly what you said it was, and we are both on the same page about the name calling. However, in the AC's defense, it is their responsibility to air both sides, and it would not be right to censor, just because of the name calling, however distasteful. I do agree that there is no constructive use for this kind of rhetoric, but I must defend the writer's freedom of speech, and the paper must publish both sides, to be fair.

That's the bottom line,

That's the bottom line, TheFederalist. The left has to identify their opposition in whatever manner they deem comfortable to themselves. The reason behind their language is why they have opposition.

The most vitriolic rhetoric
Unpublished

The most vitriolic rhetoric to be found comes out of the mouths of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter to name a few. Though I don't remember the letter in question, it sounds like the right can dish it out, but not take it...

I agree fully that insults

I agree fully that insults and slanders/libels do nothing to benefit the discourse, but that realm is hardly occupied solely by any particular school of thought. Closed-minded folks and ignorant founts of rage occupy every part of the political spectrum. To believe otherwise is to flirt with becoming one.

The right has called Obama a Muslim, a socialist, a communist, a Nazi, and a foreigner--all because he has signed a law to outlaw insurance fraud. Now the right can't take a little constructive criticism?

Well Rhetor, Mr. Hussein has

Well Rhetor, Mr. Hussein has been a muslim, for his entire early life, schooled in the religion and tutored by his peers, and he has never renounced that religion. He later became a member of the church run by his mentor Wright, because it was as radical as he is, and it was needed cover as he moved forward with his political career. He is now, and always has been a socialist in thought, deed, and association, and that is documented fact. He is also a foreigner, being born and raised in a foreign country, and only able to advance due to the largesse of the US government, and their benevolence towards immigrants. Even his American birth record and citizenship is still in doubt. I am still not sure about the nazi part, but the way he is going, even that is still a distinct possibility. Not only that, and although we knew he was before, he has now removed all doubt. He is an official liar, on the record, not even willing to tell the truth on the recent government census form. Imho, he is both pathetic and revolting, and I am ashamed that he is POTUS.

Rhetor, “The right has called

Rhetor, “The right has called Obama a Muslim, a socialist, a communist, a Nazi, and a foreigner--all because he has signed a law to outlaw insurance fraud.” I read Obama’s book Dreams from My Father. So I already knew that he was a Muslim, Marxist and socialist. That was the reason I did not want him to become president. Read the book.

I was downtown on Broad at a book store and picked up his book, Dreams from My Father, started skimming it, because I had heard his name mentioned a time or two and wondered if he was someone I hoped would run for President. It didn't take long before I was practically throwing the book back on the shelf, in horror at the prospect he might run for anything. Unfortunately, the nightmare came about anyway. I don't know how anyone can read this book and elect him to any office in the United States.

Duing the campaign,

Duing the campaign, anti-Obama forces told us exaclty what Obama was. A socialist, marxist, muslim supporting, wealth redistributor. Some doubted and some just suspected but did not want to think that would really happen. After all, the main theme of the election was to punish Bush and the Republicans and replacing Bush with an inexperienced black guy from Chicago seemed like a fitting ironical punishment. Who cared who we put in there as long as it wasn't one of "them" wild spending Republicans. But now, after a little more than a year, Obama's actions and those of his fellow Democrats have overwhelmingly confirmed that everything the conservative opposition told us during the campaign has come true. We are no longer speculating or operating on mere suspicion. I am amazed at the number of Bush haters I have met who are now saying "OMG what have we done?" If the amount of damage being done wasn't so serious and so permanent and so expensive, it would be truly funny seeing the numb craniums start to tingle again with the realization that Obama really is a true believer socialist muslim. Obama downplays the muslim thing as mush as he can. But for sure Obama, Pelosi, and Reid should be the new poster children for Socialist Party of America. The demonstable guage of the awakening process over the last 12 months is the skyrocketing ratings of the FOX News network. The millions of new viewers are not people who all of a sudden came out of a coma and realized Obama was black. These are millions of people who have watched Obama and the Democrats closely for a year and made a decision that FOX News was the only news outlet that had him pegged from the start and reported exactly what we were in for under this socialist regime. And they are still the only network reporting the true cost of Obamacare (both financial and reduced access) , the true cost of Cap and Trade (double your utility and gasoline bills) , and the true cost of Obama's version of Immigration Reform (amnesty and free Obamacare).

This letter writer calls for

This letter writer calls for moderation but notice it's just one sided. He condemns the left for calling names - BUT - he doesn't chastise the right for the same thing.

In fact, the right dishes it out better than they take it. They get morally indignant when they're called a name. The Tea Party even gets offended when they're called a nickname!

Without a doubt Republicans have the bigger disinformation and fear mongering machine in politics. And you're naïve if you underestimate it's effectiveness. The Democrats have been slow to catch on. They need an apparatus just as unscrupulous. Need entertainment people that can rival or out do Fox News and talk radio. What else could be more fair and balanced?

gaspringwater, grouse, and

gaspringwater, grouse, and other assorted Marxists,

When a Republican or conservative stands on the floor of the Senate and falsely calls American Troops "Jack-booted thugs" as "turbin Durbin" of Illinois did then you can criticize their name calling.

When a Republican or conservative falsely accuses American Soldiers of terrorizing women and children as Kerry from Mass. did then you can criticize their name calling.

When a Republican or conservative falsely accuses American Soldiers of murder as did Rep. Murtha of Pa. then you can criticize their name calling.

Until then recognize that the democrat party is controlled by Marxists who want to change this country into a Marxist state. That is what Obama meant when he parroted" change you can believe in". The takeover of the health care industry was a major step in that goal.

orb - I'm not complaining what any Senator says on the legislative floor nor do I mind the extremist right hurling the accusations, Nazi, Socialist, Communist, or Marxist. I'm only pointing out that the Republican apparatus is better in the dirt game than their compatriot Democrats. A Republican character trait I guess. Nevertheless, the Demos need to get on the stick and catch up with the Republicans in the derogatory arts.
