Finance improvements for all people

  • Follow Letters

I don't live in Richmond County, but I work there. I use its roadways every day -- and they are in as bad of shape as I have ever seen.

Still I never hear or see anything said about this. I see news about the TEE center, which is really for one class of people. I see and hear about a baseball stadium, which is stupid, but nonetheless it is pursued -- by the mayor, of all people. He could take the dollars he wants to waste on this and spend them on repairing streets. They all need it, all over the city and county.

If I were the mayor, I would want to have decent streets and roadways for people to travel on to see my city, not for them to go away and to say that Augusta has a heck of a ballpark, but you need a monster truck to get to it. You ride down Broad Street, and it's an obstacle course just trying to miss holes and bumps that jar your bones.. The mayor is nutty wanting a ballpark, and the commissioners are, too, for voting for the TEE center.

The cure for this is to replace them all. And don't forget to replace the man who knows nothing but raising taxes -- City Administrator Fred Russell. Him first. Richmond County needs a crew that will look out for everyone, not just the upper class.

Have a good day, and stand up to Mayor Deke Copenhaver and his clown patrol. Get something done for all the people, not just the upper class.

Tony Powell

Bravo! and get the !@#$

Bravo! and get the !@#$ trains out of downtown and bring in more of the arts, like, you know, a home for opera, symphony, dance and independent film and support our museums, a place to park, first class restaurants, small parks and public spaces that are maintained like real cities, real public transit like an electric trolley from Evans, footbridges across the river from North Augusta... Then maybe we can talk about a stupid baseball stadium. Thugs are there only because we aren't. Breathing life into a city takes courage and leadership more than money.

We are governed by idiots.

We are governed by idiots. They can't fix the roads and bridges, they can't hire and fire employees without lawsuits for every personnel action, they can't manage contracting, they can't even provide trash service without robbing us for outrageous fees. And their best idea to fix garbage is to cut our service and give us dinky little metal cans with no wheels. But they think nothing of spending huge money on pie in the sky things like TEE Centers, "revitalization" projects, and baseball stadiums. They operate like typical Democrats. Let's obligate tons of taxpayer money and let the next guy worry about paying for it. Our commission, our city/county, and our charter are the laughing stock of Georgia because everyone knows that we are backwards, governed by ignorant people who are still living in the 60s, and paralyzed by our charter so that nothing will ever change. The only thing we can depend on from our local government is broken record Russel saying "let's raise property taxes, let's raise property taxes, let's raise property taxes".

I appreciate Mr. Powell's

I appreciate Mr. Powell's letter, I had been meaning to write a similar one. It's not just potholes and collapsing shoulders, etc., the painted lines on the roads are barely there anymore. It's hard enough trying to stay within the fading traffic lines on the roads in the daytime when you KNOW the roads. Can you imagine what it is like at night or for newcomers any time of day or night? The lines are so faded they are nearly invisible at night and in bad weather. How many accidents are occurring because of bad road conditions?
