Leaders must resolve school-cuts crisis

  • Follow Letters

The Board of Regents should close the University of Georgia's School of Veterinary Medicine, if the best they can produce in the past 30 years is Gov. Sonny Perdue. If the cut in University System students and faculty stands, there will not be another Republican governor in the next 30 years.

The leaders of Georgia have to think beyond the next budget year. The people they are affecting are the leaders of the next two generations, and each of those people has at least five voting friends. The brain drain is a monstrous miscalculation.

First they need to get MCG Hospital and Clinics back under the Medical College of Georgia fiscal umbrella. They alone could save the cuts planned for MCG's students and faculty in nursing and radiology at all levels. If not, then call a summit of all the regional hospitals for a five- or six-month externship for nurse anesthetists, etc.

Come on, now -- you guys sought leadership roles. Now lead . All you are doing is retreating in the face of minor adversity. Sonny, when you cull a herd, you don't kill all the calves. That is Veterinary Medicine 101.

Tom, Sonny is passing the

Tom, Sonny is passing the problem to the individual school leaders. Your ideas have merits. I'm with you...the school leaders are paid huge salaries to lead. It's time for them to earn their pay.

Tom, Tom, Tom..... the

Tom, Tom, Tom..... the problem is a lack of FUNDS and leadership. I see that you don't address the FACT that revenues have dropped making these cuts something that must happen.

You are a public school teacher right? So your views on cuts in education are a bit biased, but not without merit for that fact alone.

The fact is, we cannot afford free college education for everyone.

I have suggested that those who do not have the means to pay tuition increases should join the Army National Guard to EARN the education bennies they all need.

If you join the Georgia Army National Guard they will pay 100% of your tuition to a Georgia public college. All you need to do is pass Basic Comabt Traning (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT).

Gimmie gimmie gimmie!!!!

What happened to EARNING what you get?

Okay, here is the bottom line

Okay, here is the bottom line on schools whether you folks like it or not:
"What really makes a difference, what matters more than the class size or the textbook, the teaching method or the technology, or even the curriculum is the quality of the teacher." Well, imagine that?

Ok Brad, I agree with you to

Ok Brad, I agree with you to a certain extent. Revenue has dropped and it is time to tighten the belt like never before. However, you cannot keep providing services without some form of increase in fees or taxes. Everything in this country has gone up. The government will not address the issue that you make in your last statement " What happened to EARNING what you get? I am sick and tired of providing healthcare, money, and other services to illegal aliens and others that have NEVER paid a dime into our current system. You take away just the services that are provided to illegals, and this whole issue of any budget crisis is over. If the Georgia National Guard was flooded with 100,000 college students this fall seeking an education as you mentioned, where is this money and salaries going to come from? Social Services provide to non- qualifying individuals is the problem with the US in general. The State of Georgia and other states need to stop these services immediately. I think the general public is willing to pay taxes for a college student that might become a doctor or something else rather than an illegal alien who is going to send OUR money back to Mexico or some other country.

If the government would go

If the government would go broke trying to do health and education it would be wonderful. Health would improve and education would improve. Any organization or individual doing more than they are capable of doing should fail and then we learn what to do and how to do it. It is all math and easy to figure out.
