Grant will help drug court, save lives

  • Follow Letters

It is with pleasure that I write to you concerning an important effort in the courts in the support shown by the Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area.

The Augusta Judicial Circuit Drug Court was fortunate to be selected as a recipient of a grant awarded from the foundation to augment our court. The lives that will be positively affected by these funds can be measured best by the success stories of families reunited, productive lives regained and the circle of addiction broken.

Our sincere appreciation is extended to the Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area for taking an interest in Augusta and assisting those in need.

Judge James G. Blanchard Jr.

Evans

(The writer is a superior court judge for the Augusta Judicial Circuit.)

I sure didn't know our legal

I sure didn't know our legal system was financed by private corporations that are themselves partly funded by taxes. I am just curious as to what was bought and how much was provided? And I always thought courts were established solely to dispense justice and the rule of law. Interesting, but not surprising.

Oh great. More money to go to

Oh great. More money to go to enabling and making excuses for drug users. Fact: rehabilitation of drug users and criminals don't work. We've got about 50 years of progressive judicial system reform to prove that. Lock them up for 5 years first time. If they do it again make it 10 years. That, my friends, is called an incentive not to do drugs or commit crimes. Take all of the money spent on rehab, free needles, counseling, probation supervision, etc. and build bigger jails. A lot of noise is made about the cost of incarceration but I think that the cost to society of turning these addicts and thugs loose on the streets to commit more crimes and mock the sytem is much higher than the cost of incarceration. We just encourage those on the fence to go ahead and do wrong because there is no fear of being punished. I remember the day when the choice about doing drugs or committing a crime was very easy to make because I knew that if I did I would be locked up for a significant amount of time. Too bad that we let political correctness put an end to that easy to make decision. No fear of doing the time = No fear of doing the crime. Another progressive policy that has caused a fatal self-inflicted wound to several generations.

Disssman, receiving private

Disssman, receiving private funds won't make any difference if a judge already shows favoritism. I hope this court will be conducted in a more efficient manner than the domestic and criminal courts are. I sincerely doubt it and am being very nice knowing what I know about how certain individuals conduct their courts. Being unbiased and conducting court in a respectable manner is an important trait for a judge to have.
