Cartoon was insensitive to unemployed

  • Follow Letters

I take great exception to the very caustic cartoon on the March 7 Opinions page.

Having two bums depicting the thousands of clean-cut Americans who are out of work is an insult to them. None of the unemployed I know are bums. What a slap in the face to all the Chronicle readers who are unemployed. Does he have some hidden message?

Mr. McKee could have depicted two clean-cut individuals standing in a line at the unemployment office and get across a stronger, clearer and more complimentary message about the unemployed.

Shame, shame.

I think an apology is in order.

Charles J. Scavullo Sr.

Augusta

Wow, I think you read way

Wow, I think you read way more into that cartoon than I did. I didn't see them as two bums at all. I saw them as 2 sad, unemployed individuals. The "bum" thought never even entered my mind. Funny how different people look at things different ways.

Mr. Scavullo, with all due

Mr. Scavullo, with all due respect, methinks thou doth protest too much sir. This was a cartoon. Nothing more, and nothing less. No apology should be asked for or given, imho. That is life, and if one searches hard enough, they will find something that offends them. Learn tolerance sir, and you will save yourself a lot of internal anguish.

You, Mr. Scavullo have

You, Mr. Scavullo have offended me by allowing yourself to condemn a cartoon that I happen to have liked. See, we all can be offended by something. The only way you aren't going to offend anyone is to keep your mouth shut. But if we were forced to do that then we would be closer to Obama's utopia than the US Constitution.

Strange, when I saw the

Strange, when I saw the cartoon, I saw two down and out unemployed Americans, looking for work who could not afford to go see the latest movies….the cartoon was a “dig” at the “HYPE” over The Oscar Awards. Different strokes for different folks!!

The cartoon was published on

The cartoon was published on an opinion page. Disagree with the cartoon, but don't be offended.
Caustic, biting humor is McKee's style and it is consistent with the AC editorial staff - but, it is just their opinions.

He needed to depict them as

He needed to depict them as unemployed somehow. Having them stand in front of an unemployment office with three-piece suits on would not have worked because there are no televisions at the unemployment office. The television and the average American reaction to what was on it was the focus of the cartoon.
