Health-care debacle is embarrassment

  • Follow Letters

Against my better judgment, I watched a few minutes of the president's daylong infomercial on "bipartisan" health-care legislation, and some highlights thereafter. Common sense aside, let's look at facts.

The Constitution gives the federal government no authority over health care. Democrats have a majority in both houses of Congress.

Since President Obama became president, and the Democrats added to their numbers, the Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia lost to a Republican. The incumbent Democratic governor of New Jersey was given the heave-ho and replaced by a Republican. A Republican was elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts. The Obama Socialist Express is being repudiated at the polls.

Sen. Evan Bayh is quitting because he said the partisanship is too much for him to handle. Right. He knows that he will be defeated at the polls with his pals from Massachusetts, New Jersey and Virginia. Sen. Chris Dodd is bailing as well.

A Democrat from the House switched his party affiliation to Republican. Yes, Sen. Arlen Specter switched his affiliation to Democrat -- and they can have him (Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, too). In November, we'll see how it works for ol' Arlen.

Obama still is blaming Republicans for his party's rejection of his agenda. There are more than enough Democrats in both houses to pass whatever they please. But they can't and/or won't. So they orchestrate this phony health-care infomercial to chide Republicans. When Obama was at Columbia and Yale, did he learn about integers -- greater than, less than, that stuff? He has the numbers. Every time he blames George W. Bush and congressional Republicans, he is admitting another failure.

I commend those in the Democratic Party for rejecting the unconstitutional blitzkrieg of the administration's warped agenda. If you want to get the uninsured insured, why not address that with two or three pages? But no! They offer 1,100-plus pages of the federal takeover sequence. This is becoming an embarrassment. Obama should stop.

That's for sure Mr. Benedict.

That's for sure Mr. Benedict. There is no one party to blame for where America is at today. Republicans and democrats alike have spent years caring more about their own greed than the people's business and desires. The American people would love to have lower costs and make sure that health insurance doesn't bankrupt you but most of Americans did not want this solution: Government take over! Now, Obama is like an addict that will stop at nothing to get his fix...Obama's fix is having some piece and any piece of legislation that makes it appear that he has accomplished something and is worthy of his nobel peace prize. Obama does not care that he is messing with 1/6 th of our economy or maybe he does because within it is the control that he seeks. November cannot come quick enough to vote these guys out!

I disagree with some of the

I disagree with some of the "facts" you used, particularly the straight cause and effect that is implied. That is a minor part of the letter, though. The real point is well made and overall I agree. We need something but this legislation has now become such a divisive issue that I don't see how it can work.

Now we just need those elected to wake up and see that we need/want something to change, not just get tweaked. It is to the point that, without a company providing group coverage, only the wealthy can afford health insurance.

I've seen what bad health care looks like. Their good is our mediocre, at best. The recipients walk around without legs or arms because they got hurt. In the States those same wounds would have been treated and healed; limbs would have been saved. If we don't stop the runaway costs, though, we will soon be in the same boat. We already have bureaucratic administrators with no medical training sitting at their desks deciding that progressive therapy is needed before a certain medication or medical procedure can be authorized. Never mind the fact that this same progressive therapy has been tried twice before. It's now, they weren't in place then, and it needs to be done again.

This transcends party lines.

The press, of course, is

The press, of course, is still carring water for the Democrates! Sen Bunting called out Obama on his fiscal responsibility agenda where Obama implimented Pay Go..Well there is no money for the pork infected jobs/unemployment compensation and no money for the health care refrom bill. Obama is taking 500 billion from medicare counting as part of medicare then switching it to his health care bill, Obama is running 10 years of health care and paying for it with fourteen years on revenue, all the while creating another budget busting intitlement..what part of broke don't the Democrates understand?

The only embarrassment here

The only embarrassment here is this rambling, nearly incoherent letter. It was only weeks ago that the right was screaming about "transparency" and the talks being televised (as if we had anything of the sort under Bush/Cheney). People still want health care reform even if they are not happy with this current bill.

I don't believe Evan Bayh

I don't believe Evan Bayh resigned because of reelection fears. Polls showed him comfortably ahead. I had the opportunity to meet Sen Bayh Tuesday in Washington. I can tell you this. If we had about 100 people like him in the Senate, we would be in pretty good shape.

Good old Justus. We can always count on him for a recitation of the facts as they never were.

Just think; if we'd never had the Great Society enactments by LYNDON JOHNSON (I can get you a quarter for a clue, J4.), we probably would be chugging along nicely today, ALL of us.

justthefacts - You are

justthefacts - You are normally very reliable on facts. Consider this blog by Michael Barone -

"He also expressed confidence that he could win another term. On that the polling evidence is mixed. Recent DailyKos polls showed him leading former Congressman John Hostettler 53%-37% and former Congressman and Senator Dan Coats 55%-35%. But Rasmussen polls conducted late last month, right after the January 19 special Senate election in Massachusetts, showed Bayh trailing Congressman Mike Pence 47%-44% and leading Hostettler by only 45%-41%. Pence later said he would not run for the Senate but would run for reelection in the House. But the important point about the Rasmussen poll, as I commented when it came out, is that Bayh was running under 50% in a state where he has previously shown great electoral strength. Rasmussen did not test Bayh against Coats, who announced his candidacy in early February. Bayh expressed confidence that he could win. What these numbers tell me is that he could have won—but that he could also easily have lost."

justice4, I agree Evan Bayh didn’t resign because of reelection fears. He resigned because of a weak stomach. He could not stomach any more of the corrupt back room deals Pelosi, Reed and Obama were pulling.

Carlos, OK, I see your pt.

Carlos, OK, I see your pt. Still, I would hope that the fine people in IN. would have returned Bayh to Washington. I guess we will never know. Bayh told me, that as Gov., he could make executive decisions and actually get things done. Now, well we all know the gridlock. He was so much the opposite of Ben Nelson and Hoyer, who were condescending and arrogant.

Health care has already

Health care has already passed folks in both the House & Senate. This next step is to iron out some differences and then use the reconciliation process (like the GOP did many times under Bush/Cheney) to get those outstanding differences through so that the President can sign the bill. You can moan, be afraid, lose sleep, and otherwise just be a whining and complaining loser, but remember that in the end health care reform is the right thing to do. Just like cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans so they could rip us off from Wall Street was the right thing to do. Hey if you don't like the atmosphere then "Go Shopping". But I know, most Republicans are overextended and now don't have any money. And if Woods goes to the Masters this year, we had all better watch our dear Southern daughters!

Lee this is a good letter. I

Lee this is a good letter. I saw on the news yesterday that a Democrat will introduce a bill that will change the Constitution where it will require health insurance for everyone as a right of the people and that the government will provide it. The government cannot run and keep control of anything, look at the postal service which announced it will lose 7-8 billion dollars this year. Since Obama said his health care plan will bring the cost of health insurance down, consider the government run postal service, has the cost of a postage stamp ever gone down, no?

It's all over but the cryin'

It's all over but the cryin' folks. Bend over, pull out your wallet and pray that you don't get sick if you are "too old" or "too young" to fit the "priority curve" once the government officially takes over your medical care. While you're at it, pray that the doctors want to stay and work for the government.

The American people will remember this in November. I only hope it will not be too late to reverse it.

Terp, congrats on your BB win. If making this HC bill "law" was so easy, why didn't the Democrats have it done in Jan or Feb.? You keep blaming the Republicans. They didn't stop it, the Democrats did. Yes, everyone agrees we need HC reform. The devil is in the details. Hense, the anguish you call whining. And lastly, the voters will Go Shopping in November.

Some cultures like being

Some cultures like being tricked and actually feel more secure when they're owned by a more powerful entity. They cover their need to be nannied 24/7 by referring to the defensive measures of others that don't like being owned as fear. Well, in a way and from their perspective, the fear of being owned can be used to describe those that prefer not losing their liberty. Notreally, what do you call the fear of not being controlled at every turn? Democratic? Even though my avatar was proven to be in the public domain, the racist AC has chosen to ban it from use. Well, this IS a privately owned forum.

I, too, watched the horrible

I, too, watched the horrible game last night. Being a Duke fan I was surprised to see the Terps make the supreme effort and hold on to win against one of the best teams in the nation. Vasquez is great. March madness is a disease I look forward to every year. When the "big dance" draws near, the Blue Devils will be in the hunt. I expect to see them play Kansas for the crown. Syracuse and Texas will vie for #3.

A stack of one trillion $1

A stack of one trillion $1 bills would reach more than a quarter of the way to the moon.

One trillion dollars divided by 300 million Americans comes out to $3,333 per person.

A trillion dollar bills laid end to end would reach the sun.

To reach a trillion you must spend a dollar per second for 32,000 years.

A million dollars a day for 2,000 years is only three-quarters of a trillion dollars.

A million seconds is about 11½ days. A billion seconds is about 32 years, and a trillion seconds is 32,000 years.

How ironic to read posters

How ironic to read posters mocking objections to this Democratic attention to healthcare and reciting the tired "fear monger" tag to Republicans. I say ironic because what is truly important to the US today is keeping Iran, the most dangerous, terrorist country in the world, from obtaining nuclear weapons. Yesterday the president of Brazil, with our Sec of State standing next to him, said that Iran should be permitted to seek nuclear power "for peaceful means." No rational person thinks Iran seeks nuclear power for anything but vaporizing Israel and establishing a world without the US. Why? Because the Iranian president has said so many times in public! And our President has made his 35th speech on healthcare! Can any sane American defend that?
