Illegals create unfair playing field

  • Follow Letters

As a local builder and economics major, I've got to ask: Where is the outrage?

Each day more and more local, legal, taxpaying subcontractors are being forced out of work and replaced with illegal, nontaxpaying, and non-English-speaking workers. While some builders are able to build very cheap houses in a short amount of time, don't they realize that property values and appraisals are going backward with an over supply of houses on the market. Subdivisions that once boasted new homes in the $300,000 range now have new homes being marketed in the low 200s.

Columbia County must not realize that lower property values result in a lower tax base. Local, state and federal governments are losing revenue because legal citizens are unemployed. To pour gas on the fire, a tremendous amount of the money being paid to these illegal workers is being sent out of the United States back home to their families in their native countries.

Some will argue that they are only using illegals to stay competitive. I say bring on the competition! Let's just demand that someone make sure everyone is playing on the same field by the same rules. We have to be legal to do business, and so should they!

With all of the political

With all of the political b.s. promoted during the Bush years, the one true major mistake made by his administration was the support of the Mexican invasion. The millions of illegals has damaged the balance of the economy, robbed the coffers through social services and allowed hard socialists to gain a larger foothold through the illegal vote. There is a cure, besides the expensive deportation concept. The Fair Tax Plan as written by John Linder. Not the modified b.s. promoted by radical leftists, but the actual law that supports a consumption tax that cover all social "benefits". The cure, only actual American citizens (not appointed citizens) can reap the benefits, and ALL consumers pay taxes. The tax cheats cease to exist and EVERYONE pays their fair share....no more government manipulation. When we've had enough of the "illegal alien" problem, the cure is available.

It sounds to me like Mr Economics needs to rethink his bidding process. The construction industry will go on just fine without you. Enjoy your righteous indignation all the way through Chapter-11.

Welcome to the world of

Welcome to the world of capitalism. Capitalism is a great system. But as Marx and Engels pointed out, the major flaw of capitalism is overproduction. As you admitted in your letter, “ property values and appraisals are going backward with an over supply of houses on the market.” Who caused this oversupply of houses? Answer: builders like you. Therefore, why drag the “illegals” into your argument???

This is a problem on two

This is a problem on two fronts, Illegals are often taken advantage of and American workers can't get jobs! I know a framer is south Georgia whose crops (grapes) get regularly stolen and their is unemployment among American workers because the other farmers hire illegals and don't pay taxes on them and pay a reduced wage. There are problems with prostitution, drugs and theft from many of the migrants!

charliemanson, Marx didn't

charliemanson, Marx didn't know competition existed then as it does now. Overproduction has nothing to do with capitalism, that's just poor management that is straightened out in the marketplace.

I hear the Columbia County

I hear the Columbia County Sheriff's Office told it's contractors for the new addition to make sure no illegal aliens (undocumented workers (jeez)) are hired for the project because they won't be allowed to work.

The solution to the problem

The solution to the problem is to enforce the law. If you see illegals being hired, then report them to local authorities and ICE. When the money pot runs out, the illegals will leave on their own.

It's pretty hard for the typical American (both Euro and Afro-centric) construction-worker-wannabe to compete for basic trade and maintenance opportunities when faced with competition from cheerful, energetic, resourceful, and dependable Hispanics who, in spite of language barriers, make it to the job site early, manage to provide their own transportation (even if they've had to WALK), scramble to complete distasteful tasks without complaint, don't expect you to haul them to and provide a three-piece chicken dinner at 11:00AM, don't spend fifteen minutes of every sixty bumming and smoking cigarettes, don't anguish over whether the other guy with the shovel is making ten cents more or is moving too much dirt, and don't start picking up tools and cords at 3:20PM. After ten hour workdays in the heat of summer, these guys routinely rush to a second job somewhere at 6PM to put in another three hours until dark. And, yes, let's criticize them for sending wages EARNED home to support extended families - bunch of thieves, laggards, and trouble-makers destroying the American way of life...

FD Do you think maybe they work like that because they didn't have all the freebies in their country like we give away here...Seems to me if we stop some freebies & actually make folks work for their food we could see the am. workers doing the same as the others in your post.

charlismanson ask, “Who caused this oversupply of houses”? The government was the biggest contributor with Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac. People like Barney Frank in congress forced the banks to lend money to people who could not pay it back.

SeenitB4, I'm not convinced

SeenitB4, I'm not convinced that the prospect of obtaining freebies to which you refer is the motivational factor involved. Resourceful people of any stripe recognize opportunities which develop, and rush to fill those needs. Certainly if freebies were made subject to enforced restrictions and definite time limits, resourcefulness would be affected positively, as you suggest. As it is now, if abused programs are legal and widespread, it's hard to blame people for taking advantage of what they offer. On another level, bankruptcy used to have negative connotations when folks failed to pay their debts. Today it's defined as 'restructuring' those debts you intend to avoid, and considered savvy business practice.

The Bird Feeder. I bought a

The Bird Feeder.
I bought a bird feeder.. I hung
it on my patio and filled
it lovingly with seed... It was indeed a beautiful bird feeder.
Within a
week we had hundreds of birds
taking advantage of the
continuous flow of free and
easily accessible food.

But then the birds started
building nests in the boards
of the patio, above the table,
and next to the barbecue..

Then came the bird poop. It was
everywhere; on the patio tiles,
the chairs, the table ....
everywhere!

Then some of the birds
turned mean. They would
dive bomb me and try to
peck me even though I had
fed them out of my own
pocket.

And other birds were
boisterous and loud. They
sat on the feeder and
squawked and screamed at
all hours of the day and night
and demanded that I fill it
when it got low on food.

After a while, I couldn't even
sit on my own back porch
anymore. So I took down the
bird feeder and in three days
the birds were gone. I cleaned
up their mess and took down
the many nests they had built
all over the patio..

Soon, the back yard was like
it used to be ... quiet, serene
and no one demanding their
rights to a free meal....

Now let's see .......
Our government gives out
free food, subsidized housing,
free medical care, and free
education and allows anyone
born here to be an automatic
citizen.

Then the illegals came by
the millions. Suddenly
our taxes went up to pay for the
free services; small apartments
are housing 3 or more families; you
have to wait 6 hours to be seen
by a doctor in an emergency room
because it is filled with illegal non tax payers;
your child's 8th grade class is
behind other schools because
over half the class doesn't speak
English.

Corn Flakes now come in a
bilingual box; I have to
'press one' to hear my bank
talk to me in English, and
people waving flags other
than Stars and Bars are
squawking and screaming
in the streets, demanding
more rights and free liberties.

Its just my opinion but:
maybe, just maybe,
it's time for the government
to take down the damn bird feeder.

chascush, The government

chascush, The government wanted Freddie and Fannie to help make loans available to honest people who could pay it back. The government did not tell them to lie on people's loan applications, lie to the people getting the loan about how they really worked, or to start the variable interest rates, etc. Nor did the government tell all the businesses to put all their eggs in one basket by gambling on these loans. It could just be the housing market hurt, but all those businesses that used them as investments really hurt the economy. It also did not help that the government was not keeping an eye to ensure things were not regulated properly in that regard, but as much as some people think Democrats are evil communists, they like Republicans have big businesses interests at heart more than the average people.

I, too, am in the construction business. I have attempted to contact ICE...after being placed on hold for over 45 mins on four separate occasions I gave up. Local law officers will tell you there are thousands of illegal Hispanics in the CSRA that do not have drivers licenses or insurance. However, they are not held when they are stopped due to overcrowding in the jails. Ask around....our schools are overcrowded, our hospitals are overcrowded (especially the emergency rooms), and the list goes on and on. Our property values are falling and our unemployment continues to rise. WAKE UP AMERICA!! Our country is at war and yet the local newspaper front page on Sat. was 3/4 about a professional golfer that is an admitted adulterer. WAKE UP AMERICA!!

Good message, to those that think hiring illegals, it is no different than using stolen materials to undercut honest competitors. It just wrong either way.
