Political chicanery falls through cracks

  • Follow Letters

Besides all the snow that "global warming" brought about this winter, here's a few more tidbits to add to the excellent letter by Jason Clay Pope in the Jan. 27 Chronicle ("Obama terror policies doomed to fail").

While there are insufficient funds to give taxpayers a cost-of-living raise for 2010 and 2011, congressional members Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank, etc., tacitly approved for themselves an average $5,000 raise for each year. Isn't that against the 28th Amendment to the Constitution -- or, like the rules in their health-care proposals, it doesn't apply to them?

And here's another dirty little secret that recently sneaked out: With all the reluctance to drill for oil for Americans, Obama recently signed the approval for financing new oil drilling in Brazil, with the clear understanding that all the oil would go to China.

But I was truly saddened by a recent e-mailed photo showing our president with hands unpatriotically clasped together in front of him, while dignitaries around him are saluting the flag. How can we believe anything he said in his State of the Union talk?

Mr. Rodgers, you neglected to

Mr. Rodgers, you neglected to mention that the President's lapel pin was on crooked. Otherwise, I find your letter completely superficial.

http://www.factcheck.org/2010/01/retribution-fabrication/. Congress can't vote to give sitting members a pay raise. In 1989 they did pass an amendment that gave automatic pay raises yearly unless they are voted against.

Lawmakers' salary package

Lawmakers' salary package doesn't include raise for 2010
Senators decide, however, to retain their automatic cost-of-living raises for future years in spite of call by Senate majority leader and others to do away with them.
March 11, 2009|Associated PressWASHINGTON — Lawmakers on Tuesday denied themselves a pay raise next January but, with an eye toward a better economic and political climate, decided to retain their automatic cost-of-living raises for future years.

A blur of last-minute procedural maneuvering in the Senate produced a salary package for members of Congress that holds their annual pay at $174,000 until 2011. Earlier in the day, on a 52-45 vote, senators rejected a more politically painful proposal that would have forced lawmakers to stand up and be counted when they want to boost their salaries.

Oooh! An emailed photo! Really!!! Did you respond to the letters from Mr. john dickinson, Dr. Joseph Williams, and Mother Sereena asking for your help in transferring funds out of (pick a country) to prevent them from falling into the hands of unscrupulous and corrupt politicians? I'll bet you did.

I enjoyed your letter, Jimmy

I enjoyed your letter, Jimmy and the comments above. Your points are well taken. I wondered how accurate your points were after you revealed your belief in the urban legend you sited from an email. I am surprised Augusta Chronicle printed a letter with this misrepresentation. I am not an Obama supporter but I cannot countenance misinformation. Just the facts Max.

The social security cost of

The social security cost of living adjustment is based on a formula that was passed by Congress in 1974 (+/- a year). It has nothing to do with President Obama. It was actually bi-partisan, passed by a Democratic House, and signed by a Republican President, back when those things could happen. When you blame everything on Obama, you lose your credibility.
