Editorial didn't tell the whole story

  • Follow Letters

In your editorial "A good-faith attempt to help" (Jan. 8), you only printed the latter part of Brit Hume's comment concerning Tiger Woods. Mr. Hume also stated that Mr. Woods should renounce his Buddhist religion and embrace Christianity, which Mr. Hume felt was the superior faith.

This sanctimoniousness was why Keith Olbermann and other commentators compared Mr. Hume's beliefs to those of a jihadist. It was a comparison of the nature of the beliefs, not the actions. It was not an attack on Christianity as you chose to present it.

Mr. Hume stated that Woods' conversion would be "a great example." Here Hume erred again. Tiger Woods already is a great example in two ways. First, he is an example of what practice and dedication to one's profession or art can accomplish. Next, Woods is a great example of what unchecked hubris and libido can do.

Regarding the moral superiority of Christianity, study the history of that religion. It's a very checkered one. From a religion of being the persecuted, it became a religion of the persecutors, including crusades, inquisitions and sectarian wars. Millions have been murdered in the name of Christ!

I also wonder how many of the Christians reading this have ever considered the depth of the story of Christ's healing the centurion's servant? That centurion was an enemy invader, a believer in an alien religion. Christ did not refuse the centurion, nor ask him to renounce his Pagan faith. Christ simply healed the servant.

The only universal command we need to follow is to treat each other with compassion and respect, regardless of our races, genders or personal spiritual paths.

Joseph A. Zuchowski

Mr Hume is an opinion

Mr Hume is an opinion journalist who was giving his personal option in an opinion slot in the show. ACES gave their opinion. What is the problem Mr Zuchowski? You just got a chance to share your opinion. I think your opinion is hollow and shows the resentment felt by many of the unsaved who still have serious doubts about eternity. There, we have all shared, do you feel better now?

Joseph A. Zuchowsk :Christ

Joseph A. Zuchowsk :Christ also complimented the Centurion on his faith IN HIM and GOD, many Romans had become Jews as had St Paul's fanily and Paul..So the Centurion may not have been a Pagan as you suggest..Christ's command to us was to go into all the World and share the good news (Gospel) that God and man at table have sat down and we have reached the age of Immanuel (God is with us) through Christ's atonement on the cross..

Good points about the

Good points about the centurion and his faith, Carcraft. He loved the nation of Israel and had helped build a synagogue (Matthew 7:5). He acknowledged Jesus' authority to heal simply by speaking from a distance (Matthew 7:8), and Jesus replied, "Not even in Israel have I found such faith" (Matthew 7:9). Mr. Zuchowski closes, "The only universal command we need to follow is to treat each other with compassion and respect, regardless of our races, genders or personal spiritual paths." Interestingly, he overlooks the command to love God with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength.

For what has to be a first, I

For what has to be a first, I agree with a second letter printed in The Chronicle. Dixieman, you're showing ignorance of the ACLU. They have gone to bat for many religious organizations.

Yes, many have been killed in

Yes, many have been killed in the name of Christ. That was the work of Man, not God. One day...Every (yes, EVERY) knee shall bow, and every (EVERY) toungue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. This is the word of God. Amen!

If Hume's concern for Tiger's

If Hume's concern for Tiger's spiritual life was genuine, he should have dipensed his advice privately. To pontificate to an international audience is the Pope's job. I might attend Mass and still disagree with even the real Pope on several issues both political and social, but that's between me and God and the Pope, not everybody and his sister-in-law. My interest in Tiger Woods is the breathtaking skill he brings with him to every great golf course on earth.

Giving an opinion is still

Giving an opinion is still allowed in American journalism. Taking issue with an opinion also still is allowed. Polite discourse, respect and courtesy, even intelligence, appear to have become optional and rare. Kindly move on. But if Tiger Woods is a Buddhist, then so is my cat.

The "whole story" is that it

The "whole story" is that it is just Mr. Hume's opinion....nothing more or nothing less. All religions share their beliefs. That is how they proliferate.
