Under Obama, what's in a name?

  • Follow Letters

Maybe it's just me, but I woke up so happy this morning realizing that the war on terror is over now that we have the "overseas contingency operation," and now we no longer have to fear acts of terror.

If someone blows up Savannah River Site or Plant Vogtle, the smell of death and disaster will not be nearly so unpleasant knowing that it was caused not by terrorism but by a "man-made disaster." By the way, can we go ahead and change that to "person-made disasters" so as not to offend any political insensitivities?

I have eliminated my mortgage payment and my income taxes; they are now to be referred to as my "monthly financial institution contribution" and my "annual patriotic monetary contribution." respectively. While I'm at it, we could change the name of abortion to " inconvenient life resolution," and racists to "American pigmentation differentiation societies."

Thank you, Mr. Obama, for giving us this wonderful change. Gosh, I feel so much better. Now if I could just come up with a new name for in-laws.

Bill Goss

Of course this writer is
Unpublished

Of course this writer is being facetious, while completely missing the point. (must be a southern thing) The "war on terror" was a Hollywood-juvenile attempt to express a military operation, however the new president knows that this operation can only succeed with limited military personnel. Thus, an intelligent approach to a complex set of foreign problems dealing with years of disputes, which is correctly designated as "contingency Opns" and will produce a more acceptable result. The writer's list of attempts-to-sound-smart phrases are folly, but if his position is that words don't count, well, why doesn't the history books refer to the KKK as a terrorist organization? Their acts of out- right murder, public lynchings, rape & arson warranted such a designation, but because of "historical truth avoidance syndrome" in some quarters, their acts are worthy of praise. Go figure.

Well, since we realized a long time ago that the term "fiscal conservative" meant "big-spending debt-accumulator" we realized that all definitions had been turned on their heads by the big-government folks helping special interests, like SRS contractors, pick our pockets.

Much to the military's

Much to the military's relief, Obama is giving them clear objectives on defeating AQ. Obama is developing a clear end-game and giving the Generals more troops in Afghanistan. Saying there is a "war on terrorism" is about as vague and helpful as saying there is a "war on drugs". In both cases, I say duh. Asking the military to fight a war on terrorism helps them in absolutely no way. What they do need is clear objectives. Luckly, we now have an administration that is giving them that.

HELLO! HELLO! The Republicans

HELLO! HELLO! The Republicans are in a state of confusion and in-house fighting. I don't think Steele and Duke can con-exist in the same party, but nice try. McCain's ideas will be even older in 2012. Poor ellie mae Palin has had her day in the sun. If the economy looks better in 4 years, why change horses. We have a real TIGER WOODS in the white house who is on the job 24/7. Bush was asleep riding shotgun. The republicans will have to come up with more fear tactics that only work with a few, "take our guns, etc." There haven't even been a mention of guns, so people are not buying that. Perhaps Hannity ( a joke) will bring up jeremiah wright (who cares) again. Poor poor FOX. Well, this should give you enough to think on for a while. We're in the driver seat now and you need to just follow the convoy. 10-4 big buddy. HELLO! HELLO!

The same names that we have

The same names that we have had for everything since 1776 is in a name under Obama. Imagine what would have happened if McCain was elected -- anyone who is not a white male would be second-class citizens, our nation would rank as one of the worst in the world when it comes to women's rights, we would have no allies across the world, this nation would look just like an Islamic extremist nation.

Posted by bdittle on Mon Mar 30, 2009 8:51 AM....Shallow thinkers like you, motormoty and your ilk, are why this countryu is going to the dogs fast. The war on terror was not strictly a military operation, but included our intelligence gatherers, law enforcement (FBI) and State Dept (to coordinate with our allies) to fight terrorism here. NOw that we don't have a war on terror but only military contingencies over seas, I wonder how long it will take for al Queda to hit here again. Not long, I'm afraid.

What a delightful LTE! You

What a delightful LTE! You made me laugh for a good while. What a gift to be able to get your point across in such biting sarcasm! Semantics is just a game - a word game. It's just like changing the ribbons on an ugly horse. The ribbons change, but the horse is still ugly. I agree with devilishlymad67, the KKK was a terrorist group, but so are the Black Panthers, the Malcom X group, and those who foolishly follow Willie Ayers. Terrorism, in the term we now use, really started for us in the 1960s with the different plane hijackings and such. Terrorism has just escalated and become more sophisticated. It's still terrorism.
