Editorial: Bottom line

If you think last week’s acquittal of the illegal immigrant in the 2015 killing of Kate Steinle was a proper legal verdict – and we don’t think it is – it was still an abomination.

Even if seven-time felon, five-time deportee Jose Ines Garcia Zarate shot the 32-year-old Steinle accidentally with a stolen gun while she was merely strolling a San Francisco pier with her father, how is that not at least involuntary manslaughter?

The verdict is an outrage heaped on a tragedy.

It’s also the worst in a continuing series of purposeful and profane insults to the American people by the leaders of so-called “sanctuary cities” – which offer a safe haven for criminal illegal aliens, but none for all-American gals like Kate Steinle.

The courts have blunted efforts to punish such cities by withholding federal funds, but a new bill filed Monday would provide massive fines and even prison time for elected officials who protect criminal illegals from lawful deportation.

It should be a no-brainer, but won’t be. Legal Americans continue to be thrown under the bus.
