An early score for SRP Park

Clemson-Georgia game an auspicious start for new ballpark

SRP Park is only taking shape on North Augusta’s riverfront, but there’s already been a home run recorded.

Officials announced this week that the new stadium’s first event next April will be a baseball game between regional universities Clemson and Georgia.

The game, set for April 10 – two days before the host Augusta GreenJackets christen their new stadium – is a special treat for many reasons.

Maybe the best one is that it will afford area alumni of both schools the opportunity to travel just a few minutes to see their alma maters in action. And, of course, it’s big-time college sport action.

In addition, it will be truly historic: the inaugural event, the first pitch as it were, for a stadium whose impending cultural, psychological and economic impact on this area is difficult to fathom, much less calculate. The ballpark is only the anchor of a sweeping development that will include hotel and convention space, offices, restaurants and more.

And as evidenced by the Clemson-Georgia game, SRP Park will host much more than GreenJackets games, though it will be a special treat just to see those in a sparkling new venue – built by the same company, Brasfield and Gorrie, that just finished SunTrust Park, the new home of the Atlanta Braves.

But let the record reflect that the first home run came when the Clemson-Georgia game was brought here.
