The era of cynicism

We could go on about administration's lies - but what is the effect?

  • Follow Editorials

Lying leaders have always been with us. But it’s doubtful this country has ever seen the brazenness of the Obama administration.

We want to caution young Americans, especially, who haven’t known anything else: The level of lying that is going on today in Washington – and the lack of accountability for it – is neither normal nor acceptable nor inevitable.

Nor does it bode well for this country.

It’s not just the repetitiveness or the nakedness of it that makes this administration’s lying so dangerous to the body politic. It’s also the premeditated nature of it.

Past politicians have lied too, but usually to get out of trouble. Richard Nixon was trying to save his skin and cover up unforgivable misdeeds. Ditto Bill Clinton. Same with congressmen and mayors and other pols who lie to protect their peccadilloes.

In other instances, politicians lie to get elected, because we often don’t want to hear the truth.

This administration does all that, certainly. This president lied about us being able to keep our health care. That tall tale was named whopper of the year by the left-leaning Washington Post. He lied about having health-care debates on CSPAN; about allowing Americans to read bills online before they’re passed; about not issuing signing statements like past presidents; about fixing the Veterans Affairs problem; about consulting with Congress on prisoner releases and more.

But some of the lying in this administration is just strategic – purposeful, premeditated and goal-oriented.

Why fabricate a fairy tale about what happened in Benghazi? Why go on the Sunday talk shows and claim that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl served with “honor and distinction” – when the administration knew darned well he had absconded from his unit into the arms of the Taliban? That, in effect, is trying to create a false mythology around the case.

With regard to the attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya, the administration blatantly lied about an Internet video causing it – when, in truth, it was a planned and well-armed al-Qaida-style assault.

When you lie this much, you’re suspect even when you might be telling the truth. So, when the administration magically claimed 8 million Obamacare enrollees earlier this year, it’s possible many Americans just didn’t believe it. How sad.

We could go on about the lies, but they are well-documented. The question is, what is the effect of all that lying?

We fear that this administration is creating an unprecedented climate of cynicism about our government. Let us repeat: We believe it could bring on an unprecedented level of cynicism in this nation.

The media are blamed for a lot of things, but merely passing along these lies, or passing judgment on them, shouldn’t be one of them. No reporters forced anyone in this administration to fake anything.

Indeed, if anything, the news media are under-reporting the administration’s problems.

“There’s a tendency in the news media, on the part of some managers, to censor or block stories that don’t fall in line with the message they want sent to the viewers,” former CBS reporter Sharyl Attkisson says – diplomatically leaving out that the censoring she encountered was largely to protect the Obama administration.

Americans have always joked about and derided leaders they disagree with. That’s nothing new. But that’s a completely different thing from an acceptance, and even an expectation, that the government will lie to us – chronically, and about the most important things.

The worst part is the lack of accountability. This, more than the lying, leads to toxic cynicism. When you see all this lying, and it goes unpunished and the liars toil on with impunity, it imbues one with a sense of bitterness and hopelessness reminiscent of communist- and dictator-run nations.

President Nixon was forced from office. George H.W. Bush lost re-election in part because he broke his “no new taxes” pledge. But so far, little has happened – other than declining popularity – as a result of the cascade of bald-faced lies roiling out of this White House.

The only thing that has happened is a continued erosion in this administration’s credibility and Americans’ ability to believe anything it says. That risks creating ever-higher levels of cynicism – a contemptuous distrust among the public that this administration is bringing it on itself.

One poll showed 61 percent of Americans believe Mr. Obama lies some or most of the time on important matters.

Skepticism is one thing. It’s healthy. Cynicism is not. And we’re likely to see a new era of cynicism as a result of this administration’s hostile relationship with the truth. That can’t be good for the country. We need leaders we can believe in – or maybe just believe.

“Susan Rice saying to the world that Sgt. Bergdahl served his country with honor?,” Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly asked. “Are you kidding me? And that’s on top of the Benghazi stuff? Is Ambassador Rice a moron?”

Clearly not. But she and others in the administration seem to think we are.

Now that is cynicism.

1. It was Politifact, not the Washington Post, that gave Obama the Lie of the Year Award. If you complain about Obama's inaccuracies, as you should, kindly be careful with the facts in your own writing.
2. Politifact earlier gave the Lie of the Year Award to the conservative's claim that ACA was a government takeover of health care. Do I not recall seeing a similar claim on your editorial page (Dec. 10, 2013)?
3. Recall that Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin have also received Lie of the Year Awards.
4. Did this newspaper's editorial staff not cite, on Jan. 19 of this year, the well-known fake George Washington quote that “Government is not reason. Government is not eloquence. It is force. And, like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.”?
In our current polarized era, truth has indeed gone by the wayside. I would be grateful if conservative journalists, who should be setting the standard, would set a good example of care and good journalistic practice in their own work. Thank you for expressing your views, and have a great day in our wonderful country.

truth is not a marxist goal

it is simply an interchangeable tool, to be used one way when convenient
or as a lie when necessary
you didn't even mention global "warming"
that is the biggest most purpose driven lie of all
and the reasons for blocking the keystone pipeline
are lies, too
"losing" the irs emails? lies
"rogue agents in cincinnati?" lies
democrats have cleaved with the media
and are now the most dangerous threat to freedom
this nation has ever encountered

I'm more inclined to believe that the ACES researched where the "Lie of the Year" originated than your source - do you have a copy of the paper? While I honestly do not remember which paper said it, I do remember that it was a surprise that a left-wing paper printed it.

I am at a loss as to what lie Romney supposedly told? Please refresh my memory. Did it or would it have affected our country, our safety & security, health care, our freedoms, or our lives?

As for Sarah Palin, Tina Fey of SNL was doing an imitation of Ms. Palin on SNL and made up the comment that she could see Russia from her house. Somehow the mainstream media attributed that to Ms. Palin. So you'd have to refresh my memory on Ms. Palin's lie also.

Don't bother to furnish me with Utube videos or left-wing blog sites.

And yes, Obamacare (ACA) is a government take-over of our health care. No matter how you spin that people will be purchasing their insurance from insurance companies, a bureaucratic department in DC will be deciding what the insurance company will pay for, what it won't and who will receive health care. Neither your doctor nor the insurance company will be deciding that.

Even Hillary Said It Was A Lie

Heck, even Hillary said she knew Benghazi was a lie. Bill Clinton told her it would never fly. I mean that was one of the most bizarre incidents in American history with Hillary, the Secretary of State, hiding for a month while Susan Rice, told the lie over and over to influence the election.

" You Lie ! "

" you lie ! " has been the must forthright and honest statement I

have heard from a politician in the last 6 years .

The greatest ambition of this president , wholly dominated with

himself , self-conscious on seemingly desperate level , is not to

take down barriers , but to create more barriers & divisions built upon

dark lies as he disperses the light of truth thru executive order .

Both internal and external .

Little wonder this president is never photographed with any other world

leader who is recognized as his closest friend and confidant ,interceding

for each other on the world stage .

He has no friends .

Not one friend that anyone can name .

And why would he ?

Who wants a lying , betraying , weak , pussyfooting man child

standing beside them as the world burns ?

Even Bill & Hillary despise him .

And that is saying something .

It is a shame that the first black presidency had to be wasted on a

person of such defeated character and weak soul .

"Recall that Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin have also received Lie of the Year Awards."
Rhetor, actually most of what Romney and Palin said did come true. Palin said Obamacare would create death panels and it has. During the campaign Romney described exactly what would happen if we pulled all the troops out Iraq. Romney also said what Obamacare would do to the economy.

Romney's "Lie of the Year"

That Chrysler would start building Jeeps in China. Fast forward two years:
"Fiat and Chrysler announced plans Saturday to build three new Jeep models in China for that market, the biggest for the vehicles outside the United States, as they attempt to boost sales in a country where they lag behind their competitors." Politifact owes Romney and all Americans an apology.

good grief

Politifact is found at Politifact.com. If you have a computer, you can read it for yourself. All journalists should know that off the top of their heads. The Washington Post Fact Checker does not award a Lie of the Year Award.
Romney received the 2012 Lie of the Year Award for a false claim about automobile exports. Obama got the 2013 award for his false claim that you can keep your health plan--period. The Democratic National Committee got the 2011 award for a false claim about Medicare.
Sarah Palin got the 2009 Lie of the Year Award for her incorrect death panels claim. (If you all want to persist in believing such nonsense, feel free. This is America, so the 1st Amendment protects a person's right to believe and say silly things. Don't forget the ACA RFID chips and the chemtrails. Wear your tinfoil hat under the tricorner, just to be careful.)
Wilson's You Lie comment was directed at Obama's promise that illegal aliens were not eligible to buy insurance on the exchanges. Obama turned out to be right and Wilson was in error, which probably explains why most conservatives have stopped repeating his claim.
A government takeover of health care would be a system like that in the UK where the government owns the hospitals and employs the doctors and nurses as government employees. ACA clearly does not do that.
Finally, it has been many years since the Washington Post was left-wing. Furthermore, the Post's Fact Checker page routinely pillories conservatives and liberals equally. The truth, contrary to popular opinion, has no political ideology. Just Google Washington Post Fact Checker, sign in, and see for yourself.
Keep in mind that people aren't always wrong just because you don't like what they say. The Internet makes research much easier, but it also makes it easy to spread nonsense. In a general way, a person can be a liberal, or a conservative, or a truthist. Most of these comments take the conservative viewpoint. Consider being a truthist instead. Let the facts determine your opinions, my dear friends, instead of letting your opinions color your view of the facts. Obama has told plenty of lies and has made many mistakes, some of them quite inexcusable. So have conservatives. Take a deep breath. Have a great day.
There are, for the few people who care about the truth, three really good fact-checking websites. Here they are:
www.factcheck.org
www.politifact.com
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/ (requires sign-in)
There are plenty of phony fact checking websites, too, so be careful. The best test is that a real fact-checker will criticize all sides if they make an error. The fake ones only criticize one side.

Let me see if I can explain how and why Obama lies so...

Let me see if I can explain how and why Obama lies so easily with no appearance of remorse or concern.

If one looks at the teachings of the Muslims that it is alright to lie to an infidel and the teachings of Alinsky and Marx that it is alright, if not necessary, to lie to the sheeple to accomplish your revolutionary goals one sees that this is Obama's background. He has been raised to lie and deceive to get what he wants.

If you want to understand where someone is trying to go...look where they have been. Obama has been immersed in anti-colonialism, anti-Americanism, pro-socialism, pro-Marxism all his life. Why would he suddenly changed from what he has been absorbing? He hasn't.

Actually, you're correct. It was politifact that gave Obama the "Lie of the Year" Award. So you're right to point that out.

But, The Washington Post gave him 4 pinocchios, which is their highest, for the same lie!! So, you're kinda playing 6 in one, half dozen in the other!! Both awarded him their highest LIE rating possible!!

Not to mention that out of the 10 biggest Pinocchios of the year, OUR PRESIDENT got 3 of them!!! Is that not shameful?? For the President of the United States to get 3 of the top 10 lies??

and, of course...

Fact-checkers are human and sometimes they make mistakes, too. Sometimes they disagree with one another. Human life is full of imperfections, and sometimes tolerating one another's foibles is a virtue.
PS: Politifact's issue with Romney's claim about building Jeeps in China was that Romney blamed it on Obama when, in fact, Chrysler had been making plans to build Jeeps in China long before Obama took office.

You're absolutely correct!! To the extreme leftists, the ends justify the means!!

So, they can lie and lie and lie all they want; because accomplishing the goal, will make it all worth it. Plus, they have no morals to speak of, so it's not like they actually feel remorse or guilt for lying so much. You can't feel guilty when you have no conscious!!

Myfather, I'm not defending Obama's falsehoods. They cannot be defended. I'm pointing out that conservatives also have told brazen falsehoods, and urge a non-ideological view of the truth. I think I made that point quite clearly. I also pointed out that if one criticizes other people's errors, one needs to be careful not to make silly errors of one's own. When one does make mistakes, which we all do, one should own up to them. Politics is not a sport where we keep score. Politics is about the future of our nation, not about the triumph of one silly ideology over another.

It was the Washington post that gave him the Pinnochio's for lying. Same difference as Politicfact lie of the year. Romney nor Palin are president just lying politicians as the article pointed out politicians lie during campaigns. It isn't the fact they lie but what they lie about and how much-like Obama is pathological and never tells the truth. You falled to mention the litany of other lies Obama's has passed on too during the election-like the little one you mentioned of Romny and Palin. I think almost every speech is filled with either lies,, misrepresentation, or misinformation after fact checkers examined Obama's speeches.

Remember how it turns out the truth was his mother was fully covered for her cancer treatment and it was a made up story to get more support by demonizing insurance companies?

Less face it. There is no action or words beneath Obama if they would get him closer to his goals of statism.

Absolutey!! Someone could actually write an entire book, just about the numerous lies he has told!! Like during the campaign, saying the VA was a mess and he would fix it. Also, claiming it "Unpatriotic" to run up the debt and blasting Bush for doing so.

The only thing this man has promised that he DID NOT lie about was CHANGE!! Change, he has definately brought us!!!

Yesterday, I said about the border that the radical left would probably shoot people and claim the border guards did it, just to stop the border enforcement. People probably thought I was being facetious, but I wasn't at all!! It wouldn't surprise me if they did something like that.

We may never know, until the Savior returns; but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if some of the mass shootings/suicides were extreme leftists!! What better way to advocate for more gun control, than to have shootings!! The radical Islamists have their suicides bombers, what's to say the left doesn't have their suicide shooters?? Yes, the right has some radicals as well. Radicals come in all different shapes, sizes and beliefs!!
