Pledge genuine allegiance

Are we living lives that help improve the health of our republic?

  • Follow Editorials

If you pledge allegiance to the flag on a regular basis, you’re probably not part of this country’s problems.

But how much are you a part of the solutions?

It’s not enough for us to feel deep patriotism in our hearts, or to wear it on our sleeves. In order to help America remain great – or perhaps even to save it – we’ve got to match our good intentions with doing good.

We’ve got to have a revival of character, brotherhood and citizenship in America.

We need more people voting, for one thing – but mainly we need more informed voters.

We need more people joining civic clubs and other organizations that seek to do good – instead of merely flocking to organizations that expect nothing from us and provide us benefits.

We need to instill and celebrate character in the young, and we need to exhibit it ourselves and expect it in others.

We need to remember that we’ve got a public life, along with a private life. We’ve indulged our private life pretty well; just look at our waistlines! But what about our public life – which is anything we do for those outside our usual circles? Are we holding up our end in this self-governed nation?

We need a renaissance of responsibility in America.

To that end, we propose a new kind of pledge – a pledge not to the flag, but to the country. To each other. We’ve listed the Top 10 things each of us can do to help America. We’re sure you can think of other things – and we’d love to see what they are (write to us at letters@augustachronicle.com, or to our mailing address at the bottom of this page; include the subject line “For America”).

Our Founders, who knew they all risked death in declaring independence from England, once pledged to each other “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” Is it too much to ask for us to do the same, under much less dire circumstances, for the health of the republic?

Therefore, may each of us pledge:

1. To be an informed, active citizen

2. To be civil and kind

3. To have a healthy lifestyle

4. To decide what I believe, and act on it

5. To take responsibility for my life and my actions

6. To be my brother’s keeper, and do good works

7. To be the best family member, neighbor and friend that I can possibly be

8. To hold my elected representatives accountable

9. To be as self-reliant as I can

10. To be a model of unity to others

These things must seem self-evident – but are we doing them?

Witness the number of Americans who display abject ignorance of basic Americana in interviews on the street, or on civics tests. Look at the incivility, particularly in politics and media. The lack of individual responsibility is eye-popping, and the lack of accountability in government is astounding – the result of our failure to hold public officials accountable.

The good news is, these 10 acts of character, citizenship and brotherhood are uncomplicated and easily done. We just have to have the willpower. And we have to turn away from that part of American culture that mocks and denigrates such “Boy Scout” values. They’re what built America, and they’re what’s holding it together. So far.

Pledge to be informed, civil, healthy, responsible, altruistic, vigilant, self-reliant and welcoming.

That’s real allegiance.

Excellent editorial and desire; however, we have too many people here in the United States, both native born and immigrants, legal and illegal, who have absolutely no allegiance to this country.

The native born have been fed years of hate America by their culture and by the leftist school system. They have been taught only the warts of American history and none of the greatness.

Too many immigrants come here for the welfare goodies they can get. Just look at recent interviews of Mexican immigrants in LA during a US-Mexico soccer match. They booed during the Star Spangled Banner and many said they would always be Mexican.

I heard the story the other day when many in a city out West had a school board meeting on a touchy subject and a large percentage of the attendees were immigrants. They refused to recite the Pledge of Allegiance when it was requested by the chairman.

We have a big problem with perception of people here about America and our current President and administration are only making it worse.

We must get a handle on this invasion from outside or we will never be the American culture that has saved the world and produced more than any country in history to better the living conditions around the world.

Too many people look at Uncle Sam as Uncle "Sugar"...a bloated hog with teats from which to suck freebies for generations.

"Too many people look at Uncle Sam as Uncle "Sugar"...a bloated hog with teats from which to suck freebies for generations."

It goes deeper than that!! This is the richest, most blessed Country in the history of the world, period!! My personal belief is that this Country was established by God, at just the perfect time to set the standard or example for the rest of the world!! Divine providence's hand was all over the Independence of this Country!! Yes, the Country AND each individual is NOT perfect; but we try to correct our mistakes; a huge Biblical teaching!

This Country is the beacon of Freedom of the WORLD!! This Country says "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" and who else says the same thing? GOD!! Seek Him and He shall give you freedom; because He created you and gave you the greatest gift He could, which is FREE WILL!!

But anyone with common sense realizes that with Freedom, comes great responsibility!! We HAVE to behave ourselves with principals and STANDARDS!! Yes, this Country and God give us freedom, but with rules and regulations that are neccessary for people living together.

The simple fact is that many do NOT respect our rules and regulations!! The exact same can be said for God's rules and regulations; they don't like them and don't want to follow them!! They see this Country AND our God; and want to reap the same rewards that we receive, WITHOUT following the same rules we follow!! They spit in our faces, with contempt and scorn for us; all the while saying they deserve the same rewards we receive!! The United States AND God, do not work that way!!

One of the biggest misconceptions is that God want's everyone as they are!! Yes, He wants us ALL to seek Him and come to Him; but the Bible is clear, that if you're a murderer, sorcerer, drunkerd, etc; "Just as you are" isn't going to cut it!! What did Christ tell the woman "Go, and sin no more." He didn't say go and continue in thy ways!! These people expect to come HERE, and receive all the rewards; while still being loyal to THEIR traditions and Countries!! They want to CHANGE US, instead of changing themselves!! Think about that!! That would be like someone saying "I am seeking God, but He needs to change His ways to be more accepting of me." Which is exactly what many people actually say; using homosexualiy as an example; they say God created them this way and He approves of thier lifestyle. I would disagree!!

God has set standards and principals and He will NOT change!! They don't respect HIS standards and they do not respect OURS!! They go hand in hand; evidence in His blessing upon this Country!! They aren't just rebelling against the United States, they are rebelling against GOD!!! This is the final battle on earth, the battle of this time is spirtual (Ephesians 6); and eventually He will finish His plan of salvation. Then and then only, will honor and truth be reestablished!! There will be no confusion, because He will walk amoung us, teaching us!! They won't be able to confused people, because HE will be the one telling people when they're wrong; and rebelling will not be occurring at that time!!

Although I disagree with Bill

Although I disagree with Bill O'Reilly on half of what he says, his Watters World pieces should open everybody's eyes to what our youths are learning - or should I say, what they're not learning. I was ignorant of politicians' deceptive ways when I was very young, but still knew our country's history, how the government was supposed to work and I repected my family, my teachers, and authority figures. We didn't have drugs in our schools back then so we were mostly clear headed. These young people today don't have a clue, but what's worse, they don't want to get a clue. Between all their tech gadgets and their drugs, it's scary to think they may never become productive adults or worse yet, may someday be running our country.

Contrary to some comfused

Contrary to some comfused people, we are not, never have been, and hopefully, never will be a theocracy. This nation was founded on religious freedom for ALL religions, not as a bludgeon to be used by right wing "christian" extremists. If you look at the hate that is spewed and esposed in this country you'll find that the vast majority of it is coming from the right, not the left, and is getting worse by the day. Did it ever occur to you that those that didn't say the Pledge could be Jehovah's Witnesses or some other religious group that doesn't pledge to things except God? So, are these immigrants sucking off the "teat of Uncle Sugar" or "stealing our jobs"? The right wing wants to have its argument on both sides. I have a strange feeling that if Canadian immigrants were pulling for Canada, the right wouldn't have said a word. Military contractors are robbing us blind, in some cases literally, yet the right gripes about a poor person getting help feeding his or her family. Lindsey Graham threw a hissy fit and threatened to block all nomination and "tie the Senate in knots" when while working on cost cutting, SC (the top moocher state in the nation) didn't get funding to study the deeping of Charleston Harbor. Now, a mere $695,000 is planned to deeped the harbor, that already has the deepest water in the region. Gee, how could SC end up as the top moocher state is anyone's guess. He's about as whitebread as you can get, gripe at him or Lockheed-Martin that's screwed up on the F-35 so bad that the cost has doubled, and it was already ridiculously expensive, not to mention it's a crappy plane. From 2001, when design started, it's been nothing but a money dump for a plane that may not be able to land properly on carriers, has an unbelievable short flight time (and external fuel tanks blow its slealth capability), and is too complicated to work. It's a $300 million-$400 million per plane white elephant. I believe in helping people, not helping wealthy corporations waste our tax dollars by screwing up over and over again, with paid lobbyists pushing for more, and having chicken hawks pushing for us to get into more wars and kill our men and women to feed the corporations even more money.

On Being Informed

“Pledge to be informed, civil, healthy, responsible, altruistic, vigilant, self-reliant and welcoming.”

I try to do all that in my own self-interest. If it helps America, too, great. I see those traits in many who comment here. They are certainly informed and concerned about others. If Watters’ World came across our knowledgeable commenters they wouldn’t get many laughs.

I don't think the problem is

I don't think the problem is with the flag as long as you can urinate on it and burn it then no problem saluting it too, but because the pledge has "under God"aye there is the rub. Which "under God" is generic and dosn't refer to any specific "God"-perhaps Abrahamic "God" is taken as meaning by muslims, jews, and christians but it could just as well refer to Vedic-Hindu Gods too. They do serve a role in generating a national identity=course progressives would like it to be half American and half Mexican-hee,hee,hee.

If Bod's response were a piece of paper;

The proper thing to do, would be to wad it up and throw it in the trash; giving it zero credibility or further thought. That's all I'll say about that comment; because there is no reason to go farther with it. They never back their comments up with evidence and when called out, don't respond. Typical hit&run job to put left wing talking points out there!

Dee Stafford, why do you

Dee Stafford, why do you think that children aren't taught about the great things about America? What do you base that on?

Who has told you, where have you read, that it isn't taught?

It was taught to me, it was taught to my son, it is being taught to my grandchildren. Where are all these children who are not being taught this?

Please provide a link.

That's one of those myths that will not die, like "schools indoctrinate children about homosexuality" and "Children aren't taught the Pledge of Allegiance".

The teachers try, at every opportunity, to teach character. They have to, because too many parents AREN"T. And it's a losing, uphill battle. When they try, the parents complain that the teacher is picking on their child, falsely accusing them, and want to sue. "My child would NEVER do that."

It used to be that if you lied to a teacher, or stole something from school, the teacher told your parents, and you got a major butt whipping. And you knew you deserved it. And your parents were horrified and embarrassed, and would scream, "That teacher thinks we are terrible parents and not teaching you to behave!" and you got in trouble, round 2, for embarrassing them.

Now, the teacher gets reprimanded. The parents DEMAND proof. As if a teacher has nothing better to do with their time than to make up lies about children?

We don't tell parents about that stuff anymore, it's not worth the abuse the teacher gets in return.

And then when you look at the

And then when you look at the kids, and look at the parents' behavior, you understand exactly why they behave the way that they do.

When the parents are gang members, convicts, getting arrested for crimes, doing drugs, why would you think that they are teaching their children right from wrong?

When a parent smokes pot in front of their child, or shoplifts from a store, do you think they are going to say "You must respect authority, you must obey the law"?

Great list, but I would change one item:

"4. To decide what I believe, and act on it"

We'd be much better served by:

"4. To discover what is real and act on it; simply believing something to be true does not make it so"

"4. To discover what is real and act on it;

.
Discovering what is real requires a herculean effort, given the bias by the media, and the distorted and slanted view presented by ALL political factions.

No, it's better to seek the truth and hold close to your own values. More often than not, that course will guide you to where you need to be.

Sorry if I got a little maudlin and philosophical there..
