So why are Democrats constantly insulting their intelligence with disingenuous gender-war propaganda?
The left’s latest ploy to pump up the phony “war on women” is to try to convince women that men are keeping them down in the workplace, where they supposedly earn much less than men for doing the same work.
That’s not true, of course. But it does make for good pre-midterm pandering to women voters. And that was the Democrats’ primary motivation recently for trotting out their twice-failed “Paycheck Fairness Act,” a regulatory nightmare masquerading as “equal-pay legislation.”
The bill – last introduced in 2012, another election year – would allow employees to sue businesses that pay different workers different wages, regardless of whether the differences have anything to do with gender.
Say goodbye to merit-based pay, as it would be nearly impossible for employers to tie compensation to work quality, productivity or experience. It would be universal unionization.
The bill was rightly shot down by Senate Republicans.
Democrats knew the bill would fail, and they got exactly what they wanted – the chance to play liberal Luke Skywalkers fighting to protect America’s Princess Leias from evil Darth Vader Republicans.
Expect to see Wage Wars: Attack of the Clones in theaters once more before the election.
In the meantime, keep these things in mind every time you see liberals push the issue between now and November:
• Gender discrimination already is illegal, and has been since the Equal Pay Act of 1963.
• The so-called “wage gap” is a statistic that Democrats and President Obama know is highly misleading. The U.S. Census figure that women earn “77 cents” on the dollar compared to men is only true when every American salary is aggregated.
When apples-to-apples variables such as occupational choice, education, experience and hours worked are taken into account, there is no wage gap.
• Many women, in fact, earn more than men. For example, census data shows childless women in their 20s living in metropolitan areas earn 8 percent more on average than their male counterparts.
• Women outnumber men in growth industries. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, two-thirds of employees in 10 of the 15 fastest-growing occupational categories are women.
• More women attend and graduate from college than men. Department of Education statistics show women overtook men in associate’s degrees in 1978, in bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 1981 and in doctorate degrees in 2005.
Women are expected to hold the majority of all degrees through 2021, the furthest year for which forecasts are available.
Are there some instances where women are paid less than their male counterparts? Certainly – just take a look at Obama’s own White House staff, for example. And there are plenty of examples where women command higher salaries than men, and for legitimate reasons.
Is the workplace somehow made more equitable if male underwear models earn the same hourly rates as the women in the pages of a Victoria’s Secret catalog? Is that “fair”?
The Paycheck Fairness Act is feel-good legislation that would have negligible impact in the workplace, with the exception of employment lawyers who will benefit from frivolous litigation.
But it’s far more than that. It’s yet another attempt by Democrats to divide the American people into warring factions of class, race and gender that they can pit against the whole for cynical electoral gain.
Having already fanned the flames of class warfare (see the minimum-wage hike proposal) and minority angst (see immigration “reform”), Democrats are working hard to add the gender card to their campaign of discord and division – just to avoid getting routed in the next election for their disastrous policies.
All that voters need to do is look at Obamacare and other economy-strangling initiatives to get an idea of what additional Democrat-backed legislation would do to the American workforce, which now has fewer people working, or looking for work, than at any point since 1978.
Honestly, what good is empty equal-pay rhetoric to people who can’t find a job in the first place?
