Epidemic lying appears to be pre-existing condition under Obamacare

  • Follow Editorials

How unfortunate that dishonesty – with its cousins, obfuscation, back-biting and double-dealing – has become de rigueur for so many of our elected representatives.

What’s peculiar is how some of our nation’s leaders have taken disinformation to truly pathological levels, despite a modern media landscape in which the Internet and a 24-hour news cycle should make uncovering a lie easier than ever.

There is no shortage of egregious lying going on (Benghazi, anyone?) but pound-for-pound, the most profuse distortions in American politics today swirl around the largest and most wide-reaching piece of legislation in a generation: Obamacare.

The disinformation is relentless. It started early when President Obama said in June 2009 that, “If you like the plan you have, you can keep it. If you like the doctor you have, you can keep your doctor, too. The only changes you’ll see are falling costs as our reforms take hold.”

Lie, lie and lie.

That statement, and versions of it, were repeated dozens of times in the following months by the president or senior members of his administration, even after they knew what they were saying was false.

For that, The Washington Post’s Politifact website named Obama’s claim the 2013 “Lie of the Year.”

Perhaps the president was holding out hope his words would ring true through repetition. Wasn’t it communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin who said “a lie told often enough becomes truth”?

This president can’t be bothered with truth or facts. He is never wrong. Notice how often he obfuscates past mistruths while practicing his own revisionist history by peppering vague statements with pet phrases such as “let me be clear,” “I’ve said repeatedly” and “as I’ve said in the past.”

This is a man comfortable in the knowledge that nobody – certainly nobody inside the Beltway or Washington press corps – has the nerve to call him out.

Being only April, competition for the 2014 “Lie of the Year” is still fierce. Odds are, the winning whopper will again be tied to Obamacare.

We proffer Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius as a candidate, for trying to distance the administration from the 7-million-person enrollment goal for the government-run health exchange. In February, when it appeared the goal wouldn’t be met, she said the figure came from the Government Accountability Office.

“I’m not sure where they got that number,” she said.

Really? Perhaps the widespread notion of a “7 million” goal took root when Sebelius herself told reporters in June: “We’re hopeful that 7 million is a realistic target.”

Or perhaps last Sept. 30 – the eve of the disastrous HealthCare.gov website rollout – when she said: “I think success looks like at least 7 million people having signed up by the end of March 2014.”

Bearing past lies and current prevarications in mind, can anyone really believe the Obama administration’s happy announcement that it met the 7-million sign-up goal?

Then there’s Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who lied about lying about Obamacare.

Recall in February when he said on the Senate floor that stories of Americans being hurt by Obamacare were just “tales, stories made up from whole cloth, lies distorted by the Republicans to grab headlines or make political advertisements.”

The Nevada Democrat shamelessly denied ever making the statement after being confronted with the fact that, yes, many Americans now pay more for insurance and have been cut off from policies they were happy with and doctors they liked.

“That is simply untrue,” he said last month on the Senate floor. “I have never come to the floor, to my recollection, and I never said a word about any of the examples that Republicans have given regarding Obamacare and how it’s not very good.”

We can only assume such brazen lying is the by-product of America’s mass attention-deficit disorder and left-leaning mainstream media that seem eager to sweep liberal transgressions under the carpet.

In the past, it was much more difficult to catch a politician in a lie. But once caught, accountability was swift and severe.

These days, uncovering a lie is child’s play. It’s the accountability part that keeps getting harder.

Once again the ACES hits the nail on the head....

Once again the ACES hits the nail on the head.

I sometimes am confused as to what Obama really is. Is he a pathological lair? Is he stupid? Is he ignorant and spouts only what others tell him the situation is? Could that be why he can't say "Good Morning." without a teleprompter?

I don't think he knows what questions to ask to get to the bottom of a situation and to discover what the problems maybe. He appears to be living in an alternate universe. He has never done anything that required original thought--only regurgitation of what those around him think.

He shows no intellectual curiosity and has no sense of history and is utterly clueless about how it impacts on us and events today---with the exception of slavery and Jim Crow. These two events are the prisms through which he sees events and are his only frame of historical reference.

It really appears that the left is coming unhinged when it starts lying about its lies. The are so confident the lapdog media are not even going to look at tapes of their speeches to call them on their lies. No matter, their base of sheeple will continue to vote for them no matter what they say or do.

Having had NO executive

Having had NO executive experiance he is in WAY over his head. That the press swollows his hog swell is pathetic. Take the claims that 7 million signed up for health care. Government officials a week or so ago couldn't tell you any numbers about health care and the people who signed up, the web site wasn't capable of generating the numbers. On April 1st health care dot gov, after crashing twice the day before, was working well enough so the numbers could be extrapolated. Well April 1st is April Fools day, so I guess it would be appropriate, right? Sounds a lot like the cooked unemployment figures before the election when California's unemployment figures were left out of the mix. Now President Obama says Health care dot gov is working great. Well just another lie. The 25% of health care dot gov that lets you pay still doesn't work. Affordable, not really ask the lady from Washington who Obama gave a shout out to during the last press roll out. Cheaper premiums and better coverage, nope Obama's simply wrong again! I could go on with Obama's other lies but why bother they are well documented. If this law is so wonderful why does Obama keep changing it? So Obama can lie more?

Well he lied about a smidgeon

Well he lied about a smidgeon of misconduct concerning Benghazi as testimony is revealing too. We will see about the IRS. Blatant lies, blatant fudging and manipulating numbers, it's shameless. All Dems are blatant liars is what parsimony dictates. Ridiculous to state in front of cameras and state things and then have the gaul to deny ever having said it-either he is delusional or a liar.

The first step in ridding

The first step in ridding ourselves these vermin in political power is to acknowledge its existence. However, there are too many people that purposely support the leftist agenda, the mainstream media. They are aware that they can persuade the ignorant to believing anything.

The ignorant vote is where the battle is being waged. These people will always allow others to lead them by the nose all the way to the voting booth. And the mainstream media is their primary sheep herder.

In print and especially the broadcast media, a majority of these entities have openly taken a left leaning stand. They are openly brainwashing the ignorant segment of the population.

Then you have those few who are true leftist that believe Marxist rhetoric. Throw them in with the ignorant vote and you have formidable group of people voting for the leftist ideology.

In short, the lies have tilted the scale at the voting booth and will continue to tilt it in the direction of the leftist unless the right can persuade the ignorant.

The right must become the herders of the ignorant, otherwise leftist lies will consume us.

The problem is fifty percent

The problem is fifty percent of the population pay no taxes, get free health care or reduced to little, and their vote is bought and paid for-so Obama really has fed this divide too. They have no stake in the game so they could care less what a Dem does if they keep getting fed. Likely as this group grows in size and dependency it will result in failure-cause it isn't viable long term-which then these folks will act like the Greeks.

Pants on fire?

Mike, let's assume for the time that every example you claim is a Democratic lie is true. Your column today fails to acknowledge all the Republican lies about Obamacare, all the political ads featuring anecdotes about people allegedly facing immense increases in premiums they couldn't afford, almost every one of which turned out to be distorted or simply untrue. What about those lies, Mike? Your half truth is still half lie. Check your pants, Mike.

CBS news suggest the Rep

CBS news suggest the Rep concerns weren't lies because the cost of health care is rising for many-dependent on state (blame SCOTUS for that). http://www.cbsnews.com/news/study-insurance-costs-to-soar-under-obamacare/ Dang EEL it sounds like you are reiterating the lie of Reid that all the people with increased costs were liars-you aren't saying that are you? My bet is every single posit of Rep and even Tea party over problems with the law will become a reality, but I hope not.

The majority of the American people are alone

responsible for this and have shed both responsibility and accountability.
They get what they richly deserve.
And, I expect as new leaders are elected in 2014 and 2016, the democrats will blame them for this catastrophe.

The current liberal/progressive mind is the product...

The current liberal/progressive mind is the product of over 100 years of evolving thought about humans and their place in society.

One of the early seed sowers of this idea of taking care of people was Thomas Dewey, the inventor of the Dewey Decimal System used in libraries and a contributor to the woeful foundation of educational philosophy that has led our educational system to where it is today.

Dewey believed as modern liberals/progressives do that out of 100 people only 3 have the potential of being leaders. The other 97 are effectively sheep that were not capable to think for themselves and therefore must be led, fed, helped, and otherwise taken care of by the 3.

The current liberals/progressives believe they are the 3 and know what's best for the rest of us. As such, they will pass laws and regulations to take care of us because they are the anointed ones and we must conform to their visions of Utopia.

Sadly, although I disagree with what Dewey's philosophy was, it does appear in modern society we have evolved over the last 50 years a significant group who fall in the category of his 97%. The percentage is not that high but it's there and is climbing because of the left continuing to round up sheeple for life on the liberal plantation...to whom the softness of the velvet chains are comforting rather than confining.

Perhaps the reader who gave a thumb down to my post regarding a source for deestafford's Dewey claim would explain his / her problem with my request. Of course deestafford has, so far, not responded, but there's plenty of time for that.

SOMEONE out there, should be able to post a source link. I'll check back in awhile....

Just wanted let you know the good news about Affordable Care Act hitting over 7 million signups. Republican is sinking in the polls, and all the false horror stories told by House Speaker John Boehner about Obamacare have destroyed the Republican brand. It's creating a perfect storm that could bring huge Democratic gain in the House and Senate in the November election.

oh, eel... are you the poster boy for the article?

thomas dewey was a socialist
the education of teachers even today uses his ideas
but he was a socialist... from one of his books
"To pursue change through politics can be
frustratingly slow; using education to change the world
is far more efficient. The ultimate result of
such change is political and social transformation."
he made many other comments with the same meaning as mr Stafford wrote
but don't get so offended when another poster leaves the site
you're still our liberal Sally Fields... we like you, we really like you

do any of you care?

Seriously, do any of you posters care if what one of your fellow thinkers posts is true? Can any of you confirm that John Dewey ever claimed only 3% of people had the potential for leadership? Perhaps he did, but that has not yet been proven. If he did not, then much of deestafford's post about Dewey's alleged liberal elitism is undermined. Also if he did not, then deestafford passed off an unsubstantiated, and probably false claim.
The real bottom line here is don't post a statement of alleged fact if you are unable or unwilling to back it up. It's a matter of intellectual integrity. Which brings me back to Mike's piece today. In my view it is also a matter of intellectual integrity, or call is simple honesty, to acknowledge when criticisms you make against your opponents also apply to your fellows. Mike failed that standard today.

But surely one of you conservatives, who outnumber liberal posters here by maybe 20 to 1, can find a source for deestafford's claim about Dewey! I don't care who posts a link, just someone do it! I am beginning to suspect Dewey never said any such thing, but am still prepared to be proven wrong.

First of all, the Dewey who invented Decimal system was named Melvil. Thomas Dewey was a Republican presidential candidate who lost to Truman. Past that, I can't find anything about the 3% quote. Maybe I'm confused. Probably.

Here's just one:

Washington— A new Americans for Prosperity television ad highlighting a Michigan cancer patient who is critical of Rep. Gary Peters is making representations that aren’t consistent with what she told The Detroit News three weeks ago in an interview.

The $750,000 anti-Obamacare ad launched this week in Michigan features Dexter’s Julie Boonstra, a leukemia patient who received a cancellation notice last year from her health insurer. It’s the most emotional attack ad yet against Senate candidate Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, as Boonstra implies Peters’ vote in favor of the health care law threatens her life.

“Now, the out-of-pocket costs are so high, it’s unaffordable,” Boonstra, 49, says in the ad. “If I do not receive my medication, I will die.”

The Detroit News interviewed Boonstra Jan. 28 when she was the guest of Republican Rep. Tim Walberg of Tipton at the State of the Union address in Washington. The one-minute ad makes no mention that Boonstra successfully enrolled in a new Blue Cross plan where she’s able to retain her University of Michigan oncologist and continues to receive the life-saving oral chemotherapy.

The ad also does not mention that Boonstra’s health care premiums were cut in half when she enrolled in a new Blue Cross plan, to $571 a month from $1,100. The new plan, however, increases out-of-pocket costs, such as doctor’s visits going from $20 to $50, she told The News.
