What about freedom here?

First lady's comments on unfettered media should be heeded at home

  • Follow Editorials

And now, your daily dose of irony.

First lady Michelle Obama took thinly veiled jabs at China’s censorship of media and the Internet while on her spring trip.

Meanwhile, her husband is about to abandon U.S. control over administration of the Internet, and his administration consistently earns a reputation for being the most secretive and opaque since Richard Nixon’s.

“It is so important for information and ideas to flow freely over the Internet and through the media because that’s how we discover the truth, that’s how we learn what’s really happening in our communities, in our country and our world,” Mrs. Obama said at Peking University.

“My husband and I are on the receiving end of plenty of questioning and criticism from our media and our fellow citizens, and it’s not always easy, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world because time and again, we have seen that countries are stronger and more prosperous when the voices of – and opinions of all – their citizens can be heard,” she said.

Those comments may have come across as more sincere if not for the White House’s persistent stonewalling.

Don’t just take our word for it.

An Associated Press analysis of federal Freedom of Information Act data last year found that the administration censored or outright denied access to government files more than ever since Obama took office.

Don’t forget the Federal Communications Commission attempted to embed regulators in broadcast newsrooms under the supposedly benign guise of a “Multi-Market Study of Critical Information Needs” before calling it off earlier this year.

More startling is the 2014 World Press Freedom Index by the advocacy group Reporters Without Borders, which reported the U.S. has fallen from 32nd to 46th in press freedom under the Obama administration.

New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson last year said Obama’s White House “is the most secretive White House that I have ever been involved in covering.” Times reporter James Risen, a Pulitzer Prize winner, leveled an even more searing indictment at a journalism conference last week when he said the Obama administration is “the greatest enemy of press freedom that we have encountered in at least a generation.”

You know the problem is serious when employees of the Times – the standard bearer of liberal journalism – are crying foul.

The first lady’s musings on press freedom apparently didn’t apply to her own press corps. The Washington Times wrote that reporters were having difficulty getting such innocuous details as what Mrs. Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping ate during their dinner.

“Reporters say that they have been blocked from events, screamed at by officials, held back with red tape and told not to move from prepositioned lookouts, possibly to avoid taking embarrassing photos,” The Washington Times reported.

Since China’s communist government controls its media and blocks Western social networking sites, the citizens of China are oblivious to the opacity of the Obama administration.

Sadly, many Americans are becoming oblivious, too.

The first lady should be applauded for speaking out abroad in favor of free speech.

She should lecture her husband about domestic press freedom when she returns home.

An Obama basically saying "Do

An Obama basically saying "Do as I say, not as I do". Anything really surprising about that?

Government administrations being secretive? Really? Who woulda thunk it!!

This man has lied to our faces so many times, and hasn't paid a single price of ANY of them!! This story is the least of their lies!! Every administration is secretive and stalls FOI requests. Also, every administration lies, this administration has just turned it into a art form!! You could literally catch this man with his hand in someone's pocket, removing their wallet; then he would tell you he was just making sure it was safe, and people would believe him!!

He is the type person, if someone caught him smoking dope; he would tell them he found it on a little kid and took it to protect the kid, and is just disposing of it and people would praise him as a hero!!

Most sycophants in the media give him a pass. I have to ask this question - if this president was not black - would he be given a pass?

Democrats and the main stream

Democrats and the main stream media have been living in a dream world sense 08. They succeeded in demonizing Bush and the Republicans to a point where even some conservatives began to believe the rhetoric.

Now the dems. and the media are attempting to paint a rosy picture on one of the worse presidents in history. However, as the old saying goes, you can put lip stick on a pig and you still have only a pig.

The mainstream media and Obama sycophants just can't get passed his color or his snake oil salesmanship, to admit he and his policies are a total failure.

These supporters of the "Dear Leader" are walking around handing out free tickets on your next cruise aboard the Titanic. A total and absolute Greek tragedy.

Liberals Are Off Limits

I really don't think it's because he's black that he's given so many passes by the press. It's because he's a liberal. Look at the breaks they give Hillary and gave Bill. They have this theme out now that past problems with Bill's tenure are off limits if she runs. There is so much she was in the middle of that should be questioned.

Three different hand writing experts, the best around, said Vince Foster's suicide note was a forgery. Did the press investigate like they do with a lane closure in NJ? Heck no.

The "Empress'' during her boondoggle spring break trip...

The "Empress" during her boondoggle spring break trip for her, her daughters, and 90-person entourage to China did not miss a chance to talk negative about America and how it has discriminated against so many different types of people in its history and how rough she and her husband had it growing up. She has wasted tax money so lavishly that Marie Antionette (sp) could not have dreamt of even if she were high on marijuana.

She lied about his background saying he was a college "professor" when he was merely a lecturer. He insinuated she grew up poor when in reality her father was a well connected ward boss.

This woman has the gall to stay in a 3,400 sq foot, $8,500 a day suite and has excluded the press from this taxpayers financed multi-million dollar trip. Her mother has incurred the ire of the hotel staff with her incessant demands and rude behavior.

I don't know why people put the "since Nixon" on their description of the secrecy of this administration. It goes way beyond anything Nixon ever thought about. His actions are those of a ruler rather than a people's representative and leader.

I agree that he is getting the free ride because he is black. The media, the left, and many on the right don't want to criticize him for fear of being called a racist. What a shame so many in this country has put political correctness ahead of doing what is best for America.

The Chronicle is repeating the lie that the FCC tried to embed regulations into newsrooms. The Chronicle knows that the FCC must report to Congress every three years on "the barriers that may prevent entrepreneurs and small business from competing in the media marketplace, and pursue policies to eliminate those barriers." The work was contracted out and was scheduled to be a pilot program in only one station.

...has a point. Liberal politicians do get a pass. If all liberal politicians were subjected to the same scrutiny that conservatives receive, there is no doubt we'd have a "higher class" of representatives in DC! But - O gets a little extra pass. I'm curious to see how history treats him. I'm sure short term history will be, let's say, extremely selective, I'm curious as to how "long term" history will treat him, say 30+ years from now.

That will be an excellent measure of freedom and openness in our society. Will truth or narrative rule the day?

She also said that it was every parents desire to leave a better future for the next generation. So, I wonder if she actually believes that leaving our children a national debt of 23 trillion "a better future"? Sigh. Such hipocrisy from the couple in the WH.

Man, I wish it were so! I help out at the S.A. on occasion, and can honestly say many parent's desires have nothing to do with their children!

Maybe if Michelle actually cared, and was willing to confront reality instead of merely spouting platitudes, maybe a few more people would pull up their pants and try to do right by their children!

General comment

This editorial just goes in depth more to make moderate Democrats believe they have made A HUGH MISTAKE by voting for Obama the secound time!! This editorial along with other "BROKEN CAMPAIGN PROMISSES", just should even more make US moderates feel guilty of being FOOLED by Obama!! ONE MORE THING, I would LOVE to know just how many tax payer dollars have been spent on Air-Force One, and Mrs. Obama's travels!! Can it REALLY be said that 33% of their travels and vacations were absolutely necessary??!! I would TRULY believe that George W. and Mitt Romney should address this as many people understand the value of a tax payer dollar!!!!

'twas merely a question - a legitimate question. Sometimes questions that make us think also make us squirm just a wee bit. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion, and nothing wrong with my question (IMHO). I'm truly curious. Do you believe that Bill Clinton, or Jimmy Carter would skate (no doubt they would skate) AS MUCH as Obama has been allowed?

I'm willing to admit that I may be attributing purely sickening, sycophant, unquestioning, drooling, brain-numbed, blind, obedience to the idol of progressivism, to something other than what it is - which is a pure hypnotized lack of depth, and purposeful ignoring of societal ills.

Although it appears to me to be extremely extravagant; I would like to see a comparative analysis of past administrations' costs in adjusted dollars.

At a minimum, it is a slap in the face of working Americans who are struggling to make ends meet in these tough economic times. Purely insulting as a matter of fact.

And you know this for a fact? Perhaps their number of IRS audits has inexplicably increased (It happens to MANY conservative commentators lately.) All I'm saying is that you have no idea whether or not someone is trying to stop them or not, so you shouldn't state it as if it is a known fact.

..said "Please note that the ACES regularly publishes very negative articles about Obama"..

Perhaps you're confused about the difference between "articles" and "opEd" columns. Though I can't blame you, because most media outlets treat articles as oped.

That being said, the AC does a pretty good job keeping the two separate, though they do insist on running stories from the major wire sources who've become more and more about a prewritten narrative versus actual news stories.

But local news versus the editorial page is usually evident. But like I said, I'm not surprised you don't know the difference.
