Bad signs for Augusta

University's new campus gateways show shameful breach of trust

  • Follow Editorials

The campus gateway signs for Georgia Regents University Augusta are up – but there’s one key word missing: Augusta.

Here’s another word that’s gone missing at GRU Augusta.

When GRU Augusta officials struck an agreement with leaders of the grassroots “Save the A” campaign in October 2012, the implied intent was blindingly obvious. “Augusta” would be included – according to GRU Augusta President Ricardo Azziz – in the school’s “official logo, brand name and all marketing and communication efforts.

“What we will see, and what the world will see and what the state will see will be Georgia Regents University Augusta,” Azziz said then.

So why can’t it be seen on the school’s entrance signs? A sign is one of the most basic “communication efforts” you can undertake. And Azziz couldn’t even be counted on to appropriately accomplish that. His message seems clear: If something means a lot to Augustans, it appears to mean very little to him.

We share the profound disappointment of this community that the word of GRU Augusta’s president apparently means nothing. More than this latest affront being about entrance signs, it’s about keeping your word. Azziz didn’t.

And if GRU Augusta can’t be trusted with honoring a community’s clear wishes with these signs, can the community trust GRU Augusta under other circumstances?

Let's see if the recent local appointment to the Board of Regents has enough cahones to do something about this or will he like the other Regents carry Azzizzzzizzzz's water.

Egg On Regents' Faces

Does anyone believe Azziz will retire in Augusta when he finally leaves office? Heh. I thought Deke’s former PR person, whom the state is paying six figures, was going to help Azziz create a better impression? She’s not doing too well so far. Tell her, David Brond and the Board of Regents for me that Azziz is a liar.

It's settled...

Azziz has settled one thing, his word is worth nothing. From this point forward, no one who deals with him in any capacity will believe anything he says. Every promise he makes will have to be in writing. He is not a man of his word.

AZZIZ lied plain and simple. The guy must be a disciple of Obama and nothing he says should ever be believed.

They don't care, especially not Azziz.

I don't know what they threatened the 'Save the A' people with regarding MCG if they didn't back off--perhaps moving the whole darn thing to Athens, but whatever it was it sure worked.

That little bit of PR fluff concession showed that 'Save the A' had done nothing more effective than caving in to these culture terrorists. Azziz and his toady supporters dealt with Augusta's initial outrage easily enough, so why in the world would they think twice or for more than a few seconds about giving Augusta the middle finger salute now?

The Name Had Been Chosen...

...before Azziz even arrived in Augusta, most likely. Probably the day Gov. Deal hired him in the first place. That's probably when the devised the "survey" scam to trick folks into believing they had any say at all.

None of the decisions about GRU are in the hands of either the employees, or the taxpayers. The Ruling Elite know what's best for we "little people" and they're going to do what they damned well please.

'Shut up and pay your taxes' should become their new motto.

Worrying About The Wrong Things

Okay, let's see -

Augusta's urban core looks like an artillery-shelled war zone, complete with collapsing old residential houses, pot-holed roads, and dilapidated vacant businesses.

The skyline hasn't changed in decades.

The unemployment rate in Augusta is 7.7%, with over 20,000 people who are officially counted as unemployed.

The city sits next to a nuclear waste dump, aka SRS.

32% of Augusta residents live below the poverty level.

Augusta has the worst infant mortality rate in the state, and is 4 times higher than the national average.

The city government is run by clowns - literally.

So ACES, you guys are worried about a sign???

What Specsta said

Seriously. No one outside of the Save the A crowd really cares and none of them supported with anything other than lip service when it was named anything else.

The morale of the story - When you let your investments go to waste, someone else will take them away from you and do what they want with them. Put your money where your mouth is, Augusta, or this is a lesson you will get to learn frequently.
