Several bad signs

Bogus sign-language interpreter prompts disturbing questions

  • Follow Editorials

On a stage in which the world’s leaders were memorializing a man – Nelson Mandela – who captivated the globe, a previously unknown and silent interpreter for the deaf stole the spotlight.

And for good reason: The story just gets curiouser and curiouser.

Thamsanqa Jantjie first gained notoriety after experts began claiming he wasn’t signing the world leaders’ speeches in any language they could detect. American media began lampooning him as a goofy fake.

Later, however, he admitted he has schizophrenia and was even hallucinating as the world leaders spoke, hearing voices and imagining that angels were descending.

It’s odd enough that someone with no discernible signing skills, and an admitted violent past, could get so close to so many leaders – including the president of the United States, whom one would think would be the most closely guarded man in the world.

Where was the Secret Service? You realize, of course, that they’d check you out pretty darn thoroughly were you in that position.

But it gets even better: Reports now indicate a cousin and friends of his say Jantjie was once in a group that burned two men by putting tires around their necks and setting them ablaze.

He never stood trial for the killings because he wasn’t mentally fit to, his acquaintances told the Associated Press.

Nor was this the first time his signing has been called into question.

“The Deaf Federation of South Africa has said it filed a complaint ... about bogus signing by Jantjie at a previous event where South African President Jacob Zuma was present,” the Associated Press wrote.

What in the world?

How could someone like this get so close and chummy with so many world leaders? Did no one do a background check on this guy?

What if an assassin had made it to Jantjie’s prime spot?

Some folks wanted to focus on the “selfie” – the self portrait taken with a cell phone – that President Obama took with another world leader. It caused a stir in American media, which is pretty silly. It was just a human moment between two people who happen to be in the trenches of history. Leave it be.

What we don’t understand is how the Secret Service allowed someone so odd, allegedly fake and potentially dangerous so close to our president. It matters not that South African authorities are responsible; so must the Secret Service be, for this most powerful and controversial of the world’s leaders.

Forget the silliness – including the meaningless criticism of the president’s handshake with Raul Castro of Cuba. What’s he supposed to do, slap him upside the face?

We want to know how such a blatant security breach occurred on such a conspicuous stage.

There needs to be accountability in South Africa and Washington.

What? You mean the same

What? You mean the same Secret Service who was caught with prostitues, instead of clearing and securing a hotel the President was to stay at the next day? You mean the same Secret Service who arrive ahead of the President to secure the buildings he will be at. The same Secret Service who've been caught intoxicated, while securing those buildings? You mean THAT secret service? Nope, I have no idea why such a person could slip through their security checks. Maybe because they were too drunk to read his name clearly on the Security forms.

Bottom line is, when you have ZERO discipline within your ranks, THIS is what you get!! It's very clear that discipline is NOT a top priority for Obama, or any leftist for that matter!! Look at how many scandals have happened during his administration, then look at how many people have been fired for them? Accountability anyone? When you have no discipline, this stuff happens!! This is noone's fault but OBAMA!!

NO Surprises

Obama typically makes little sense when he talks so, it is fitting to have a baffoon signing the non-sense coming from Obama's mouth. I think he should be put on the Whitehouse payroll so he can sign each time Obama speaks. Garbage in Garbage out. . .

it was art!

the man is taking ridicule for his art!
what does a man have to do? cut off his ear?
and O's message, any and all of O's messages
can only be communicated truthfully
with a barrage of mindless hand gestures
and the secret service must think they are in some sort of
strawberry field
where Living is easy with eyes closed
and you're Misunderstanding all you see
Nothing is real
And nothing to get hung about
cause really, what does it matter anyway?
i mean, no one did a background check on O!
and what damage has he caused?

Maybe the NSA should have had their eyes on this guy.

And Bod, how dare you use these comments to ridicule people who live in the South? There is nothing racist or bigoted in the comments except through your eyes.

I am very sorry if you have personally been discriminated against, held back from your potential, not afforded any special advantages to make up for past wrongs.

Nothing racist or bigoted?

Nothing racist or bigoted? Homies and home boys? Nah, nothing racist there. I've done very well thank you, lived up to my potential fairly well (I probably could have done more but believe family time is more important than money), hold multiple degrees, and haven't had a lot of past wrongs done to me SINCE I'M WHITE. The trash the right has slung at this President is unbelievable. Bush caught a lot from his policies, but he started by losing the popular vote and starting 2 wars, one under false pretenses. I didn't think he was the smartest guy around and firmly believe Cheney, Wolfowitzm and the other neocons were running the show, but thought Bush was a decent guy. The utter garbage the people on here sling at Obama is disgusting. This right wing tool and sorry excuse for a paper just eggs it on. If it was said about a local politician they'd snatch it down an send you an abuse warning in a heartbeat. Freedom of the press if you own the press. They should have clamped down long ago and alowed only decent policy arguments and not the libelous garbage that's been printed, but then, they've been guilty of printing a lot of it themselves, from the birth certificate nonsense on.

the true racists are now the liberals, BOD

to go to bad schools
liberals FORCE POOR BLACK KIDS
to be uneducated
liberals FORCE POOR BLACK KIDS
to a life of dependency on government handouts
education is separate, and very unequal
liberals did that
liberals FORCE POOR BLACK KIDS
to do what George Wallace could not
FORCE POOR BLACK KIDS to do
liberals are the new kkk
and there is something wrong with that
but obviously not to you

Nope, I do think things

Nope, I do think things deserve criticism. The nut sign language guy? Obama didn't have squat to do with that. And see the above comment, Low tech teleprompter. That's what I'm talkning about. The liberals force kids to go to bad schools nonsense. The right wing kills funding for schools. In Ga. the state will send more per pupil for kids in the charter schools that right wingers like Alice Walton dumped $600,000 in between DUI's to pass the Amendment than per kid in public school. Nathan and the GOP has been cutting school funding while giving tax breaks to corporations. They want to have crappy public schools and want to have a low minimum wage to they can have a steady stream of dirt poor employees. Argue about the policy. Why the policy is bad. Who actually caused the policy. Not these fake scandals that Issa and Fox cook up. Most posts on here are insult, fantasy from Fox, WND, and kook sites than fact and policy discussion.

I dont' know maybe the CIA

I dont' know maybe the CIA worries that Obama would let them die like Ambassador Stevens in Benghazi.
Georgia like many states have made steep cuts to education funding since the start of the recession and, in many states, those cuts deepened over the last year. Elementary and high schools are receiving less state funding in the 2012-13 school year than they did last year in 26 states, and in 35 states school funding now stands below 2008 levels — often far below.
States made these cuts after the deepest recession in 70 years hit beginning in late 2007, precipitating a historic collapse in state revenues. Because states relied heavily on spending reductions in response to the recession, rather than on a more balanced mix of spending cuts and revenue increases, funding for schools and other public services fell sharply. While emergency aid from the federal government reduced the severity of cuts to school funding in the years immediately following the onset of the recession, Congress allowed that aid largely to expire at the end of the 2011 fiscal year, before state revenues had recovered from the recession.

""More proof that Augusta has some of the most disgusting, uneducated, uninformed, and vile citizens in the country. The South hasn't changed much since the days of slavery and Jim Crow. Sadly, I doubt that it ever will."
Sad such bigotry is still alive today. Vile isn't it? I think there are meds for such delusions.

"The right wing kills funding

"The right wing kills funding for schools. In Ga. the state will send more per pupil for kids in the charter schools"

In the past ten years, we've spent more money on education than the past 150 combined!!! Yet, Bod wants to say we are cutting spending!!! This is what the liberals do and it makes me SICK!!! Got a problem??? THROW MONEY AT IT!!

We DO NOT have a education FUNDING problem, but we DO have a serious DISCIPLINE problem in public schools!!! THAT is the biggest difference in PRIVATE schools and PUBLIC schools, that liberals will NEVER admit!! Private schools are VERY well disciplined, or YOUR GONE, period!! Yes, they still have the small problems any other school has, but the more serious problems are almost non-existent.

So, why will liberals NOT admit the problems with public school? Because the public education system is one of the main TOOLS, the left uses to indoctrinate the most impressionable people, our YOUTH. They NEED more and more kids in public school, not less!! They do NOT want people sending their children to private schools, especially not Christian private schools. Liberals want to teach these kids the liberal "anything goes" society! I promise you, DISCIPLINE is NOT at the top of their list!!

But yet, this Country just continues to do EXACTLY what Bodhisattva is suggesting. THROW MORE MONEY AT IT. This Country has gone INSANE. We keep doing the same thing, over and over and expecting different results!!

We ARE disgusting, uneducated, uninformed and vile to Bodhisattva, simply because our views are not in line with hard leftist views!!! That is the bottom line!! With the hard left, if you're not for them, you are against them. If you're against them, they HATE YOU and will attack you at any given opportunity!! They will lie about you, attack you personally, demean you, discredit you, etc. When you don't believe as THEY do, there is NOTHING off limits, as shown by MSNBC and their minions!!

"Bush caught a lot from his policies, but he started by losing the popular vote and starting 2 wars, one under false pretenses."

Darn right he did!! They called him a murderer and actually wanted to prosecute him for a War that MANY, MANY democrats voted for!!! Do I really need to list all the democrats who voted for the "illegal" war???

Your hypocrisy is what's disgusting around here!! Then you want to throw RACE into the equation, just like leftists do EVERY TIME someone questons the great Obamasiah!!!

Here is a clue; when someone doesn't agree with Obama, THAT doesn't mean it's because of the color of his skin!! STOP thinking with race on your mind all the time!! When someone uses the word "Homie" or "Home boys" that is NOT racist!! Again, this is just more PROOF that YOU are the person who thinks with RACE all the time!!

Homie or Home Boy basically mean the same thing!! A "Home boy" is someone usually from the same neighborhood as you. Because of MOVIES, people started believing it was a "black thing" but it was and is NOT!! Many WHITE groups, Hispanice groups and other groups, ALL used and still use the term!!

So, where is the RACE in this? Besides from YOU???

I don't think anyone would want any harm to happen to President Obama, because then he couldn't be tried and convicted for war crimes, and treason. Ho,ho,ho. That's pretty funny. Well we've got Obama with another whopper lie in his stealing of the last election. Remember before the last election how he got bin Laden and how Al -Qaeda was decimated, now we find they are in 12 countries thousands fold in numbers. He is a poster child for recruitment. That will be compared to Bush's victory moment on the ship.
