This is accountability?

Media barely sniff at presidential administration scandals

The comedy show Saturday Night Live once did a hilarious parody of a corporate sexual harassment training video. The skit used the good-looking star quarterback Tom Brady to show how to avoid a sexual harassment lawsuit at work.

The video’s three simple rules were:

1) Be handsome.

2) Be attractive.

3) Don’t be unattractive.

Similar rules apparently apply when it comes to avoiding presidential administration scandals:

1) Be handsome.

2) Be a Democrat.

3) Don’t be a non-Democrat.

At no time in memory has an administration been so up to its eyeballs in scandal as this one, and yet so largely untouched by them:

• Its “Fast and Furious” program, which actually helped arm mega-dangerous Mexican drug cartels with high-powered weapons, used to kill untold people, including Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

Accountability: zero.

• The Benghazi scandal, in which our outpost in Libya was left unsecured and was attacked on the 9-11 anniversary in 2012. This administration lied about what led to the attack, and has prevented survivors from telling their stories.

Accountability: nearly zero. Four dead Americans, no suspects in custody, and minimal upbraiding of State Department staff – with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton actually saying what led to the attack doesn’t matter at this point.

• For expediency, we’ll list three distinct scandals here: Justice Department spying on the news media; National Security Agency spying on millions of Americans; and the IRS targeting of conservative Americans for harassment and red tape.

Accountability: nearly zero.

On that last item: An administration official at the center of the IRS scandal, liberal political hatchet-woman Lois Lerner, is now being allowed to ride off into the sunset of retirement, after being neck-deep in the scandal – and after months of “paid leave,” which most of us recognize as compulsory vacation time.

Are we supposed to be impressed with her exit? Is it going to be billed as some kind of accountability for the administration’s use of the most feared agency of government to burden and debilitate its political foes? Is this supposed to end the matter?

This is something straight
out of the Eastern European
political handbook, except that the IRS didn’t actually poison the administration’s enemies; they did the bureaucratic equivalent.

We frankly find Ms. Lois Lerner to be one of the most despicable, reprehensible figures in American politics in quite some time – her standing only made worse by her arrogant refusal to come clean to Congress.

Have you no sense of decency, madam? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?

When elected officials and their minions are allowed to use the imposing, tax-paid forces of federal agencies to punish people for their beliefs, then truly the America of our predecessors is no longer.

Paid leave and sun-soaked retirements? This is accountability?

And where are the media? They can dog Lindsay Lohan and hand us Miley Cyrus ad nauseam, but they have no taste for scandals that are corrupting our system of self-governance? One media watchdog counted zero references to Lerner slinking away on the big three TV networks.

Oh, that’s right. Be handsome. Be a Democrat. Don’t be a non-Democrat.
