This is accountability?

Media barely sniff at presidential administration scandals

  • Follow Editorials

The comedy show Saturday Night Live once did a hilarious parody of a corporate sexual harassment training video. The skit used the good-looking star quarterback Tom Brady to show how to avoid a sexual harassment lawsuit at work.

The video’s three simple rules were:

1) Be handsome.

2) Be attractive.

3) Don’t be unattractive.

Similar rules apparently apply when it comes to avoiding presidential administration scandals:

1) Be handsome.

2) Be a Democrat.

3) Don’t be a non-Democrat.

At no time in memory has an administration been so up to its eyeballs in scandal as this one, and yet so largely untouched by them:

• Its “Fast and Furious” program, which actually helped arm mega-dangerous Mexican drug cartels with high-powered weapons, used to kill untold people, including Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

Accountability: zero.

• The Benghazi scandal, in which our outpost in Libya was left unsecured and was attacked on the 9-11 anniversary in 2012. This administration lied about what led to the attack, and has prevented survivors from telling their stories.

Accountability: nearly zero. Four dead Americans, no suspects in custody, and minimal upbraiding of State Department staff – with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton actually saying what led to the attack doesn’t matter at this point.

• For expediency, we’ll list three distinct scandals here: Justice Department spying on the news media; National Security Agency spying on millions of Americans; and the IRS targeting of conservative Americans for harassment and red tape.

Accountability: nearly zero.

On that last item: An administration official at the center of the IRS scandal, liberal political hatchet-woman Lois Lerner, is now being allowed to ride off into the sunset of retirement, after being neck-deep in the scandal – and after months of “paid leave,” which most of us recognize as compulsory vacation time.

Are we supposed to be impressed with her exit? Is it going to be billed as some kind of accountability for the administration’s use of the most feared agency of government to burden and debilitate its political foes? Is this supposed to end the matter?

This is something straight
out of the Eastern European
political handbook, except that the IRS didn’t actually poison the administration’s enemies; they did the bureaucratic equivalent.

We frankly find Ms. Lois Lerner to be one of the most despicable, reprehensible figures in American politics in quite some time – her standing only made worse by her arrogant refusal to come clean to Congress.

Have you no sense of decency, madam? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?

When elected officials and their minions are allowed to use the imposing, tax-paid forces of federal agencies to punish people for their beliefs, then truly the America of our predecessors is no longer.

Paid leave and sun-soaked retirements? This is accountability?

And where are the media? They can dog Lindsay Lohan and hand us Miley Cyrus ad nauseam, but they have no taste for scandals that are corrupting our system of self-governance? One media watchdog counted zero references to Lerner slinking away on the big three TV networks.

Oh, that’s right. Be handsome. Be a Democrat. Don’t be a non-Democrat.

Obama's Teleprompter Sometimes Misfires

Remember after Lois Lerner read her statement and then took the 5th, SC Republican Trey Gowdy said she couldn’t do that. Former prosecutor Goudy was absolutely correct. When she read that statement she was testifying. I would have loved to have seen Goudy turned loose on her with perjury charges held over her if she lied. We all know conservatives were disproportionately targeted.

As far as Benghazi, history won’t be kind to Obama, bless his heart. That was one of the worst handled American policy episodes in history. It was even worse than Syria, if you can believe that.

Operation Wide Receiver. Where was the outrage?
Thirteen attacks in US Diplomatic Missions between 1/21/2002 and 9/17/2008, not counting Iraq. Where was the outrage?
38 of 111 Tea Party/ conservative groups were tagged for review by the IRS, while 7 of 20 liberal groups were tagged for additional monotoring according to an analysis of Republican staff of the House Ways and Means Committee. This was out of a total of 298 groups, 248 conservative, 29 liberal, and 21 neither. They just blew this "conspiracy" out of the water with their own press release. Do the math. Liberal groups actually had a slightly higher percentage of those being checked on further, 35%.Where was the outrage?

NSA spying on citizens and having all government bureaus intertwined? Definitely not necessarily a good idea. How could Obama have come up with such a plan? He didnt. Check "Main Core" and Executive Order 12333. Where was the outrage?

Are some folks really slow? WIDE RECIEVER WAS ENDED BECAUSE IT DIDN'T WORK! THAT IS WHERE ANY SIMIARITY ENDS! WIDE RECIEVER WAS COORDINATED WITH THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT, WEAPONS FROM WIDE RECEIVER ACTUALLY HAD TRACKING DEVICES IN THEM. Fast and Furious was done with out the Mexican Government knowing, there was no effort to track the weapons in Fast and Furious. Over 2,000 weapons were ILLEGALLY smuggled into Mexico under Fast and Furious, Wide Reciever was coordinated with the Mexican government and Mexican agents, it stopped at 600 weapons because it didn't work! The attorney general under Bush did not get executive privilege to keep from testifying before Congress. Please print this so next time you want to compare the two programs!!!! I

Wow, bod thanks for the info.

Wow, bod thanks for the info. So Lerner lied to Congress when she admitted tea party groups were being picked on. Now they will have to prosecute her. Sure is odd that the executive branch seems to be evasive rather than transparent, at least the House is pursuing that. Wow wouldn't it be weird they get busted for lying and covering up a non-existent crime-so end up committing a crime because of their paranoia. Just like Watergatewas was a crime of paranoia.

There as wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth, garments were torn and the apocalypse was upon us when it was revealed that Bush monitored just INCOMING CALLS FROM SPECIFIC FOREIGN COUNTRIES WITH TIES TO TERRORISM. Hardly a shrug of the shoulders with the revelation that the NSA monitors almost all communications, has violated the FISA court rulings and NSA agents have actually monitored communications of love interests!

GaCopper head, Just a little historical note! All the "torture " supposedly committed by Bush was discussed and approved of by confess and the approval was bipartisan, even San Fran Nan "you got to pass it to find out what's in it Pelosi approved the enhanced interrogation! Now Rendition, where captives are sent to countries that actually TORTURE people in barbaric ways, is still an option for Obama!

a stolen election

the ruin of the best health care system in the world
the continuing deterioration of our education system
the end of responsible journalism
a deficit that can't be paid by those currently alive
these are the real scandals
"...the longer an empire is in existence, the more time the successfully sinister have to find ways to subvert the system and insert themselves into positions of power."

oh, and GAcopphed, you can't be serious
Iran-Contra, the most benevolent scandal in history
and the newspapers were all over it, day after day
who benefitted? Not Reagan... it was a scandal worthy of Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin
Bush responsible for Abu Ghraib?
hmmm... the female head of the prison system over there certainly has responsibility
don't hear about her much, though
even though there was wall-to-wall coverage in the newspapers
they were all over it, day after day
Watergate? hmmm... wonder why newspapers didn't cover that?
maybe i'll look it up

Benghazi is probably another paranoid cover up because of a fear of scandal-so they commit a crime over a non-criminal event. I never noted how much Obama is like Nixon being all paranoid- no wonder he plays so much golf the stress is getting to him.

Tea Party groups that are
Unpublished

Tea Party groups that are 100% political try to weasel their way into a category that specifically states the majority of your activity can't be political and that's targeting?. No, that's lying and tax fraud. Make them disclose their donor lists and give up their tax free status. A few hundred trials would be in order as well. Has Jenny Beth siphoned enough from the Tea Party Patriots sucker donors to pay her $500,000 she owed the IRS yet?. Why could they possibly be under a little more scrutiny. JBM who owes them a cool half mil. Dick Armey and pay for play scandal with Freedomworks setting up and funding more Tea Parties. Why on earh would the IRS think all of these political players and IRS deadbeats might have ulterior motives in setting up "social wefare organizations" that suddenly, right off the bat have millions and millions of dollars pouring in? There's no way anything looked fishy there. Never mind that they were double checking liberal groups at the same rate even though the number of their groups didn't skyrocket exponentially overnight. It's called doing their job and the only scandal is that they didn't call them on their scams and deny their applications.

But the IRS stopped most of these illegal action groups from getting tax-exemption. now they need to get all the illegal progressive groups and strip them of their status. We have to stop this criminal activity that certain progressive groups have enjoyed for years. Further they need to be prosecuted for fraud as Bod suggests.

GACop and Bod do you read

your history through one of those distortion mirrors at the fair?
the IRS targeted conservative groups... a proven fact
Reagan had a DEMOCRATIC congress...
DEMOCRATS always, ALWAYS, raise taxes
because their government must be fed
Reagan also LOWERED taxes in spite of congress... a huge reduction in taxes
and the Iranians waited till Reagan took office because they fear power in the hands of those willing to use it...
and the rest? the world outside our own comfort zone just isn't always a nice place. Some Presidents deal with it. Some get Russia to bail them out.
32nd in the world for medical care?
not if, by world, you mean Earth.
and humans.
the people you so easily believe have some unusual categories
that have absolutely nothing to do with medical care
you should look it up
because bewilderment is so easy to cure
with the truth
i suppose all those heart transplants in Ecuador and Montenegro may have you fooled
of course, if you're not able to see other points of view...
then you must be a modern Democrat
the most racist political group America is willing to endure
exploiting our President's pseudo-blackness for their own political gain

Gacopperhead. Once again,

Gacopperhead. Once again, statistical analysis of health care is very misleadingto say the least. Two examples. Infant mortality rates, in the US if a child is born and sucks air with a heart beat it is termed a live birth. In other countries a child has to live so many days. Babies born with defects incompatable with are not live births etc. Life expectance is a other issue. Because we have so many utes (ie young men who could be Obama's son if he had some) that do stupid garbage like gang bang, play the polar bear game or other activities that get them killed it reduces the over all life expectancy rate and gives us bad numbers on juvenile statistcs. Take those two factors out and we look very good! I don't know what this has to do with Obama's scandal ridden administration but there is the truth about health care statistics! Oh, did I mention it seems the IRS can't account for $600 million in Obama care funds? Gee if they weren't so busy targeting tea party folks maybe they could keep the same type of books they expect us to!! BWAHAHAHAHA

Why is there no outrage?...

....Easy.
Because 90% of national journalists self-identify as either liberal or democrat...Duh!..

I submit that even if two of the myriad of current scandals happened during an administration with an "R" beside it the press would be apoplectic with rage, thereby ginning up the rage of the "dumb-masses"....

For anyone on the left OR right to deny this fact, is to be delusional...

The Iranians feared Reagan?
Unpublished

The Iranians feared Reagan? Were they scared he was overcharging them for the anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles he was selling them? He was negotiating with terrorists, Hezbollah, in an arms for hostage deal, then broke US law by using the illegally obtained funds to break international law and fund terrorists in an attempted overthrow of the freely elected government of a sovereign nation, including mining its ports and arming, financing, and training militarily and paramilitary groups that conducted murder, rape, fortune, and kidnapping, and also violated the sovereignty of adjacent nations. Just a slight mess up. Isn't it great that Columbia County names the road for its government complex after this guy. "What did he do mommy?" "He sold some weapons for hostages and sent the money to a bunch of guys who raped and murdered nuns. This was against the law but he wanted to overthrow a democratically elected government. He's our hero."
