Push the envelope back

When will public stand up to culture's ceaseless vulgarity?

  • Follow Editorials

Miley Cyrus can frankly do whatever she wants with her own reputation. Sadly, she has. No amount of clean living will ever wipe away the disgusting images she created while blatantly simulating sex acts on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards this past week.

Even in a “gentlemen’s club,” the last place you’ll ever find a true gentleman, the Disney star’s tongue-swaying, bent-over, foam-finger-waving porn act would’ve been simply gross and low-class.

But on national television, even on teen-oriented MTV, it was a new low for Western society. If radical Muslims keep files, they’ve got one on why they hate the West, and Miley Cyrus is now their pin-up gal.

You may think it’s a non-issue, and we certainly tried to ignore it ourselves. But it and impending military action in the Mideast were the talk of the nation all last week. It was Syria and Cyrus. A foreign crisis and a domestic disaster.

The reason it’s important is twofold:

First, it’s a further hypersexualization of young girls, and don’t think for a minute there weren’t plenty tuned in. Seeing it on a national network, even a routinely crass cable outlet, many girls will take it as an endorsement or normalization of aberrant behavior – in public.

Second, it’s yet another landmark in the daily degradation of our corroding culture. With each new low, the entertainment industry, which sees you all as impossibly uptight anyway, must find a new way to shock and titillate. Cyrus has already mainstreamed “twerking.” We just can’t wait for the next big thing.

The kind of lewdness that used to be confined to the privacy of peepshows and the seamy back alleys of civilization is now streaming live not just into living rooms but into young malleable minds, compliments of the likes of Cyrus.

Time was, when parents would never have allowed such a thing, much less approve of it – but Cyrus’ singer-father Billy Ray happily sanctioned his daughter’s salaciousness, essentially passing out the dollar bills.

You can say all you want that no one has to watch this toxic trash, but the truth is many do – and they’re taking the rest of us with them, whether we watch or not. They’re debasing the currency of culture and, as with the devaluing of the dollar, the whole of society suffers.

They’re also tempting fate. Never before in history has so much of a nation’s cohort been at such risk of being ill-bred.

They keep pushing the envelope. When are we going to push back?

So who on the ACES drew the unfortunate assignment to watch the MTV award show and then report back on how immoral it was?
A young performer wants to shed her Disney princess image and does a raunchy dance on TV. It is not the end of the world. When Miley matures she will probably regret it. It was raunchy and in poor taste, but the reaction is overboard IMO.

There is a larger problem.

Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke and numerous others are legacy performers, uninteresting in their own right as artists, yet propped up by big industry and marketed to those with narrow horizons. This county is very rich with genuine talent, and if you in the media really want to turn things around, then you should try harder to notice and promote real art, whenever and wherever you can find it.

trashy people doing trashy things

Godless people have no limit on what sin they will promote, perform or agree with to please their leader. Sad but never unexpected. People are always trying to fill the void inside that only God can fill and make enough noise or alter than mind enough to not hear His voice calling them to a better way.

Let's Get Real

I'm more worried about the preponderance of violence in this culture, than some music awards performance that has no impact on anyone's life, apart from Miley's.

The gun-loving, violent culture of America, where murders and violent assaults occur every minute of every day, is an issue that takes precedence over young adults "twerking". The formation of a police-state in our society, prisons-for-profit, the incarceration of two million Americans (more than any other country on the planet), and harsh sentences for non-violent crimes is a reflection of the deficit of humane acts in this country.

Who gives a flip about some music awards show, when children are being gunned down in the streets?

This is the problem. Misplaced priorities. It's much easier to bang the drums of some morality code, worried about titillating imagery, condemning those who dare think that sexuality is no big deal (like citizens do in so many other countries of the world), than to tackle the real problems of the mistreatment of human beings and the continuing epidemic of violent behavior in our streets and through our government entities.

We are a hair's length from going to war in yet another country - where impoverished innocent people will suffer being maimed and wounded and killed in the name of "security".

Yet, ACES is worried about Miley Cyrus. What a joke.

I was not offended

I watched MTV once, some years back. It included some cartoon characters called (if I remember properly) Beavis and Butthead. I found it so sorry that I never watched it again, and so had no chance to be offended by the action under discussion.

It is not a problem for me. Why should I watch something that I expect to be rubbish, and then complain because it is rubbish?

This whole subject is a waste of time.

You're a funny guy!

You take AC to task for commenting on that which is the talk of the town. Then you break-dance into a rant about guns. Of course you do so without a shred of evidence concerning legal gun owners, but hey, who am I to nit pick facts?

“Misplaced priorities?” “Worried about titillating imagery?”, etc., etc.?

What amazes me, is people like you who see no correlation.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? You see no correlation between the uplifting of sewage in our culture, and how our children act? Children that will soon grow into adults?

You rant and rave about perceived wrongs and injustices, yet have no problem with polluting our youth, our future?

Get real man!

To paraphrase what one

To paraphrase what one reviewer said. ""t was an award show for music videos, on the channel that started music videos, that doesn't show music videos.?" Like it or not, Miley is not Hannah Montana. She is now a 20 year old woman, not some make believe Disney princess. She may even, gasp, get pregnant one day. Behavior like this becomes a big deal and perpetuates only when we let it. We're it not for the Chronicle, news, and other media, telling us how bad it was, most of us never would have heard of it. MTV left music I like and my style of entertainment behind long ago. I do, however, have these magic buttons on my remote that change channels and even turn the television off if I choose.

Welcome to Cable TV

As fading Stars and MTV fades from prominence expect to see greater attempts to recapture the limelight with more increasing over the top stunts.

For those of you that are in to this type of scenery.
An Corp. IT buddy told me Youtube is/was pulling down the Audience taken videos from the rear view as quickly as they were posted.

The shame is 12-17 y/o's are eating this up and a fading star with no shame for attention is milking it to the fullest.

As I've pointed out many times on other forums, this young woman did not ab lib this "performance." Someone, presumably older than this 20-year-old, choreographed the routine, the show's director approved it, along with producers, etc. To expect this young woman to show more discretion than the others involved (including the older Thicke) may not be totally within the realm of possibility, but is somewhat unfair, but he'll be just fine and rake in more money. The young people mentioned in the editorial are not automatons and will not en masse behave like the youth in Reefer Madness. Miley is less to blame than the powers-that-be who produced the show and the network that allowed it...

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

Reading some of these comments grieves my heart more than the acts of one very foolish and deceived young woman.

"For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools." Romans 1:22-23

When we give any understanding or make excuses for this kind of behavior, we sin. If you do not abhor evil, then you have no fear of God. This makes you a tremendous fool.

"Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness;
Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes,
And prudent in their own sight!" Isaiah 5:20-21

"There is no fear of God before his eyes.
For he flatters himself in his own eyes...
He does not abhor evil." Psalm 36:1-2, 4

God loves us and has offered salvation to all, but His own Word says that there comes a time when He gives up on us and hands us over to our own sinful desires and deprivation.

Inappropriate sexual desires and actions will be the downfall of many. Those who chase after the next sexual thrill will never have any personal inner peace on this earth, their lust will never be satisfied and they will not inherit the Kingdom of God. But those who choose the Lord and enjoy His gift of appropriate sexual relations will have it all.

Every gift from the Lord has the propensity for both good and evil.

Just another no talent skank.

Just another no talent skank. We've got a lot of young women nowadays with nothing else to offer but skank. They are not talented enough to DO anything and not educated enough to be interesting so they only thing they have left is to put on their skank. Well, I guess they do have what it takes to be interesting to the young boys....for about 15 minutes. You have to make the most out of what you've got, and from what I see when I walk the Mall, Miley ain't the only one doing it.

“As a "nit pick" fact, legal gun owners commit criminal crimes, too.”

Well of course they do. Did anyone claim otherwise? Of course not. Now, if you'd like to discuss crime rates of various groups, that'd be a horse of another color. I doubt you want to go there.

@dahreese -
“This couldn't be better said; and it flies over the heads of the very people who need to think deeply about it before they reply”

It appears some have this tendency to believe most others are like themselves. Regardless of what you may believe, I think most commentators on this site are capable of contemplating more than one serious issue at a time. As a matter of fact, I'd say most are capable of concerning themselves with multiple issues. Granted some may be more important than others. Of course “importance” tends to be subjective. Some would say the purposeful indoctrination of a pliable youth is fairly “important”.

You never know what a particular young person may grow up to become. Why a charismatic, but shallow youth could grow into a position of great power, inserting a whole country into war just to save face...you just never know!

"Why a charismatic, but shallow youth could grow into a position of great power, inserting a whole country into war just to save face...you just never know!"

Such a shallow youth led this country into attacking Iraq and other shallow youths followed him and defend him to this day.

And I am afraid more shallow youths are getting their jollies at the thought that the U.S. must/will attack Syria, although frankly it's none of this country's business.

Frankly, that's a Middle East problem and the Middle East ought to be left alone to solve it.
------------------------------------------------
"Well of course they do. Did anyone claim otherwise?"

The implication is there, yes.

Interestingly, there are 6 minus votes above denying that legal gun owners commit crimes.

(Either that or they see the name dahreese and automatically vote minus).

On this and other sites, it's a fact that the Jesus thumpers and those who think this country cannot, never has, never will, do anything wrong aren't going to change their minds no matter what.

Elementary school history and their childhood Sunday School still control them.

Does God get a kick of watching the "risk"?
