Deadly weeds

Callous disregard for human life is eroding civilized society's fabric

This editorial space could be filled with what the public doesn’t know about the shooting of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago.

Antonio Santiago smiles during his first Christmas in this December 2012 photo. Antonio was killed March 21, six weeks after his first birthday.

We don’t know if 18-year-old De’Marquise Elkins really shot a baby sitting in a stroller on a Brunswick, Ga., street. That’s what a trial beginning this week in Marietta is expected to reveal.

Other trials will answer other questions. How was Elkins’ 15-year-old friend involved in what has been described as a robbery gone wrong? Dominique Lang is expected to be a key witness.

Did Elkins’ sister and mother try to conceal the crime by trying to dispose of the purported murder weapon, as they’re accused of doing?

And what of the assertions from Elkin’s lead defense attorney – that gunshot residue was found on the hands of both the toddler’s parents, even though the child’s father reportedly wasn’t even at the scene of the shooting?

A pretrial motion from the defense has implied that someone shot the boy between the eyes, point-blank, to cash in on a life insurance policy.

The unfolding trial has much to reveal. What we can tell you is what it already has revealed about our society – a further sickening devaluation of human life.

Regardless of who killed Antonio or for what twisted motive, it is a morally broken culture that can spawn the kind of person who would stoop to taking the life of a defenseless child.

Do you need more examples of modern callousness? Can you stomach more examples?

We’ll leave you with just one: In Oklahoma, three boys ages 15, 16 and 17 are in custody in connection with the slaying Friday of 22-year-old Christopher Lane, an Australian attending college in America on a baseball scholarship.

Duncan, Okla., Police Chief Danny Ford said the 17-year-old has given a detailed confession.

“They saw Christopher go by, and one of them said: ‘There’s our target,’” Ford said. “The boy who has talked to us said: ‘We were bored and didn’t have anything to do, so we decided to kill somebody.’

“They followed him in the car to that area, shot him in the back and drove off,” Ford said.

If this account is true – that the kids “were bored and didn’t have anything to do” – how did their bent minds get to a point where an antidote to boredom involves slaying an innocent man?

A lack of morals. A lack of guidance. A lack of structure. A lack of attention. A lack of love.

Dare we say a lack of a strong family?

Talk about an antidote – that’s a proven cure right there for so many symptoms of a sick society: a strong, loving, traditional family.

Did those three teens have that? Did De’Marquise Elkins? Will the next teen facing a charge of murder? None of them are honor students or Eagle Scouts or altar boys, we’re willing to bet.

The seeds of family breakdown – sown over several decades in the soil of government-enabled poverty and moral decline – are sprouting around us every day, in the form of these kinds of deaths.

They’re like weeds – and they’re choking us.

I agree with all of this, BUT if we were to try and get involved in other peoples' "BUSINESS", this would probably make a bigger powder-keg than what we have now ! I believe THE MAJORITY of you conservatives KNOW what the problems are and KNOW how to fix them, BUT the law, nor individual freedoms are going to allow the fix !!

I KNOW this is yet another "SHOT" across the bow of liberals, BUT I see you mentioned "OVER SEVERAL DECADES". Couldn't the VERY negative events of the 1950's through now be a major contributing factor ??

Right to Bear Arms

“A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.”

You have to keep in mind, that Colonial America was a gun owning society. The intent of the amendment was to PRESERVE, not grant the right to bear arms. The amendment also emphasizes the need for a militia and is saying one of the things to promote the militia is the right of the people to bear arms. It did not mean you had to be in a militia to bear arms. That would have been so farfetched to frontier Americans they would have never have accepted such control of their guns.

The Rise and Fall folks. We

The Rise and Fall folks. We WERE civilized, now we are regressing. Some regress faster than others. Some apparently did not have that far to go. When things got bad in Rome, the government provided "games" at the Coliseum involving human slaughter to take people's minds off of their misery. Today, our government provides welfare that exceeds what a "civilized" working person can make. And the well fed, well housed, and well clothed are left to provide their own entertainment. Apparently when they get bored, they go shoot one of the "still civilized" ones.

In order to speed the process, some of the "still civilized" who refuse to see what is truly happening insist that we disarm ourselves and march peacefully to the Coliseum.....it's the civilized thing to do. I ain't going.

" You're blaming the government for this?"
Rhetor, we can thank the Great Society, liberals/progressives, democrats and black leaders for this. They have destroyed black families and damaged white families. As LBJ said when he got the civil rights act passed, “I’ll have those 'blacks' voting Democratic for the next 200 years”.

"The old saying "Guns don't kill people, people kill people", to this I will say, "Guns make it super easy for people to kill people". This is the way it is !"

Hands also make it easy to kill people; I've personally worked two murders where the person was choked to death!! Plus, it makes it really easy to pull the trigger when you have hands and fingers; let's chop them off!!

People tend to forget,

People tend to forget, Firearms are nothing but metal and plastic in most cases!! If you've got scrap metal lying around the house and a torch, you have the ability to CREATE a firearm!! I personally know two people who actually DO make their own firearms!!

So, you gather all the firearms from law abiding citizens; then the criminals will just make their own!! The FIREARM was invented and shall NEVER be GONE from our society!! This is common sense!!

P.S. You can also make a "Zip gun" (single shot firearm) from a ball point pen!!

Violence does not go down when guns are banded.

Look at the statistics from Canada, Great Britian, and Australia before and after the banning of guns and you will see violent crimes either went up or stayed the same. Robberies went up dramatically in GB since the thugs knew people were no long armed. In the other countries the deaths with clubs and the like went up so that the murder rate remained the same.

There are always thugs who want to take what others have and will not let anything stop them. I think there are some who are born that way. Then there are those whose environment creates a condition that puts them on the path of lawlessness and a lack of concern for others lives.

Want to read about the WEEDS? Read Matthew 13!!

Parable of the Tares!! The tares ARE the weeds mentioned in this article. They grow right along with the Wheat, but are worthless!! When the harvest comes; it says EXACTLY what will happen to them!!

Matthew 13 explains this world better than any man could; IF you understand the symbology, and the meaning of the roots!!

It is far too easy to obtain a gun. This is the common link in these stories. All-in-all, these few examples out of a very large nation do not represent the populace, nor do they represent a collapse of society...

Do you think WE WILL EVER get off of this merry-go-round of racism between caucacians, African-Americans, and Latinos ?? I am curious that none of these groups have prejudice toward Asians !! Is it perhaps most Asians tend to be very, very smart in math and science ?? Perhaps NOTHING to be prejudice about ??

You seem like a good guy; and I believe you are, but please stop listening to the lies of the HARD left!!

Do some research of your own. Next time a gun show is in town, go there and see how easy it is to buy a firearm!! Did you know that law enforcment agencies all throughout the United States, send undercover agents into these gun shows? Did you know some of them are posing as underage teens, to see if firearms will be sold to them?

This "Gun Show" rant from the left is nothing but a FALSE FRONT; used as a disguise!! All I'm saying is stop believing this junk!! Don't believe ME either; do your own research!!
