Deadly weeds

Callous disregard for human life is eroding civilized society's fabric

This editorial space could be filled with what the public doesn’t know about the shooting of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago.

Antonio Santiago smiles during his first Christmas in this December 2012 photo. Antonio was killed March 21, six weeks after his first birthday.

We don’t know if 18-year-old De’Marquise Elkins really shot a baby sitting in a stroller on a Brunswick, Ga., street. That’s what a trial beginning this week in Marietta is expected to reveal.

Other trials will answer other questions. How was Elkins’ 15-year-old friend involved in what has been described as a robbery gone wrong? Dominique Lang is expected to be a key witness.

Did Elkins’ sister and mother try to conceal the crime by trying to dispose of the purported murder weapon, as they’re accused of doing?

And what of the assertions from Elkin’s lead defense attorney – that gunshot residue was found on the hands of both the toddler’s parents, even though the child’s father reportedly wasn’t even at the scene of the shooting?

A pretrial motion from the defense has implied that someone shot the boy between the eyes, point-blank, to cash in on a life insurance policy.

The unfolding trial has much to reveal. What we can tell you is what it already has revealed about our society – a further sickening devaluation of human life.

Regardless of who killed Antonio or for what twisted motive, it is a morally broken culture that can spawn the kind of person who would stoop to taking the life of a defenseless child.

Do you need more examples of modern callousness? Can you stomach more examples?

We’ll leave you with just one: In Oklahoma, three boys ages 15, 16 and 17 are in custody in connection with the slaying Friday of 22-year-old Christopher Lane, an Australian attending college in America on a baseball scholarship.

Duncan, Okla., Police Chief Danny Ford said the 17-year-old has given a detailed confession.

“They saw Christopher go by, and one of them said: ‘There’s our target,’” Ford said. “The boy who has talked to us said: ‘We were bored and didn’t have anything to do, so we decided to kill somebody.’

“They followed him in the car to that area, shot him in the back and drove off,” Ford said.

If this account is true – that the kids “were bored and didn’t have anything to do” – how did their bent minds get to a point where an antidote to boredom involves slaying an innocent man?

A lack of morals. A lack of guidance. A lack of structure. A lack of attention. A lack of love.

Dare we say a lack of a strong family?

Talk about an antidote – that’s a proven cure right there for so many symptoms of a sick society: a strong, loving, traditional family.

Did those three teens have that? Did De’Marquise Elkins? Will the next teen facing a charge of murder? None of them are honor students or Eagle Scouts or altar boys, we’re willing to bet.

The seeds of family breakdown – sown over several decades in the soil of government-enabled poverty and moral decline – are sprouting around us every day, in the form of these kinds of deaths.

They’re like weeds – and they’re choking us.

I have a better antidote - get rid of the guns. Stop glorifying violence. Ban the NRA lobbyists from Congress.

"Getting Rid of Guns"

None of those people involved in the murders could legally carry a gun. So getting rid of guns only takes them from law abiding citizens.

spirit of death

Making abortion legal has brought in a spirit of death and it won't be confined to the killing unborn babies. You see it in the celebration of homosexual sin which also stops life. You may see it coming in medical care. Once allowed into society there is no stopping it if society is ran by Godless people. This has been satan's method from the beginning. He always tells people they are smarter than God and many of you think that right now. You can stop it in your family by having a relationship with Christ and not voting for people who promote it. All the answers are in the spiritual realm. Fix your spiritual side and the natural side will change. Plant a different seed and get a new crop.

give me a break

A terrible crime and a terrible tragedy. All my sympathy for the family. You're blaming the government for this? Ideology trumps reality, it would seem.

The government is a co

The government is a co culprit. The government has aided family break down, increased poverty, and created a sub culture of welfare that allows people to sit around with nothing but entertainment to occupy time. When we get bored we demand entertainment, if we don't get entertainment we create it. If shooting some one seems entertaining to why not? 24/7 reality shows is what life is about. The statistics on single parent families demonstrate beyond a doubt this isn't working.

Sadly, there have always been tragedies like this.

Because evil exists, it's real, and it has nothing to do with the government.

There are so-called human beings that are depraved sociopaths, and there always will be.

Specsta. Tell us how to get rid of the guns? Make them illegal? How would that have stopped those who weren't allowed to have them in the first place? Unfortunately we live in the real world.

I see Specsta doesn't believe in equal protection under the law either.....just ban those you don't agree with. Keep showing your true colors.

Question Corgimom?

Do you believe that all those that commit these violent crimes are wired to commit them from the day they popped into this world?

I 2nd HA and Riverman's comments!!

How is a law banning guns; going to stop CRIMINALS who don't obey laws to begin with? It WON'T!!!

It's already illegal for persons under 18 to possess firearms; so do you think they will abide by your NEW laws? Absolutely pathetic mindset, lacking ANY rational logic!!

"and it has nothing to do with the government."

New York Welfare Recipients Paid More Than Teachers

According to a newly-released study, a New York mother of two is eligible for in excess of $38,000 in annual welfare benefits – more than the starting salary of a New York entry-level school teacher.

Think that’s bad? In Hawaii, that same mother would receive $60,590 per year.

The study, conducted by the CATO Institute, found that in addition to New York and Hawaii, welfare pays better than work in many states. While Hawaii tops the list at $60,590, Idaho brings up the rear at $11,150, as reported by Breitbart. [I assume the beaches aren't as nice in Idaho.]

Indeed, the CATO study claims:

In 11 states, welfare pays more than the average pre-tax first-year salary for a teacher. In 39 states, it pays more than the starting wage for a secretary. And, in the 3 most generous states, a person on welfare can take home more money than an entry-level computer programmer.

The study found that 33 states and the District of Columbia offer welfare benefits that pay recipients more than they would earn from an $8-an-hour job. Twelve states and the District of Columbia offer welfare packages that pay better than does a $15-an-hour job.

Add in Obama’s suspension of welfare-to-work requirements, and life on welfare can be a pretty good gig these days, as evidenced by the now somewhat infamous Cali surf bum.

“There is no evidence that people on welfare are lazy,” writes CATO senior fellow Michael Tanner. “But they’re also not stupid. If you pay them more not to work than they can earn by working, many will choose not to work.”

Therein lies the quintessential problem with the nanny state. Since LBJ declared “war on poverty,” U.S. taxpayers have spent over $15 trillion on anti-poverty programs – a total nearly equal to the national debt. And where has it gotten us? Look around. Start with the surf bum.

You will NEVER get rid of

You will NEVER get rid of ALLS guns during this lifetime!! The ONLY way to create TRUE peace is to DESTROY those who would commit such atrocities. We should do so with those who actually COMMIT these atrocties, but there is no way for us to predict WHO WILL commit them in the future. But they will be destroyed ONE DAY!! It IS GOING TO HAPPEN!!

This article is SPOT ON!!!

If I would have come home, with a pistol; telling my mother I shot someone, she would have called law enforcement herself. Now, this probably would have occured after she knocked me unconscious on the floor!!!

But, the actual REALITY IS; this would have NEVER happened in the first place, because my mother taught me honor, integrity, decency, morals, discipline and most importantly; she taught me about GOD!!! I PROMISE YOU, these people's parents NEVER taught them any of the above!!!

But this isn't about GUNS and you and I both know it!! It's about a falling away from God!! This IS the society we are dealing with!! Yes, atrocities have always happened; but cold, calculated, senseless killings are happening more and more!! There has always been violence, but we are reaching a new level!!

Specsta posted:

You have to get rid of the Constitution first. How do you propose we do that?

The procedure the Obama regime seems to be following is just to ignore the Constitution. After a few more years and a few more judicial appointments of like-minded socialists, it just might work.

Yes,

"There has always been violence, but we are reaching a new level!!"

Back in my time, there was crimes of atrocities' but they were "rare" and far from being like those today.

We have let our society get to the point of not "Fearing Their Actions".
We truly need to put back into the minds of humans what will really happen to them when they commit crimes against humanity.

The Electric Chair or lethal Injection no longer a threaten issue in those minds. Life in prison sure doesn't solve it.

Punishment must go back to the "public square" where individual viewing and news media is made possible.

I can guarantee you that horrendous crimes would fall to almost a non-existence.

Also, A fear of God also need to be instilled back into our society.

We also set them in prison for 20 years before administering the death penalty!! Punishment should be administered immediately following any appeal denial!! Days afterward, not even weeks!! Get RID OF THEM, and put them in God's hands; who KNOWS them!!

The 2nd amendment

The militia shall have the right to keep and bare arms. Could gun deaths be lowered drastically IF the militia would ONLY have guns ? The old saying "Guns don't kill people, people kill people", to this I will say, "Guns make it super easy for people to kill people". This is the way it is !

I Speak Of Those That Are "Beyond A Reasonable Doubt Offense"

If 20 people physically see a robber come into a store and shoot to death the casher. There is no doubt that he is Guilty.

Like at the mindset being presented in this case....Look at the Fort Hook shooting.....look at so many and see the end results.

I will whole-heartedly agree with you IF the suspect can absolutely; without a doubt; be tied to the crime. Preferably DNA evidence.

I would get that TSD support for my 07:38 because those type of individuals are the one's that are causing and allowing the criminal society we have today. They are happy to live in the world they live in.

Our Judicial system is the best in the world but is outdated to handle our growing needs.

A pressure cooker, knife, bow

A pressure cooker, knife, bow and arrow, rope, or baseball bat make it super easy to kill some one. Geez the insight of some folks. If we could just get rid of these then crime would stop. Golly. Violence is the enemy not a choice of weapons-of which you don't need any and could use your hands too. I don't see violent video games being pulled-which Sandy Hooks with an autistic person watching violent videos was a witch's brew. Studies indicate video games may contribute to ADD and autism, and definitely links to violence. A study indicates individuals lose touch with reality being consumed by the games-living in an alternate reality. Duh, think there maybe a problem???
