What about the rest of us?

Congress skips out on Obamacare - and its constituents

  • Follow Editorials

Some worry that our country is lurching toward socialism or even communism.

But maybe feudalism should be a concern too.

The country’s ruling elite, it appears, have put themselves above the American people once again like so many feudal lords – and in perhaps the most astonishingly arrogant and dismissive way ever: by exempting themselves from the “Affordable Care Act” that most of us will be subjects to.

Um, we meant “subject” to. Slip of the keyboard.

“ObamaCare for thee, little peons, but not for the majestic aristocracy of Congress and their loyal courtiers!” writes columnist John Hayward.

“To adapt H.L. Mencken,” adds The Wall Street Journal, “nobody ever went broke underestimating the cynicism and self-dealing of the American political class. Witness their ad-libbed decision, at the 11th hour and on the basis of no legal authority, to create a special exemption for themselves from the ObamaCare health coverage that everybody else is mandated to buy.”

Indeed, with the spotlight squarely on Congress during its Obamacare debates, lawmakers in 2009 were forced to impose Obamacare on themselves and their staffs while imposing it on the rest of us. But this week, with Americans’ attention turned elsewhere, the Obama administration gave a frantic Congress a waiver from Obamacare.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi was said to be worried about the “collateral damage” that forcing Obamacare on Congress would’ve had. Congressional staff, you see, might have found the law’s consequences so onerous that they might have left Capitol Hill.

Without the waiver, members of Congress and their staff could each face stunning increases in their health-care premiums. The waiver means they will still receive generous federal health care subsidies the rest of us do not.

Question: If they worry that Obamacare will hurt members of Congress that much, what about the rest of us?

A report this past week said health insurance premiums across the country could rise 100 percent to 400 percent because of Obamacare.

The federal law is leading to other apparently unintended consequences, including cuts in workers’ hours and income.

The Chronicle received an email this past week from a college instructor who said his employer was cutting back on adjunct instructors’ hours to avoid massive fines under Obamacare. The change, the instructor told us, will cost him nearly $16,000 a year.

It will also obviously make him less available for teaching, meaning a net loss in education.

In truth, we have only seen the tip of the Obamacare iceberg and all the damage it will work.

Yet, our feudal lords in Washington are holding themselves harmless above it all.

In fact, things may only get better for them: The Wall Street Journal notes that current federal subsidies cover 75 percent of congressional health care premiums; but premiums under the Obamacare exchanges may be higher – so the cost to cover 75 percent of the premiums may be higher than they are now.

“In any case,” the Journal writes, “the carve-out for Congress creates a two-tier exchange system, one for the great unwashed and another for the politically connected.”

How much more are we vassals expected to swallow?

"I would bet 2 to 1 that corgi has never run a business. She is just sticking up for the lying racist commie in the WH and his union buddies."

I wonder if all conservatives that feel this way about Obama would leave the country, how harmonious would the race and political feelings be in this country ?? You have got to give a little, just like a building in an earthquake.

Once again, another excellent editorial

This exemption maybe the most egregious example of a ruling class mentality I have ever seen. Do you remember what the "reason" was? They said they were worried about brain drain if the staffers were not exempted. If those folks we have now are example of "brains'' and are the best we have, I'd hate to think of what would happen if we had some of us less-smart folks running the governments.

One of the arguments put forth about term limits is the elected officials would be so ignorant because of lack of experience that the government would be run by the staffers who are the ones who really know how things are done.

Even Senators are afraid of the imperialism of obama as shown by Senator Rubio's comment yesterday that if the House does not pass the Senate's version of immigration reform, obama will do it by executive order and we will not get some of the "benefits'' of the senate's bill. Now that is how far we have collapsed as a representative republic...and we don't understand how Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin, and Mao came into power? Think of how many "followers" would reelect obama if they could because of what he could do for them in taking from "The Man" and giving it to them because "it's their time."

Keep drink the Obama cool-aid and when it crashes and burns you can blame Bush. If Obamacare can not be stopped we will have a "single payer system within 8 years. Do you not believe the very words of your messiah Obama or Harry Reid and Pelosi. They have each admitted the real goal is a single payer system.

If all the conservatives left the country there would be no one left to actually do the work. America would look like Zimbabwe in very short order as you all would have nothing to do but wait at the mail box for a government check that never arrives.

Actor Jamie Foxx apparently thinks Obama is the Messiah of God, urging audience members to “Give honor to God and our Lord and Savior Barak Obama!”

Oprah and her followers in the video directly below apparently also think Obama is “the One”…

Can we say BRAINWASHED...it has happened.

I have never ADORED any President!

Congress is the only group

Congress is the only group mandated to join the exchanges- no, ifs, and,or,buts. So they worry about the impact on staffers, which are the same concerns of most businesses.

I got a call yesterday

The man sounded foreign, but he advised me to call my reps - Bill Jackson to tell him I did not approve of the bill that the state of Ga secretly passed allowing for only one insurance provider for everyone - anyone know if that's true and if it is what does that mean?

Your lack of knowledge never ceases to amaze me. Have you ever done any research on the big businesses that are huge donors to the Democrats. I suggest you start with the companies that benefitted from the Wall Street bailout. It is pure ignorance to think that big business goes hand in hand with the Republican party.

So, you believe that as an American I should be FORCED to purchase something I do not want to purchase. If I decide I want to pay cash for my health services I should still be required to purchase a policy approved by Obama. What else might you force me to purchase?

Does Congress think we're stupid?

Just remember which members of Congress are responsible for opting out of ObamaCare and send them packing. I would think the American people would be absolutely outraged at their despicable move and

DEMAND they be forced to take their health care lumps right along with the rest of us. I am absolutely stunned that they think they are above the laws they enact.
Vote the bums out!
The problem is we keep electing the same bums over and over again. Doesn't anyone care?

I have already vented my

I have already vented my spleen on the R&Rs about this topic. My only question is why the masses of gutless peons have not grabbed their weapons and built bonfires in the streets in protest of this law breaking action by the tyrants and ruling class aristocracy.

Regardless of those who try to defend this and tell you that Congress is not exempt because they are covered by group insurance, THAT IS NOT TRUE. They have been exempted from their policies having to provide the things that will drive YOUR premiums up. And they have been exempted from having to pay the "Cadillac" tax on their group policies. Their COSTS will remain stable and they will have EXCELLENT health care insurance. You WILL NOT and your COSTS ARE GOING UP. THEY ARE EXEMPT....THEY...THEY....THE ONES WHO FORCED THIS DOWN YOUR THROATS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AND THEIR GLORIOUS DICTATOR OBAMA. YOU KNOW...OBMAM....THE DICTATOR WHO SIGNED THE LAW THAT SAID THAT CONGRESS COULD NOT EXEMPT THEMSELVES.

You take it in the shorts and THEY maintain the status quo......like they promised that you could.....BUT YOU CANNOT AND THEY CAN.

It's time to burn it down and start again. I've had it with dictators and tyrants. There is no hope for America if you take this sitting down. You are whipped puppies with your tails between your legs....no...hell, you are not even that good. Even a whipped dog will eventually bite you if you keep messing with them.

The Maddow blog says the

The Maddow blog says the exemption is a dodge because Rep Grassely forced the Congressional mandate-the Dems called the bluff. So with absolute impunity congress will be forced off the govt program and into the exchanges. The problem is congress didn't create a mechanism to force them out-Obama offered a band-aid solution. This just demonstrates our govt incompetence to address this task. Always only excuses from Obama- Bush's fault,no computer software-please the level of incompetence is staggering. And progressives just want more incompetence and a staggering record of failures. Both rep an dem approved of ending the fed program and mandate obamacare exchanges-just likely they won't do it just like not paying their taxes. The issue was about past contributions which should be preserved .

So congress will be forced

So congress will be forced into the exchanges but this action just assures that the employee will only be paying a third and the fed the rest-just like the current federal employee health benefit program. We will still be footing the bill for most of their healthcare- without this action fed employees would be responsible for all the cost. Wow just like us.

I see a human, not a Messiah, that probably has more on his presidential plate that his own administration put there AND THE BUSH administration put there !!
