Media shouldn't cover for president's miscues

  • Follow Editorials

Historian Michael Beschloss was apparently going on and on to radio host Don Imus about the president’s IQ.

But when Imus asked what the president’s IQ was, Beschloss had to admit he had no idea.

It doesn’t matter. Barack Obama is the most brilliant man ever to seek the presidency. At least that’s the media’s story, and they’re sticking to it.

Even to the point of seemingly covering up his verbal embarrassments.

As summarized by columnist Jack Kelly, here are some of Mr. Obama’s most glaring gaffes: “there are 57 states; Canada has a president; ‘Austrian’ is a language; America is ‘20 centuries’ old; Arabic is spoken in Afghanistan. He’s called the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) the Maldives, and declared it would be ‘unprecedented’ for the Supreme Court to invalidate a law passed by Congress.”

But that’s ancient history. You need only go back a few days to find more.

Appearing on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno this week, Mr. Obama said we’ve got to “deepen our ports all along the Gulf – places like Charleston, S.C., or Savannah, Ga., or Jacksonville, Fla.”

Of course, those fairly well-known great American cities are on the Eastern Seaboard, not the Gulf of Mexico.

Mr. Obama also made the odd claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin was once head of the infamous KGB, giving Putin a dramatic retroactive promotion. He never led the agency.

You would think a president of the United States would be more familiar with the résumé of the leader of America’s most bitter rival.

Yet, the former mainstream media have not only largely ignored the blunders, they’ve even gone so far as to cover them up: As columnist Michelle Malkin reported, when others did not, the Associated Press story actually fixed the president’s gulf quote for him – adding this parenthetical to make his elementary geography goof make sense: According to the AP’s original story, Obama called for us to “deepen our ports all along the Gulf — (and in) places like Charleston, S.C., or Savannah, Ga., or Jacksonville, Fla.”

The reporter added his own words to make the president’s quote make more sense – a monumental transgression of traditional journalistic ethics.

And can you imagine a journalist covering tracks like that for a Republican?

Of course not. For a Republican president or vice president or vice presidential candidate, the media would’ve celebrated and repeated the honey boo-boo ad nauseum.

Even to the point of fiction: They managed to convince many voters that Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from her house.

We wouldn’t impugn the president’s intelligence. Everyone in the public eye makes boneheaded mistakes, particularly in this day and age when cameras and microphones are ubiquitous.

But neither should the media ignore, gloss over and even correct a politician’s miscues – especially in what may be an attempt to salvage a narrative that he is, as Malkin’s blog sardonically notes, “the Smartest President Evah™.”

Garbled Syntax

He didn't have a teleprompter, what did you expect? Heh. You are right that the media gives him breaks while slamming conservatives. I love Michelle Malkin and the Chronicle editorials, but, seriously, I believe Obama knows Charleston, Savannah and J-ville are on the east coast. I buy the pause before he stated the cities as meaning he was moving onto another area. The “and in” was understood. After all the deepening of those harbors has been in the news and everyone knows where they are.

The president who probably made more mistakes than anyone speaking was Ike. The press would excuse him, saying his syntax was garbled. In those days presidents didn’t go on talk shows to smoke and joke with comedians. There’s something to that. It keeps the prestige of the office intact and keeps the press from dissecting every line.

From the mouths (or

From the mouths (or computers) that almost daily run an attack on the President. Do you still get feeds of talking points from right wing think tanks for editorials like back in the plagiarizing days of Phil Kent or do you guys come up with this stuff on your own now? Does the boss man tell you to ignore actual news events that occur all around the world and to constantly print this elementary school level of whining drivel? It is humorous that you would care about Anthony Weiner from New York enough to devote an editorial to him in recent days. Without a doubt it's solely because he's a Democrat. You manage to bring up Clinton and a British Sec. of War, yet somehow couldn't think of "the comeback kid", "Mr. Argentina" himself, Mark Sanford, who just happens to have an (R) behind his name and was returned to Congress by our good Christian conservative neighbors in South Carolina who'd elect Satan (R) over Jesus (D), and even couldn't come up with sitting Sen. David Vitter who had a little prostitution problem, again with that magical (R). For you to talk about "traditional journalistic ethics" is laughable. Blatantly biased is the best you could this call paper. Yellow journalism is the most accurate.

Silly games by the right

Silly games by the right wing. Obama was referring to primaries and caucuses and said "states". As they say "it" happens. If anyone has never mixed up words or gotten tongue tied, cast the first stone. They make whole tv shows over that kind of stuff. This childish editorial should have stayed in 5th grade and never seen the light of a day in a real newspaper. Oh, wait. It still hasn't.

Well Obama, a Senator at the time from Illinois, said "of course Clinton got more votes in Kentucky, Kentucky is closer to Arkansas! " Dan Quail's spelling of potato became a major issue. There are many other examples where the press went out of thier way to impugn the intelligence of or derail the campaign of a conservative, can we say "mucaca "!

Well said

The press constantly covers for The Obama administration, not one question during the press conference about the IRS scandal, and the IRS targeted conservatives as short as two months ago! Of course Obama promised to get down to the bottom of it, sorta like hunting down the mastermind of Bengahzi who was openly walking around the streets?

so?

Nonsense. Obama corrected most of these mistakes promptly, often the same day. People slip with their tongues. John Boehner recently confused inflation with deflation, a mistake that a sixth grader shouldn't make, and the MSM pretty much gave him a pass on that. Economic commentators cared; most of the press didn't. Guys, a bit of charity is in order, and maybe a bit less pseudo-paranoia. ACES, the world really isn't out to get you. Enjoy the lovely weekend. Google Boehner + deflate. It's a hoot, but not a big deal in the long run.

He could throw, he could field
He had lots of reasons to complain.
He didn't complain.
He had lots of reasons to blame.
He didn't blame.
O is no Jackie Robinson.
He can't govern.
He can't communicate.
He can't unite.
He is full of blame.
Yet the media scripts him as a Jackie Robinson.
When he is actually more like Shannon Faulkner.

All these leftists, saying this article is pathetic!!

Reality is, it's very accurate!! BUT, in the aspect of fairness, right wing media give's their representatives more favorable coverage as well. That's just the truth. I think right wing media is more fair than the committed left wing media, but still favors their side.

In case you missed this. Here
Unpublished

In case you missed this.
Here is one if the best descriptions of Obama that I have seen.
The Architect of Destruction
Barack Obama appears to be a tormented man filled with resentment, anger, and disdain for anyone of an opinion or view other than his. He acts in the most hateful, spiteful, malevolent, vindictive ways in order to manipulate and maintain power and control over others. Perhaps, because, as a child, he grew up harboring an abiding bitterness toward the U.S. that was instilled in him by his family and mentors…it seems to have never left him.

It is not the color of his skin that is a problem in America .

Rather it is the blackness that fills his soul and the hollowness in his heart where there should be abiding pride and love for this country.

Away from this country as a young child, Obama didn't delight in being part of America and its greatness. He wasn't singing our patriotic songs in kindergarten, or standing on the roadside for a holiday parade and eating a hot dog, or lighting sparklers around a campfire on July 4th as fireworks exploded over head, or placing flags on the grave sites of fallen and beloved American heroes.

Rather he was separated from all of these experiences and doesn't really understand us and what it means to be an American. He is void of the basic emotions that most feel regarding this country and insensitive to the instinctive pride we have in our national heritage. His opinions were formed by those who either envied us or wanted him to devalue the United States and the traditions and patriotism that unites us.

He has never given a speech that is filled with calm, reassuring, complimentary, heartfelt statements about all the people in the U.S. Or one that inspires us to be better and grateful and proud that in a short time our country became a leader, and a protector of many. Quite the contrary, his speeches always degenerate into mocking, ridiculing tirades as he faults our achievements as well as any critics or opposition for the sake of a laugh, or to bolster his ego. He uses his Office to threaten and create fear while demeaning and degrading any American who opposes his policies and actions. A secure leader, who has noble self-esteem and not false confidence, refrains from showing such dread of critics and displaying a cocky, haughty attitude.

Mostly, his time seems to be spent causing dissension, unrest, and anxiety among the people of America, rather than uniting us (even though he was presented to us as the "Great Uniter"). He creates chaos for the sake of keeping people separated, envious, aggrieved and ready to argue. Under his leadership Americans have been kept on edge, rather than in a state of comfort and security. He incites people to be aggressive toward, and disrespectful of, those of differing opinions. And through such behavior, Obama has lowered the standards for self-control and mature restraint to the level of street-fighting gangs, when he should be raising the bar for people to strive toward becoming more considerate, tolerant, self-disciplined, self-sustaining, and self-assured.

Not a day goes by that he is not attempting to defy our laws, remove our rights, over-ride established procedures, install controversial appointees, enact divisive mandates, and assert a dictatorial form of power.
Never has there been a leader of this great land who used such tactics to harm and hurt the people and this country.

• Never have we had a President who spoke with a caustic, evil tongue against the citizenry rather than present himself as a soothing, calming and trustworthy force.

• Never, in this country, have we experienced how much stress one man can cause a nation of people - on a daily basis!

Obama has promoted the degeneration of peace, civility, and quality of cooperation between us. He thrives on tearing us down, rather than building us up. He is the Architect of the decline of America , and the epitome of a Demagogue.

Isn't that rush's line about

Isn't that rush's line about the teleprompter. We know where some ones ears have been. Being the first of his race, we knew he would be under the microscope. Now, someone of his race has the experience, an experience which was denied for so many years. Check your history. He was never given a chance from the word go. Remember the senator's quote.. "one term president" That more or less sealed his re-election. The American people believe in fair play. Rush told businesses not to hire, not to expand, once re-elected - that all changed. The economy got better. Businesses lost money because of Rush - your 401. Now they say he has an attitude, I don't blame him - I would too. Instead of fixing Obama care, they want to repeal. They gave it that name to mock it - too bad, the name stuck. No one that looks like him should have the biggest program since social security named after him. Sometime you get what you wish for and what you create.

You don't actually expect the mainstream media to EVER ridicule the "first black president" do you? He is black....HANDS OFF. Any criticism of his "goofs" OR his policies is obviously blatant racism. And besides, he is a Democrat.....long on ideology......short on facts and reality. Obama is not sure how many states we have in the country he governs, but he is absolutely sure that socialism will fix all 57 of them. He is absolutely sure he can "grow them from the middle" by using Obamacare to force more people to part time work and unemployment.

scrambling around to clean up after OzBama. Not at all unlike those nice folks who follow the horses down Main Street parades with the scoops and brushes.

And they obviously love to do it!

They have to, considering the fact that the unaccomplished failure in the White House pays big taxpayer dollars to people just to do that job and nothing more.

Most Dems I know expect to get paid just to sleep at their desks. So, these guys are true loyalists.

Obama exemplifies the culture

Obama exemplifies the culture of social promotion and affirmative action in our colleges that we see with minorities. It's obvious the emperor has no clothes-he is a dunce and a pseudo intellectual at best. Too bad he isn't half as smart as he thinks he is. He wouldn't lasts one round on Jeopardy. For the office of president all their education records should be open so we don't get another poorly educated person.
