Wake up, the nightmare's over

Football is around the corner, and the Border Bash leads the way

  • Follow Editorials

Once again, with apologies to President Gerald Ford: Our long national nightmare is over. Football is nigh.

It’s a dream come true for fans of America’s most popular sport, particularly here in the Southeast. Five of the country’s preseason Top 10 college football teams are from the Southeastern Conference. Alabama comes in at No. 1, with Georgia at No. 5, followed by Texas A&M, South Carolina and Clemson at sixth, seventh and eighth.

Nor could the football world ask for much more than this: No. 5 Georgia’s first two games? They’re against No. 8 Clemson and No. 7 South Carolina.

And, as always, the biggest and best tailgate party for the Georgia-Carolina game will be “Border Bash” on the Augusta Common Sept. 6, a charity fundraiser the Chronicle is thrilled to sponsor. With the two teams this good, the family-friendly party will be all the better.

For football fanatics, it’s a long, hard, hot slog to kickoff. It’s nearly here.

Jadeveon Clowney Kind of Day

If Clemson and UGA played every year we could have another Border Bash. What a shame this is only a two year series. Whoever wins could easily be the national champs. The only problem is our 3 ranked schools have to beat each other up.

A few years ago I was in the hospital with my appendix. When it was decided I needed surgery I told them to just make sure I was awake in time for the Clemson game. I was and with the drugs just wearing off it felt like I was drinking a six-pack watching the game. Not a bad day, a Clemson win and the painful appendix was ripped out like Jadeveon Clowney taking the ball from that Michigan runner.

We are so blessed to live in the section of the country that

has the greatest football conference in history. That results in the strong teams knocking each other off whereas other conferences have only one or two strong teams.

This upcoming season maybe the best we have ever had in the SEC.

But I ain't worried: ROLL TIDE!! ROLL!!!

Oh no. Another "season" of

Oh no. Another "season" of missing the 6 o'clock news on TV every weekend so folks can drink beer, eat pizza and wings, and watch young men tryout for the Concussion Bowl.

Just had to get that one in from the "other" side. At least there are the reruns on 6-2.

Early Start

It is interesting how Georgia plays Clemson and the Gamecocks very early in the schedule. If either or both of the S.C. teams get knocked off by Georgia early, they only drop down a little and can claw their way back up. Likewise, if Georgia gets beaten by one of the S.C. teams (but not both), Georgia has the chance to inch back up.

If you're going to lose one, lose it early.

True to a certain extent. But, if Clemson loses, it will be tough to get back due to the ACC's weakness as perceived by the voters. UGA or SC could still win the East, SEC Champ game and get a shot at the Title. I don't think Clemson can afford to lose.
