An appeal to reason

Don't get caught up in misguided hysteria after Zimmerman verdict

  • Follow Editorials

Who’s hounding whom now?

The very people who bitterly complain that George Zimmerman stalked Trayvon Martin now seem intent on dogging Zimmerman, even after a jury acquitted him in what everyone concedes was a fair trial.

They say they want justice, but only if it leads to the outcome they expect. The justice system spoke for itself, and on Saturday found Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

As we warned in an editorial Saturday, those who tuned in to the former mainstream media were exposed to a perverted view of the case that presented the prosecution in an unrealistically favorable light – and were likely shocked by the outcome as a result.

The case was not only riddled with conflicting evidence and reasonable doubt, but also arguably some pretty compelling evidence that Zimmerman was being beaten before shooting Martin – which would buttress Zimmerman’s claim of self-defense. As other news outlets reported long ago, the physical evidence indicated wounds on Zimmerman’s face and head – and on Martin’s knuckles.

If there is any reasonable belief that Zimmerman was defending himself – and there is – then the jury was duty-bound to acquit him.

Even in the face of such facts, the former mainstream media just couldn’t resist selling the story line that this was a racial incident reminiscent of America’s inglorious past. Many in the left-wing media seem to want that past to be true today. They want to believe the worst in America. They’re not interested in the evidence. It gets in the way of a good, self-loathing story.

There was no evidence that Zimmerman had any racist tendencies whatsoever. In fact, there was evidence to the contrary, with one black witness calling Zimmerman a friendly neighbor. FBI reports say the police concluded Zimmerman was an “overzealous” neighborhood watchman who exhibited “a little hero complex, but not as a racist.”

Indeed, the only racist intonations in the trial came from Trayvon Martin himself, who used a racial slur in describing Zimmerman to a friend on the phone just before the fateful encounter.

These facts, and many more, not only point clearly to a verdict of not guilty, but also bring into question the pretext for the charges. As strongly as Mr. Martin’s supporters feel about the verdict, many folks believe just as strongly that this case was filed as much for political reasons as legal.

Yet, even after the verdict, some still want to hound Zimmerman, urging the U.S. Department of Justice to put him on trial again for violating Martin’s civil rights – again, in the face of absolutely no evidence of racial motivation.

This mob-like pound-of-flesh incitement on the part of some is causing a hysteria that leads to civil unrest and irrational statements such as one protester’s lament of “58 years, and nothing’s changed.” That’s just lunacy. And it’s a particularly perilous genre of fiction.

Leaders appealed for calm before and after the verdict, while not really achieving it. What we might want to appeal for is reason.

George Zimmerman is not a cop, and he should’ve left law enforcement to the law enforcers. He should never have followed anyone as he did. But our hounding him makes just as little sense. The jury has spoken.

Neither this case nor its conclusion have anything relevant or coherent to say about race relations in America.

Unfortunately, the reaction to it does.

Faithson...there was NO vigilante justice. It was self defense. Only ONE crime was committed and it wasn't by Zimmerman.

Afadel, you are right....murder was NOT the correct charge. Since the only one who committed a crime is dead, NO charge would have been appropriate.

People, read the transcript not summaries of it.

When you do you will see that nocnoc is correct. At no time was Zimmerman told to either get in, stay in, or return to his truck.

He was following a suspicious person in the neighborhood where there had been numerous break ins. Martin was going though and between the buildings and not on the side walk looking at the homes.

Zimmerman lost sight of Martin and was returning to his truck to wait for the police when Martin assaulted him.

Zimmerman was not a "cop wanna be". He turned down an opportunity to become a civilian law enforcement volunteer who would have had a uniform and police car with radio but he turned it down because he said he didn't have time because he was taking classes and needed to devote time to his family. Instead, he said he would help as a neighborhood watch captain.

Martin also trying to obtain the ingredients for making a street mixture designed to get high consisting of skittles, Robutusin, and a Hawaii drink. He could not get the Robutusin because of his age.

At the time of the incident, Martin was on a two week suspension from his school in Miami and had been sent up to the town in FL where his daddy lived with his girl friend. Martin was a gansta wannabe who was in continual trouble of some sort.

As with most cases with most blacks, skin color overrules logic and many in the black community are lead around by their noses by the so called black leaders. Too bad more don't think for themselves and look at the evidence.

An appeal to "reason". Sorry

An appeal to "reason". Sorry "reason" is like Elvis and has already left the building. Since the publicity of the outcome of this case has made Zimmerman a pariah-how can you "reason" that this notoriety didn't have that effect. If we only read a snip-it in the local paper no one would know. This case was blown way out of proportion. Lots of cases where a person involved in a crime isn't arrested till weeks later-as we have seen locally. So I guess some folks "reason" that all the publicity has nothing to do with all the hoopla. Sheesh. And this has nothing to do with the progressive media-no it's been a media battle between MSNBC, CNN, and Fox. All are responsible. I think some think we should abandon our judicial system and make it TV fair like American Idol-so people get to vote.

I don't understand management

I don't understand management at MSNBC allowing the station to be used as a platform by Sharpton and his ilk.
They did fire the two people who edited the tape but the message continues.

Reason

By the logic of some, if you are a neighborhood watch person in your community and you see someone suspicious you should not attempt to see what the person is doing or ask him what he is doing. In addition, some wouldn’t want you exercising your 2nd Amendment right carrying a gun. To carry that misguided thinking further, someone who is followed and possibly questioned has the right to violently attack the neighborhood watch person some would have you believe.

afedal, did you follow the

afedal, did you follow the case? The Judge allowed lesser charges, two differant levels of manslaughter. The jury didn't bite BECAUSE there was over whelming evidence this was self defence. Zimmerman hadn't drawn his gun or he would not have ended up on the ground getting his head pounded in as an eye witness testified. It was not until Zimmerman was on the ground that the gun came out. If Zimmerman were "stalking" Martin the gun would have been in hand as he "hunted" Martin!

All the twisted logic against

All the twisted logic against Zimmerman can go the other way too. Twisted logic-all the talk of racism and oppression could feed the idiotic notion that Trayvon was a young oppressed black man filled with angst with a chip on his shoulder ready to start a fight because of all the frustrations of being a black man . See that oppression game can go against you too.

Although I regret the death
Unpublished

Although I regret the death of Trayvon Martin, I cannot support this efforts to continue this situation.

I do not support the vigilante behavior of George Zimmerman.

However, Trayvon Martin, like George Zimmerman, could also have walked away from this confrontation, and he also, like George Zimmerman, chose not to do so.

This is a situation of two persons both with egos larger than they should have had that ended in tragedy.

I agree with those sentiments

I agree with those sentiments dahreese. It is a needless tragic loss of life and both families will never be the same. I find it sad that racism was thrown in this mix between these two minorities. I'm curious when the Hispanic community will start being vocal about racial discrimination and Zimmerman's civil rights. Will there be an end to this mess?

Maybe they are a little busy WORKING at jobs .....yaknow...making money & they just don't have time to march/fume & riot.

I think some hispanics feel fortunate to live in the USA....as we all should feel.

It is weird that folks look

It is weird that folks look at a mixed heritage white-Hispanic like Zimmerman and see "white", and others look at a mixed heritage white-black like Obama and see "black". I guess racism is more alive than I realized. I see two human beings and Americans.

I think the black community

I think the black community see Zimmerman as "white" and are mad and blaming whites-not Hispanics. If they become vocal against Hispanics then Hispanics may get vocal too. I don't see the race card being pulled on Hispanics-that would be contrary to the Dem progressive agenda of this "oppressed" group. I haven't followed Al Sharpton's rhetoric-is he identifying Hispanics? I don't think rallying against another minority and interest group like Hispanics would fly with the progressive race baiters and Dem party. That seems a dangerous line to walk if progressives start alienating Hispanics and treating them as racist.

Why do people keep saying "vigilante behavior?" He was simply defending himself? What evidence do you have of "vigilante behavior?" What behavior do you not approve of? Is it the neighborhood watch program, or is it a person defending himself from a large person on top of him who is beating him in the head?

This is what happened that night

Trayvon after leaving choir practice at church went to the store to
buy some skittles and tea for his little brother. On his way home
singing church songs he helped an old lady with her umbrella and walked her across the street. He also saved 10 puppies and got some bullies to stop harassing a few girl scouts around the corner.
Only a block away from his dads home, George recklessly drove by in a Hummer and saw Trayvon was black. He immediately stopped the car, called 911 and started to pursue; Trayvon seeing George following him, ran away.
George being a track star caught up to Trayvon and asked him what he was doing around here. Trayvon said he wasn't from around here and was just on his way to his dads house. George then stumbled backwards and hit his head on the pavement; causing him to scream in pain. As Trayvon called for help, he leaned over to help George up.
That's when George pulled out his .50 Smith & Wesson and shot Trayvon in the chest. George then stood up and thought, the first bullet needed some company..and shot Trayvon another 4 times. 5 minutes later the police arrived and high-fived George..

Of course this is the version the Media and Rev. Sharpton want us to believe.

Zimmerman was not pursuing Martin when the incident

occurred. He was on his way back to his truck when Martin accosted him. Look at the evidence yourself not what Sharpton and the other race pimps are saying.

Zimmerman's grandmother is black. His past shows many incidents of him going to the aid of black people in need. He took a black girl to the prom.

It must be tough being the first "white" Hispanic.

Oh it's fantasy land time.

Oh it's fantasy land time. No, no that isn't what happened. Trayvon left his Dad's home, sneaking around the neighborhood and meeting up with his homey's to smoke some weed, then he went to the store to feed his munchies. Then in a stoned stupor this angry young black man profiled Zimmerman as a Hispanic and decided to try and beat him to death to join a gang. He called his girl friend to tell his gang buddies that he would be able to join once he kills this dude-ya know the initiation. Zimmerman was unarmed but fought for his life and managed to get Trayvon's gun and shoot him with it. Then the police changed the gun to be owned by Zimmerman as they conspired to get this Hispanic. It's the immigration issue gettin' everbody mad at the Mexicans. See it's all about racism isn't it. Sheesh.

Where were the protestors??

When O.J. Simpson was acquitted of killing two white people; when EVERYONE knew he was guilty!!

When he wrote the book; basically confession to the murder, you didn't see Al Sharpton and Jesse on the streets asking for him to be federally prosecuted!! Where were they? They were at thier mansions; sipping on a cold drink, thats where!! They are LIARS and RACE BAITERS!!! They only care about a story if it brings THEM headlines!! More and more black people need to wake up to their scam! Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson USE black people for their personal power struggle!! While good strong Black men like Allen West, Herman Cain, Michael Steele, J.C. Watts and many more are considered "Uncle Toms" by Sharpton and Jackson and those who follow them!!! You've got to be kidding me!!! When are people going to wake up and see these people for who they REALLY are??

I thought even the prosecutor

I thought even the prosecutor admitted that Zimmerman didn't use a racial slur. I did think it was interesting they finally admitted Martin's previous drug use but didn't allow the cousin who accused Zimmerman of molestation and being a racist (she was 6 and he 8). I guess they figured she may have been out to get him. But even if Zimmerman is a molester then doesn't mean he is killer-just like because Martin smokes dope doesn't put him at fault either. Apparently Zimmerman had some altercations with the law but apparently Martin have a history of fighting too. I'd hate to be a juror on this case-my bet they will be treated like pariah's too.

How can we be believers in Christ, yet, we cannot come to an agreement? Is that Christ? Is that love?

Obama is the "first black president"
