Race to judgment

They had Zimmerman convicted before trial; it doesn't work that way

  • Follow Editorials

Months before the first testimony in the case, the usual cast of race hustlers tried to make the Trayvon Martin killing into some kind of barometer of race relations in America.

The media were giddy to promote that divisive narrative, and likely will continue to do so when the verdict comes in. NBC even edited tape of a phone call to make the shooter, George Zimmerman, appear racist: It aired audio of Zimmerman offering an emergency dispatcher information about Martin’s race, seemingly out of thin air. But the network purposely left out the fact that the dispatcher had asked Zimmerman about the young man’s race.

The hustlers’ folly, of course, is profound and quite dangerous.

First off, a confrontation between two ill-fated individuals says nothing about the country as a whole or about the state of race relations.

This was a titanic collision – the result of a catastrophic chain of fateful events. Zimmerman appears to have been an overzealous wanna-be cop who ignored instructions from authorities to stay on the sidelines; Martin, frankly, appears not to be the Boy Scout the hustlers tried to paint him.

Secondly, while there’s a long dark shadow of haunting civil wrongs done to innocent blacks in American history, this case is not so cut and dried. There is great contention over how the confrontation between Zimmerman and Martin proceeded.

The jury will be hard-pressed to ignore Zimmerman’s claim of self-defense. And remember: Our system requires a finding of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case had reasonable doubt written all over it from the start. Many observers believe the prosecutors have overpromised the Martin family and its supporters by overcharging Zimmerman with second-degree murder; it will be most difficult to prove. You have to wonder if the national-level attention and intense protests forced the prosecutors’ hand to cover their backsides.

And with the testimony of supposed star witness Rachel Jeantel, the prosecution now appears to have under-delivered as well as overpromised. She has been a disaster on the witness stand: having to admit lying; muddling the time-line; admitting that Martin, himself, had used a racial slur about Zimmerman in his last phone call with her; and exhibiting an inappropriate, even offensive attitude in court that can’t have endeared her to the jury or enhanced her credibility.

“That is not the attitude you want from your star witness when it’s critical that the jury believe her,” one television legal analyst said, noting even the Martin family seemed exasperated with Jeantel.

Analysts “generally found Jeantel devastating – to the state,” the Orlando Sentinel wrote. One of them described the key witness as “unraveling. She’s got no credibility.”

“It was a classic meltdown,” another analyst summed up. “I haven’t seen such a meltdown in about 35 years. You may see the first unraveling of the state’s case. It better get better from here. If it doesn’t, they have real problems.”

And so might the nation – if the race hustlers have succeeded in convincing many folks that an acquittal in this case is an injustice and a cause for unrest. They had Zimmerman convicted before his arrest. But that’s not how our system works. That’s not how justice works.

The hustlers called for “Justice for Trayvon.” The goal ought to be justice, period.

You assume he has not or will not get justice…….based on what?

Trayvon was no different than most 17 year olds….. a few not most 17 year olds don't get suspended and use drugs?

Still a "child" ! ha ha ! A "young adult" that is responsible for his actions.

Trayvon was minding his own business…..has not been determined…..whitnesses say he was the one who confronted Zimmerman. Zimmerman kept his distance while keeping an eye on Trayvon. Wait on the testimony to come out!

Noticed a creepy person or notice a creepy "cracker".

who confronted whom not yet determined.

Zimmerman had possession of a legal licensed firearm.

An innocent teen is dead for no reason…..just suppose for a moment Zimmerman is telling the truth….and Treyvon was beating his head on the cement, your for "no reason" comment goes away.

You say Zimmerman must be healed accountable…..you should have said….if he is found guilty by a jury !

It sounds like you have PRE-JUDGED this case before the evidence is heard!

This case should hing on

This case should hing on FACTS. Testamony was just given that Zimmerman's jacket was wetter on the back than Martin's indicating that Zimmerman spent more time on his back than Martin!

(specsta) "So, are we now to assume that only pristine choir boys with high SAT scores, family membership at the country club and who volunteer to feed the homeless are the only young teens worthy of justice in the court system? "

Not at all.....I believe they are just wanting the true facts to be discussed in this case and painting at 5'11" 17 year old as a 10 year old boy isn't justice. Painting Zimmerman as a racist vigilante isn't justice either.

"Trayvon was minding his own business" Well according to recorded documentation, Trayvon was walking in the rain behind the residences looking suspicious. Not on the sidewalk, heading back to his dad's girlfriends residence....wandering around where he wasn't suppose to be (not minding his own business).

"And an innocent teen is dead. FOR NO REASON." No, a teen is dead because he tried to bash someone's head in.

Maybe Owensjef3, you should

Maybe Owensjef3, you should take some of your own advice...stop taking sides. I do believe most on here are looking at and weighing the evidence that has been presented, although we do not know without a doubt we can determine to the best of our logical thinking what "probably" occurred. If this had been my child, I'm sure I would have been just as devastated as this young man's parents but I would hope that through all the hurt I would want the truth to be presented. There is no justice sending an innocent man to prison just to satisfy my revenge and ease my hurt and to make someone pay for my lost.

Jury

Since there are no African Americans on the jury, when Zimmerman walks (which I believe he will) there is going to be outrage in the AA community. What? No AA's were qualified to sit in on this emotionally charged trial? And what about the Hispanics? Are any on the jury?
Yes, race can be a factor in some trials. "Jury of your peers" and all that stuff.
When the verdict comes down there is going to be much discontent, whatever the outcome.

Would there be the same

Would there be the same outrage if the young man had been white, Zimmerman black, and the jury consisted of all blacks and he walked? Why is it when the "victim" is black and the jury is white that somehow justice can not be done? What if the jury was all white men, could they serve justice better than all the white women? What if it was half black and half white and Zimmerman walks, would they say that the whites suppressed the blacks on the jury......

no matter who the jury is, if the outcome is Zimmerman is found innocent and walks, the Africian American community will never be satisfied (even if the jury is all black).

So what else is new Jake....hah...

Let me clue you in on some "attitudes"...in Richmond county Ga a few years back I had the pleasure to be on a few juries....at one of them the case was about young black males....we had 1 lone black man on this jury.....without ANY debate this 1 man said to us & this is at the first 10 minutes of reaching the room.....
"I don't care what yall say I will not find them guilty of anything"...amen to debating HUH...we found them innocent BUT NOT because of this man...he was more or less left out after that statement.
It swings both ways Jake.

Swinging

Things do swing both ways, seenit. This is a high profile trial and the glaring omission of an African American on the jury is going to be a factor if Zimmerman is found innocent, even if in fact he is innocent. You and everybody else in America knows that.
And what about the Hispanics? Are any on the jury? I have not seen the make up of the jury but if there is at least one on there then all that is going to do is fan the fires more.
Sad, really, but appearences mean more today than truth and justice.

Please tell me Jake what are we suppose to do...shiver & shake if the black population doesn't like the verdict....did we take the O J verdict without RIOTING & MISBEHAVING......give me a freaking break here...I'm sorry if I sound a tad irritated but I am...the blacks are about 14% of the population of the USA...imo ... it is about time they adjust to the rest of the population & take a verdict just like we have to take it..

If anyone should raiise hell it is the middle income whites living with this STUPID PC world of 2012,....it is time for all to adjust..

Next time the riots happen you will find a backlash from some who are just plain sick of it....good ole boys...

Trayvon Had A Right To Defend Himself Too

ICL wrote - "Well according to recorded documentation, Trayvon was walking in the rain behind the residences looking suspicious."

And exactly who determines the criteria for "looking suspicious"? Zimmerman?

There are racists who think that ANY black person looks suspicious, no matter what they are doing. Zimmerman profiled Trayvon, decided the teen was up to no good (by the mere act of Trayvon walking in the rain) and made a decision to engage in a confrontation that ended with Trayvon's life being snuffed out.

Zimmerman, and ONLY ZIMMERMAN, is at fault in this tragedy.

ICL also wrote - "No, a teen is dead because he tried to bash someone's head in."

Wrong, again. A teen is dead because a Barney Fife wannabee disregarded police dispatcher instructions to NOT follow Trayvon and also carried a gun on his person. A teen is dead because of FOOLISHNESS and asinine stupidity on the part of Zimmerman.

Zimmerman may be at fault but is not guilty of second degree murder which would require proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Zimmerman set out with the intent of murdering Trayvon. Given the evidence thus far you cannot show that when Zimmerman saw Trayvon he went after him intending to murder him. The evidence shows there was confrontation and a fight ensued Zimmerman was getting beat up and shot Trayvon.
The state prosecution overcharge and will not be able to meet the burden of proof required for second degree murder.

Also you must remember this was Zimmermans "gated" neighborhood and he did not recognize Trayvon as he walked , not on the street or sidewalk but in between houses on private property. I think a neighborhood watch had the right and duty to ask someone that is not from the gated neighborhood what they are doing there. If I saw a stranger walking around my neighbors house at night I would do the same thing.

Come on specsta

Try to be realistic. This was a mixed race gated community. If a young man of any color is slowly walking around in the rain stopping and looking around at houses it is precisely the kind of activity neighborhood watches are told to "watch" for. A "normal" person walking in the rain is usually in a hurry to get where they're going. No, it doesn't mean he's guilty of anything, but it IS "out of the norm".

ICL the mere fact that you got a couple thumbs down on your 5:55 post proves some are incapable of using their intellect in this matter and are ruled by their emotion.

What separates humans from animals? Is it not the ability to reason?

Shaking

seenit, If you are shaking then take a drink. Vodka in the watermelon should do it. I like justthefacts advice. It will be alright. I am only stating the obvious when I say that the African American community will be unsettled with an innocent verdict.
Out here we had almost the same thing happen with the Oscar Grant case. Hans Meherle (white) shot and killed Grant (black) in the back during a scuffle at a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station on New Years Eve. He said he thought he was reaching for his Taser and pulled his gun instead. He was found innocent of murder but served time for manslaughter or some such charge. Folks in Oakland rioted but it was soon forgotten. I think Zimmerman will get a lesser charge but not the one the prosecutors are looking for.

I heard you the first time, carcraft. Gun toting, martial arts class taking, self-appointed neighborhood watch captain, cop wanna be, who couldn't be was looking for trouble. Tragically, Trayvon Martin skittled in his path. Beyond a reasonable doubt is is heavy burden to prove on a second degree murder charge since there are no eyewitnesses that could see much of anything..so, he'll probably walk. But, sadly, it is my bet if the victim had been white, it would have been a slam dunk for the prosecution.
