A Cold War reset

Russia's manipulation of Syria exposes America's lack of influence

  • Follow Editorials

Barack Obama’s plainly stated dim view of American leadership in the world has run up against a cold reality: what the world looks like without it.

The president may have thought his oratory, charm and often unbecoming deference, as well as his upbraiding his country for having been “arrogant” and “dismissive,” would’ve changed the behavior of people such as Russian President Vladimir Putin. Surely it was Bush’s patriotic certitude that was the problem, right?

But a funny thing happened on the way to hitting the “reset” button with Moscow. After promising the Russians he’d have more “flexibility” in dealing with them following his re-election, perhaps even Mr. Obama now sees the depth of his naïveté. Putin is not one to be trusted or trifled with, and if he cares a whit about Mr. Obama’s charisma it’s only for the purposes of exploiting its own smug certainty.

Mr. Obama was never going to talk Mr. Putin out of Syria or his support of the despotic Assad regime, and until now – until too late – he hasn’t exhibited any stomach for using force.

Autocrats like Putin eat doubt for dinner and dithering for dessert, and Obama has served up a veritable buffet of it.

The United Nations is even more feckless, watching Russia and China veto a measure last year that would’ve tried to trim Bashar al-Assad’s sails. It was the last, best hope that Assad could be stopped by peaceful means from slaughtering his own people and throwing matches on a powder-keg region.

Some 90,000 people have died in the so-called Syrian Civil War, half of them civilians.

You might check Putin’s hands for signs of blood. Assad is Russia’s guy, but more importantly Putin will not let go of his only naval base in the Mediterranean. He has happily sacrificed 90,000 lives to keep it.

Reset button? Mr. Putin pushed it long ago. The Cold War is back on.

And at this point, Putin is having his way.

This is what arrogant and dismissive really look like. And what the world looks like with the United States at full ebb.

If U.S. air craft / Russia

If you are saying that there is a possibility of Russia attacking U.S. air craft, then I am glad that I don't have to make the call as to what The U.S. should do !

YES... Are you not aware that they are supporting the current regime? So now what does Obama do now that his bluff has been called?

THIS IS even more reason that Obama has to procede carefully ! Again, I don't see why NATO and / or The UN can not be involved.

Then it is also a good reason why he shouldn't embarrass his country by threatening to do something that he isn't willing to do.

NATO and the UN are paper tigers...that is why they can't/won't get involved. They are NOTHING without the might of the US.

I TOTALLY AGREE, but without going in as the alliance, The U.S. will be open to the rath of Russia.

I AM NOT saying "don't go in", just have the allies go in too.

So you don't believe the allies nor The UN will partner in an attack ?

It doesn't matter what I

It doesn't matter what I believe. The President should not have made the threat unless he had either conferred with them, or was willing to do it alone. To make a threat that you can't back up is just embarrassing.

I am not saying Russia would

I am not saying Russia would attack US planes. I am saying there would be a lot of games of chicken going on. Russia could well send tactical aircraft into the no fly zone and what would the US do, attack them? Russia and the US used to this all the time with Aircraft carrier groups. Palin was correct because Russia used to over fly US territory in the northern US (Alaska) and the Alaskan Air National guard responded.

Get Your Ducks in a Row before you blabber!

The other thing is that you get the support of NATO or the UN before you make the threat. Obama shot off his moth and has been called on it!

Middle East

We will never win anything in the Islamic countries, they will continue to kill one another no matter which side we take. We should end all hostilities with these countries and cultivate our own oil resources. This is and has always been a losing agenda for the US, they will always hate us no matter what we do. Let them continue to kill each other on their own terms.

Obama, home grown terrorist, and Cold War

I am so glad so many of you have your Doctorates in foreign policy. What is leaking to the public on Syria now has already been discussed a few years back. If President Obama were to listen to some of you, we would be in a War at this point in time.

First let it be stated again, our President does not support terrorist. Please read and look up Muslims, then terrorist. Big Difference. Muslim is a religious being, where as terrorist is a religious nut. For you 1% out there with nothing else to do, the United States has more terrorist than most country's we complain about.

Until hate crimes, certain clicks, certain gangs, certain functions, and religions to name a few stop trying to be individuals and respect one another we will always be a nation with terrorist born nation.

I am going to cut this short, for each of you who are writing about Obama and are trying to use other countries for your justification, you are showing the same traits you fear.

Leebraxjr. I'm so glad you let us know that you are so much smarter than we are, but maybe you should look up terrorist again and let us all know where it says "religious nut" or anything about religion for that matter.

"Until hate crimes, certain clicks, certain gangs, certain functions, and religions to name a few stop trying to be individuals ....."

And it is interesting how you are advising groups to stop trying to be individuals. We all know how bad it is for someone to be an individual. It goes against the statist mantra.
