Of thick skin and thick skulls

The first lady and her hecklers could both be more patient

  • Follow Editorials

The Obamas want it both ways. On the one hand, Mr. Obama long ago tried to argue his wife was off-limits to criticism. Yet, following the Clinton model, they’ve wrung every bit of political opportunity they can out of her.

They have made her a political figure. She needs to deal with it and grow a thicker skin.

While being heckled the other night – by a radical left-winger, no less – she left the lectern to get in the heckler’s face and threaten to leave if the heckler weren’t removed.

It was unbecoming a woman of her stature. If you’re going to inject yourself into the political arena, as she has, you have to be grace under fire.

It was the Obamas and Clintons, remember, who turned the first lady into a political figure.

That said, we don’t blame her, or any other public figure, for getting chafed at being interrupted and heckled. It’s beyond rude, and it’s an
unambiguous attempt to silence someone you disagree with. That’s un-American.

It’s the modus operandi of the radical left in this country, normally applied against conservatives.

It’s wrong, regardless of the speaker’s views.

With all the technology and media at our disposal, no one in this country risks being voiceless.

But sometimes it’s just your turn to shut up and listen.

Just trying to get another distraction

This was a set up by Obama's leftist friends to create a distraction from the scandals that are rocking the administration. It was probably scripted and practiced.

I certainly agree with

I certainly agree with carcraft on this one. This is the second time in the last few weeks an Obama; was heckled by a left wing radical. Hmmmmm, is someone attempting to pass the Obama's off, as NOT being left wing? With all the scandals going on, accusing the federal government of wrongful behavior against right wing groups; it's very curious that we have two incidents of left wing radicals heckling Obama's. Now, with the radicals heckling them; they could say "See, we aren't extreme left wing. The left wing radicals don't like us either." YEAH RIGHT!!!

Now, having said this; if this was an honest heckling; I wish Mrs. President would have told this piece of garbage to SHUT UP!! Ooooh how that would have offended her? In this PC world; we aren't supposed to tell someone to shut up, are we now? There are places where it's acceptable to voice you're opinion; interupting the President or the First Lady is NOT that place; regardless of which side holds the Presidents Office.

In some small way; I wish we could go back to the days of Alexander Hamilton/Aaron Burr politics. If so, we would have FAR LESS lying on both sides!! Politicians and RADICALS from both sides would be FAR MORE careful about baseless allegations and LYING about their opponents. A person makes an allegation against you WITHOUT PROOF; or completely lies about you, you punch them in the mouth; at the least!!

Since reality is not the

Since reality is not the strong suit of the right they haven't noticed that the left in this country has not supported Obama since he has not governed to the left. He has been right of center on pretty much all of his policies. No matter how much the right screams and overdoes the rhetoric, it doesn't fit with reality. The Obama Presidency has been too much like Bush ll to suit those on the far left, and in many cases those on the moderate left as well. The right wing likes to throw out names and play political theater, but all it does it keep the makers of tricorne hats and tin foil in business.

What is heckling?

Heckling is a form of communication, and therfore, a form of freedom of speech. I agree that there are places and times that it shouldn't be done, but hecklers are obviously very frustrated with something they have no control over, and are not listened to or taken seriously by the very people they are heckling. This should not happen in a free country! If Mrs. O wants it to stop, she needs to get off her high horse and dispose of that fake crown. Of course that will NEVER happen until the impeachment process begins.

Heckling isn't a REASONABLE

Heckling isn't a REASONABLE attempt to get your point across; it's an attempt to FORCE their opinions upon others by shouting them down. Again, there are venues where it's very appropriate and I would NEVER try to hush their voices. Everyone should be able to voice their opinions and desires; but certainly NOT shout down a President or First lady. If we are ok with this being done to Obama or his wife; we must be ok with it being done to ANY President at ANY time, during ANY speech. This simply can't be done in a rational, respectful society.

Now, having said that; my strong opinion is that these were still planned events. These were NOT genuine; but staged to disguise this administration as being EXACTLY what Bodhisattva just wrote; moderate. When the truth is; this administration if FAR, FAR from moderate. But, with left wing radicals heckling the President and First Lady; people like Bodhisattve can say "See, Obama is a moderate; dispised by the far left."

Mission accomplished!!!

Well Faithson, the heckler

Well Faithson, the heckler at the state of the union address was correct, as was Justice Roberts when he said Obama lied. Almost every time Obama opens his mouth it is a lie. You can keep your health care, I'll close Gitmo in a year, My dying mother fought with her health insurance company, I will not hire lobbyists, I'll have the most open administration, need I go on?

The American people aren't paying attention

Of course Obama needs distractions, when Obama took office unemployment was around 7.8%, well entering our 5th "summer of recovery" unemployment is 7.8%. black unemployment is still 13.5%. The rich have gotten richer and those on food stamps have increased. Obama has enlarged NSA spying on US citizens and we also have the AP and Rosen case, IRS scandal , Bengahzi, and Fast and Furious etc.

topic is 'heckling'

for sure there are problems with this administration, but heckling at the state of the Union is over the top. Issa is doing a fine job of keeping all these 'indiscretions' out in front of his 'entourage'. My point is calling a spade a spade.

Bod is correct-Obama is

Bod is correct-Obama is Bush-lite and just uses the same "failed" policies he lamented Bush used. Sad he has no original thoughts and just it just highlights why the man shouldn't be president-no qualification, no thoughts, no brain . Obama complained about Bush policy and how he was going to save us-but has done nothing but the same except for some social policy like gay marriage (but immigration the same). The heckler was at a private event-which I've never heard of such. So it is no longer Bush's fault and NOW it is OBAMA's fault. He owns it. He is responsible for the slowest recovery in history, he is responsible for a weaker middle class and more poor while his 1% friends get richer and richer, he is a war monger too, he is morally corrupt and liar and thief (and pot head) by his own admission. Funny no one cares.

“for sure there are problems with this administration, but heckling at the state of the Union is over the top.”
Yeah it was ok in 2004, when Democrats delivered a “Chorus Of Boos” during Bush's State Of The Union when he called for renewal of the Patriot Act and in 2005 when Dems howled, hissed and shouted "No!" when Bush pushed for Social Security reform in the SOU. That was ok but no one should interrupt the anointed one.

"He has been right of center

"He has been right of center on pretty much all of his policies."

He policies are BARELY right of Vladimir Lenin.

And hey, Obama spent his life "organizing" liberals for political activism and protests....including heckling. I can't feel sorry for Michelle having to suffer the rewards of her hubby's "work". Liberals, and the media, took a comical slant towards heckling when it happened to conservatives. This was not that far out of line considering the circus "protest" and "occupy" political environment the liberals have created. It's called the chickens coming home to roost.

Heckling...

I do not like it, period. It is inappropriate to interrupt someone giving a speech; and in fact, I don't like it when someone playing sports is heckled by fans. I think it is immature.

@faithson

I wouldn't put that 'a liar' in quotes; since Joe Wilson actually said "You Lie."

And, President Obama was actually lying at that point; so Joe Wilson was accurate. Is it really so offensive, when someone is lying; to tell them they are lying??

BUT, Joe Wilson shouldn't have interupted the speech; I believe firmly that he shouldn't have did that!! He made a mistake but he did apologize.

Maybe the First Lady should

Maybe the First Lady should have simply used the language our previous Vice President used on the Senate floor to Senator Patrick Leahy. Of course the Chronicle said Cheney was "is a highly literate man whose vocabulary should be broad enough to enable him to tell somebody off without being a potty-mouth. He should have simply apologized for his foul-mouthed outburst, particularly since it happened on the Senate floor, and then moved on." So Cheney's great and educated and simply should apologize for yelling an "F" bomb at a sitting Senator on the Senate floor, but Mrs. Obama just needs to "deal with it", "grow a thicker skin", and have "grace under fire". Also it's "unbecoming a woman of her stature." The protester was a "radical left winger" which of course is horrible coming from radical right winger reactionaries like the Chronicle editorial board but of course they have to stick up for Cheney and claim, "True, Leahy is a nasty, bitter partisan who frequently attacks the veep's character". A sexist double standard that allows right wing partisans to go for the big guns in a disagreement, even when not being heckled, but not allow the First Lady to stand up for herself and face down a heckler one to one. It sounds like the editor is intimidated by strong women and would shrivel up and fade away if faced one to one with a strong woman in his face after his out of place smart aleck remarks.

This is politics-it doesn't

This is politics-it doesn't have anything to do with decorum, right or wrong, truth, logic, or morality. Geez folks. If you ride that pony you have to take the licks when you fall off too. I personally find it distasteful and inane too but I think it is a good sign of freedom in America. Least it ain't Kent State where you get gunned down for expressing your discontent. I am really concerned about the Patriot Act and this watching America's habits all for the sake of protecting us from terrorism. To me the terrorist have won when we sell our souls and freedoms for the ruse of protection. I really don't care that this program has spoiled terrorist attacks either-although I wager that is just as suspicious as water boarding providing info to take out Osama bin Laden. There will be lives taken again and again during this long war on terrorism no matter our actions is likely the most logical and factual. I'd sacrifice my life for freedom. Enough nation building and enough bailing out everyone who won't do the same for us. The Fed actually owns 21% national debt-why don't they just forgive it this one time and let's start fresh-rather than manipulating the currency the Fed can really do some good. 48% is owed to foreign govt like China, but the rest is really owed to us through the Social Security Trust fund. So why not let's fix this trust fund issue and eliminate that debt. Now we are down to 48%-less than half our original debt. China I predict will implode within the next twenty years and that will help in that debt. The US should be strong again in the next twenty. LOL.

Ben Franklin quotes:

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Wow, is this true!!

"Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters."

Wow, is this true!!

"Man will ultimately be governed by God or by tyrants."

Wow, is this true!!

"When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic."

Wow, is this true!!

"Make yourselves sheep and the wolves will eat you."

Wow, is this true!!

Enough said!!!

Bodhisattva posted:

. . . the left in this country has not supported Obama since he has not governed to the left.

The more accurate observation would be that Obama has not governed at all. He has dodged, weaved, criticized, played "rope-a-dope," and shuffled to attempt to position himself as not responsible for anything other than killing Osama Bin Laden.

Obama — candidate in chief.

Obama — Washington outsider in chief.

Obama — nothing in chief.

It isn't just people like

It isn't just people like Bodhisattva, trying to pass Obama off as a moderate; many mainstream leftists are recently. Kinda curious, the timing of all this; isn't it? Right when all these scandals are coming up at one time; you have two left wing radicals heckling them. Then you have leftists going on TV saying "Obama isn't left wing; he has governed right of center." Then using the drone program, his continuance of the patriot act, Git-Mo as examples of his "Non-leftist" programs.

See, they MUST show outrage at these programs; because they have in the past, especially with Bush. But the truth is; they have no problem with these programs as long at THEIR side is the one doing it. BUT, they must disguise him as being moderate; so they make themselves APPEAR to be attacking the President.

The deception in politics is absolutely astonishing!! As Ben Franklin said; eventually man WILL be ruled by God or tyrants!! This is factual and IS going to happen. Which one would you choose because you WILL be left with one of these options?

Well, the truth is that it isn't really a choice; I know EXACTLY who we will be ruled by. But it's a tough road to get there.
