Obama vs. the Founders

President, forefathers are at odds over embracing government

  • Follow Editorials

“Unfortunately, you’ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems ... They’ll warn that tyranny is always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices, because what they suggest is that our brave and creative and unique experiment in self-rule is somehow just a sham with which we can’t be trusted.”

– Barack Obama

“Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.”

– Daniel Webster

Barack Obama did what he always does, in his pro-government commencement speech May 5 at Ohio State University.

First, he jumped at the chance to try to indoctrinate, particularly the young. He never misses such an opportunity. He just can never check his politics at the door, not even when asked to inspire a group of graduates.

Second, he grotesquely exaggerated his opponents’ arguments, claiming they “incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems ... They’ll warn that tyranny is always lurking just around the corner.” It’s a common trick of the deceitful debater, to
cartoonishly caricature an
opponent’s position to paint it as absurd or dangerous.

The thing is, this time he picked a particularly ironic time to be touting the virtues of government – just days before his administration plunged itself into multiple scandals that, themselves, reek of tyranny, no exaggeration needed.

It’s instructive to revisit the nation’s pioneers’ view of government, which was rightly skeptical if not fearful. The quotes above illustrate the fact that this is a president such as our Union has never seen before: one who turns the early-American credo “blessings of liberty” on its head – and who, instead, heralds the blessings of government.

It is self-evident, but no less stark: It has become undeniable that Barack Obama’s view of government is nearly the polar opposite of that of this nation’s founders.

Notice, too, in the above quote from Mr. Obama’s commencement speech, a few other little problems.

First is when he refers to the problem of today’s generations havinggrown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems.”

The real problem is that Americans for decades have heard exactly the opposite, particularly in recent years from this administration: voices that incessantly laud all the glorious things government can, should and will do for us. As with the founders’ view of the nation, Mr. Obama’s world

view clashes head-on with John F. Kennedy’s admonition to “ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”

Heavens, what has happened to the party of JFK?

It is an especially inopportune moment for us to have raised up such a leader who, quite the opposite of our founders, believes so blindly and unalterably in the piety and purity of government. This government is not only spending us to ruin – $16 trillion in debt, with perhaps $100 trillion in unfunded retirement program
liabilities and goodness knows how much in Obamacare costs. It’s also actually advertising to put more people, especially immigrants, onto welfare programs that are already at record and unsustainable levels.

Worse than the numbers is the inherent erosion of the work ethic and self-reliance that made this country great. And perhaps even worse than that is that government dependence prevents people from realizing their God-given potential; it strips people of the need to become their best selves.

The trifecta of Obama administration scandals that have erupted, primarily just in the days since the president’s “Go Government!” commencement speech, give lie to the false hope in government that he’s peddling. Anyone who doesn’t fear government tyranny, even after hearing the IRS targeted some groups for their political beliefs and the Department of Justice spied on the Associated Press, just isn’t paying attention.

The scandalized Obama administration has inadvertently proven our founders right and him wrong.

“They see no scandal in the VA where veterans paperwork gets lost and they have to begin it again or when the paperwork is complete but they are still waiting 390days later for the benefits they were promised.”
Instead of blaming the GOP for not investigating why are you not blaming the corrupt Obama administration for screwing it up?

If the executive part of our government had tyrranical powers as you seem to think.... then, yes they could fix this problem by fiat. And hold onto those AR15s. There is a bunch of non-GOP and government types which we need to keep the sight fixed on.

"Instead of blaming the GOP for not investigating why are you not blaming the corrupt Obama administration for screwing it up?"

The Obama administration did not screw it up.

It was screwed up by the moaning and groaning of "captialists" whose best claim to fame is that they are always paying too much in taxes.

That same capitalist who moans and groans about "socialism"
but who expect "socialism" from the military and expects the U.S. to send troops into foreign countries to protect his capitalist investments, but does not want to pay the costs for that protection.

Capitalist who expect the soldier to show his "patriotism" but if he is wounded should not expect that same capitalist to help care for his wounds and his lost income from that war or his wounds.

That would be "socialism, Marxist, communism" if the capitalist were forced to do so.

"The irony (is) that the veterans who saved this country are now, in a way, not helping us to save the country in this fiscal mess," (Republican, Alan Simpson).

Here's a little reading material for you bedtime reading tonight;

dahreese, most of us are moaning about the waste in BIG government. We are moaning about the deadbeats in the government, the leaches living off the taxpayer dole. No most of us do not mine paying taxes but dislikes the way the government is p*ssing them away. A good example is the $1.6B of the stimulus money for SRS that was managed by SC Rep Clyburn. Some democrat crooks got rich off that one.

Liberals might defend Obama

Liberals might defend Obama by saying "johnny hit me first", but it is NOW, TODAY, that matters. We can't go back regrettably, we can only go forward and therefore what Obama is doing is our primary concern.

Voter disdain

I read that Gov. Deal told his party in Athens that the GOP must reach out to others. Gov., Read these posts from your fellow conservatives, and I assume GOP-ers, and tell the state how your party will attract the very voters that some on this page think are fools for having voted for the Democratic President?

Let me just warn you that Bill O'Reilley was on to something when he cautioned Republicans not to major in minor attacks against the president like Michelle Bauchman did when she said staffers walk the first family's dog. Some in your party just can't help themselves. Now Sarah Palin is upset because Obama didn't hold the umbrella himself when giving a press conference in the Rose Garden. And on FOX News it is treated like Umbrella-gate. And what did we see shortly after this manufactured crisis? A clip of Palin, Bush, and Reagan been covered by an umbrella held by some one else.

It may not be that people are necessarily in love with the President, but that many Americans are simply dismissing the GOP as petty and mean-spirited and wouldn't vote for them if they were the only candidate on a ticket.

TM, I agree the GOP has done their part to screw up the country but the real problem is so many people are too ignorant to understand that the socialists/Marxists/communists have completely taken over the democrat party.

When? (by the way, that's the title of a Dottie West song)

Dr. Reese asked carcraft:

When, as an "old white guy" did it come to you that . . . there never has been "free market enterprise?"

Well, I don't know about "never," but certainly within the span of the last two or three thousand years that allegation is correct. But wouldn't it be nice to try, just once?

Wow!

That is a quotation from Daniel Webster that is worthy of considerable meditation. It reminds me of a quotation attributed to George Washington:

Government is not reason. It is not eloquence. It is force! Like fire, it can be a troublesome servant, or a fearful master.

People sure haven't learned

People sure haven't learned to read what was posted very well. I posted this guiet a bit earlier, "Ms. Anthrope Many of us conservatives don't like the RINO (Republicans in name only) part of the party. The Democrates sold their soul to Obama. Not all Republicans are sold out! " seems to me I indicate that not all Republicans are honorable. By many of the posts here defending Obama, blaming past problems, etc NOBODY has yet explained to me why we should put up with Obama's abuse of government and lying..didn't Obama promise to be differant, or maybe you all heard differant speeches!! If OBAMA IS AS BAD AS BUSH WHY DO YOU WANT TO KEEP HIM. OBAMA HAS DOUBLED BUSH'S DEBT AND LIED MORE!!!

There was free market

There was free market enterprise during the late 1800's early 1900's . Lot of abuse but some good stuff came out of it like America's middle class with Henry Ford leading the way. The inventions of Edison and Tesla lead to a revolution. The regulations put on business are further hampering our growth. The founders of Home Depot say they could not do it today.

B.O.

You know why his initials are B.O? Because his presidency STINKS!!! I am so glad I did not vote for this man the first time or the second time around. All he cares about is promoting his agenda, not running the country or solving any problems. I hope we have a country left after his second term. And I hope everyone who voted for him now is coming to realize the mistake they made.

Not a scandal

What many find "scandalous" re Mrs. Palin in not her record of service but the stuff that comes out of her mouth. She does not seem to be capable of self-reflection, thus everyone is the problem but her. WHO HOLDS AN UMBRELLA FOR THE PRESIDENT IS NOT AN ISSUE AND ANYONE WHO MAKES IT AN ISSUE HAS ISSUES AND SHOULD NOT BE NEAR A "RED" PHONE.

in GOP we trust and tricare
Unpublished

Tricare is the health insurance/care provider for the military and their dependents. Do you realize that it is socialism at its finest?
.
The AHA is based on a GOP plan (like the one in Massachusetts - thank you, Mitt). So why does the GOP object to it? It is a windfall for the health insurance companies because it attempts to mandate that all employees be covered by a health insurance plan. It does not do what we really need and that is to have lower health care costs. As it is now, we pay more for less when comparing US health care costs to other developed nations.
.
and, carcraft, RINO s? yes..... the GOP must keep tightening their purity measures to cleanse the party of these unbelievers!

Nice try Ms.anthrope, but

Nice try Ms.anthrope, but wide of the mark. You accuse Palin of incompetence from her mouth, my heavens have you listened to Obama? You have yet to address the fact that Benghazi was lied about. Tri-care is not a socialist program it is an earned benefit to military members who put their tails on the line to keep America safe. It is sorta like Social Security, you have to pay into it to collect benefits, and you earn the benefits. Please look up socialism. There is a reason we pay more for less, it is because we have provided better care. If Obama had looked at the facts instead of lying about his mother’s health insurance he would have realized she got good care from her health insurance and Obama is wreaking that system. We are adding 30 million people to the health care system and we the tax payers and health insurance buyers are going to pay for it with decrease benefits and increased rates. We are already seeing the results now. Employers are reducing work forces to part time insurance companies are raising rates and the initial projected cost of the program has doubled per the CBO. Ms.Antrope please stop the Ad Hominem attacks are really a little weak. I have lived 64 years, served 10 years active duty military, 15 years reserves, been overseas three times in service to America and have a masters degree, and watched the follies of socialism over the years. Eventually you run out of others people’s money to spend. David Axelrod, an Obama advisor, seems to think government is to big for Obama to know what is going on in it, please explain to me why we should increase the size of it? So please answer the facts about the lies about Benghazi and the other scandals or I'll think you are an echo chamber for the left and the reverberations have made you a little dizzy! The ad hominem attack is exactly the point of Obama making a caricature of those who disagree with him. Again nice try but wide of the mark!

Here is David Axelrod talking

Here is David Axelrod talking about increased size of government, has he become an echo chamber..“Well, look, it’s an interesting case study, right, because if you look at the Inspector General’s report, apparently some folks down in the, bureaucracy, ya know — we have a large government — took it upon themselves to shorthand these applications for tax exempt status in a way that, as I said, was idiotic,” Axelrod began. “Part of being president is, there is so much beneath you that you can’t know, because the government is so vast.”

so medicare is sorta like tricare and social security is sorta like tricare. They are all single payer programs which result in benefits.... whether health care costs shared or annuities paid out to retire/live on. Then these are democratic socialism institutions.
.
You need to rethink what ad hominem means, carcraft, your thinking is a little weak there. << now this is ad hominem and you have been doing this toward me. You also have me confused with someone else who posted about Sarah Palin. But, now I will say....she is an idiot.
.
.To be responsible citizens , everyone should pay into the health care coverage system. So if everyone was in the payment pool for health insurance, wouldn't that mean the overall costs for each would be reduced? As I said before, this plan was first touted by the GOP and now they are against it?

Ms.Anthrope, I told you

Ms.Anthrope, I told you Tricare is a benefit earned by soldiers in the armed services, it isn't a social program say like medicad. You still haven't explained to me why it was OK for Obama to lie about his mother's health insurance. You still haven't explained to me why, if government can't adequately run the VA health care system you think it should be put in charge of ours. You still haven't explained to me, why when the President's chief advisor says government is to big for Obama to run we need to keep expanding it. You still haven't explained to me why you think the Democrates are better than the GOP when they both do the same things. Onward VA, (PS make sure they clean the colonoscopes properly before your next colonoscopy!
