Is 'Obamian' now a word?

President's unfolding scandals could overshadow Watergate

  • Follow Editorials

Comparisons have been made recently between the lying, paranoia, arrogance and vindictiveness of the Nixon and Obama presidencies. But there may be no comparison.

Nixon may have just been outdone.

Certainly Nixon unashamedly rolled over people and the Constitution to cover up a third-rate burglary, and got caught.

But the cumulative effect of the Obama administration scandals – Benghazi, the IRS targeting of conservatives, the Justice Department’s secret seizure of Associated Press phone records, and let’s not forget the Fast and Furious gun-running scandal – may add up to much more than even Watergate.

In two of the four Obama administration scandals – Benghazi and Fast and Furious – people have died.

In the two longest-known scandals – Fast and Furious and Benghazi – there has also been stonewalling and obstruction by this administration. The attorney general was even held in contempt of Congress for the administration’s failure to come clean on its allowing illegal high-powered weapons to “walk” into Mexico and into the hands of ruthless drug cartels.

In two of the scandals – Fast and Furious and Benghazi – we still have victims’ families searching for answers as to how and why their loved ones died.

In the Benghazi scandal, high-placed Obama administration officials looked into the eyes of grieving relatives and told them an Internet video was to blame – which they knew to be a lie.

The AP scandal alone was termed a “nuclear event” by Watergate legend Carl Bernstein – who has been conspicuously and bizarrely slow to believe any allegations of impropriety coming from this White House.

“This is outrageous,” Bernstein said in a television interview this week. “It is totally inexcusable. This administration has been terrible on this subject from the beginning.

“The object of (obtaining phone records) is to intimidate people who talk to reporters. This was an accident waiting to become a nuclear event, and now it’s happened.”

Nor would it be out of character. This administration – legendary for its delicate rhetoric with regard to terrorists – has been simply iron-fisted with whistleblowers. Several Benghazi whistleblowers have said they have either feared, been threatened with or actually hit with retaliation for telling what they know. And a report says “six current and former government officials have been indicted in leak-related cases, twice the number brought under all previous administrations combined.”

The secret seizure of Associated Press phone records may be the most frightening of all the Obama scandals. It’s a transparent attempt to punish truth-tellers and to intimidate reporters and their sources into silence.

It’s alarming that the government would have the gall to seize any private phone records without notice or a specific warrant. To do so at a news-gathering agency is a manifest attempt to chill freedom of speech and the free flow of information that is vital to a self-governed people.

The authority of the people and the press to operate without undue government interference, and to be secure in our papers, homes and effects, was supposed to be established in our Bill of Rights.

Yet, as most of us know, because of the raw and often unchecked power of government, those rights can be as easily cut through as cellophane. The dance between the press and the government is a delicate one; it requires a respect on the part of government for our basic freedoms and the crucial role the press plays in securing them.

God help us if that vital balance has been forever altered. If this unmitigated assault on freedom is left unchanged, then the altering has begun.

"unsubstantiated claims are a violation of the posting policy"

But apparently not of the letter-writing or editorial-writing policy.

"The "Act" was written before 9/11 and was sitting on the shelf waiting for such a tragedy to happen in hopes of passing it. "

That's common knowledge.

OMG!!

Someone actually substantiates their claim by saying "That's common knowledge."

Wow, only in a LP's world would someone even attempt such irrational logic. Simply amazing!!

@HA

I don't suggest poking in the fire madam; there is no way owens answer will enlighten us.

Their narrow minded views and opinions of why WE disapprove of this President are ALWAYS directed towards that ONE issue; and you an I both know what he will say. No need for enlightment on that.

Really...?

Are you and the other doubter, above, so ill informed as to think the 342 page "Act" was immediately written after 9/11?

On the other hand, probably so.

The history is on the net; if you have the initiative to find it.

Look up the name Viet D. Dinh, Georgetown University.

.
I'm guessing that, yes, you do know why but don't want to admit it.

They wish him the worst because he deserves the worst. They wish him the worst because he is a liar and a manipulator. They wish him the worst because he is an incompetent failure as a leader. They wish him the worst because he has never and will never, accept responsibility for his many shortcomings and screw-ups or his dishonesty.

I could go on for another thousand words or so, but there is no need for that.

After all, you admitted that you know why he's the object of such scorn. Why gild the lily?

Friends and Foes

Remember what happened w/Calley? Remember what Nixon did? Remember all the ugliness we have seen? However, I have never seen the ugliness that an admin has done like this in regards to our own people - our ambassador begging for help - I think two seals said bump you and went in regardless of their orders and they died. Someone needs to take control - danger, danger I'm thinking again :)

OK, all you liberal

OK, all you liberal progressives, here is THE QUESTION. Holder appear before congress and told member so congress that he (ERIC HOLDER THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA) ,had recused himself from the effort to get data on AP, Holder said he did it verbally , doesn't know when he recused himself, doesn't know who was responsible for the investagation of AP and basically it seems like nobody was in charge of the investigation of AP. It would appear the chief job in the government these days is ducking responsiblity. SO PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY A BUNCH OF FOOLS WITH LESS ORGANIZATION THAN THE CLOWNS AT BARNUM AND BAILY CIRCUS SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH RUNNING OUR HEALTH CARE?

"The obama administration is out of control."

I would not disagree that both the IRS and the DOJ are both out of control.

But that should come as no surprise nor is it a recent happening under the Obama administration.

So is the CIA, and it has been for decades.

If some of you had been laying aside your conservatives politics and watching what I've said over the past months instead of trying to play bipartisian one-ups-man-ship, I've said any number of warnings about the IRS, DOJ, CIA, Homeland Security and the so-called "Patriot Acts."

Absolutely priceless!! I simply can not find words strong enough to describe my feelings on the mindset of these people. It's simply mind boggling; and now I'm going to beat my head against a brick wall to get some relief. Hopefully I fall straight into bed, so I don't have to move anymore tonight.

Obama seems to be your candidate. Why have you not been demanding that he clean house in his administration? You do know he claimed to be about change and transparency. If you are going to maintain Obama inherited this, why not hold him to his promises. It seems to me he has continued objectionable policies at an even higher level.

Just one more thing

dahreeese sits here and repeats, almost word for word the liberal talking points spewed every single day; then attempts to pass it off as critical thought. This is hilarious!!

Then goes on to say "Most of their comments are merely a parrot of what someone else has already said. They don't want intelligent, open minded conversation."

Are you serious with this? EVERYTHING you've said here I've heard a thousand times in the last week. Pathetic excuse makings and pointing to PAST bad behavior to justify this administrations actions, etc. Then posting some left wing websites that prove absolutely NOTHING but conpsiracy non-sense. Then you actually want to ridicule US for repeating others comments? Just another example of ludicrous, irrational left wing thought.

Why can't you lay the blame where it really lies, at the top? You libs had no trouble at all laying it at the top with Bush.

Consistency would make you minimally more credible.

dahreese makes a good

dahreese makes a good point

check my previous posts if you doubt my conservative/libertarian leanings.

We were warned that some aspects of the Patriot Act could be intrusive by Ron Paul and others. It's all fine and good to see the good aspects of the law when we have a leader that is only interested in stopping terrorism. But when we have a leader that is only interested in “drawing” more power to himself, why the Patriot Act takes on a whole new meaning doesn't it? We were warned and we did not heed.

My problem isn't with

My problem isn't with criticism of the Patriot act, it's when that criticism is extremely one sided.

Dahreese claims to be neutral on this issue, but makes excuses for THIS administration right and left; usually just pointing to examples in history to show "This isn't the first time" as if THAT is a valid excuse.

@KSL

Of course; they LOVED to throw Bush under the bus for things he COUDN'T be responsible for and it was EASILY PROVEN.

First, the Iraq War. They actually wanted to prosecute him criminally for "misleading" the American people. First of all, do you really believe a President personally goes out into the field and gathers intelligence information on the enemy????? That's absurd, therefore he must take the information GIVEN to him and make decisions based on the information from the CIA operatives.

Second; I'm not going to waste my time posting a link, so if you want proof of the NUMEROUS representatives that voted for the Iraq War, simply google it and you will see a VERY LARGE number of democrats voted for it. Yet, I never heard a single call for them to be impeached or put in prison for their vote. The hypocrisy of the left is staggering. Well, let me say there probably were a couple groups asking for them to be punished; like the Green party or Code pink. But those groups are so far left, LP's think they're nuts; and that's pretty darn bad when a liberal thinks you're far left.

Then these folks on here will go as far as to point out wrong doings in Vietnam to somehow justify things going on now. This is why we can't have POSITIVE Change; because these people can't leave the past in the past. We should learn from the past but let it stay there. Yes, America has made terrible decisions in the past, like slavery; but there isn't a single person alive today that made the decision to enslave human beings. WE didn't make that terrible decision, THEY DID. But WE learned from it and learned it's NEVER morally right to enslave ANY group of people. So why do WE keep getting it thrown in our face how terrible we are because of the past??
