Is odor of White House scandals spreading to all media?

  • Follow Editorials

If it weren’t so serious, it would be comical to watch the media try to spin the Obama administration scandals the president’s way.

When White House spokesman Jay Carney continued Friday to cling desperately to the fairy tale that the administration had not substantively altered the CIA talking points on the Benghazi attack – ABC News has released evidence that the talking points were revised 12 times to hide the truth of the attack – some in the media wanted to downplay Carney’s fable.

“Jay Carney has got caught saying something that wasn’t completely true,” liberal commentator David Corn meekly admitted on one talking heads show.

“That’s called a lie, David,” responded Danielle Pletka of the American Enterprise Institute.

Even Watergate legend Carl Bernstein quickly came to Obama’s defense after the IRS admitted targeting conservative groups, saying he “can’t imagine” the outrageous and frightening tactic could’ve had the president’s blessing.

Really Carl? It seems to us if that had been your attitude in the 1970s, that you would’ve never broken the Watergate scandal.

Meanwhile, conservative information outlets are reporting that some high-placed news media types are either married to or otherwise related to key officials in the Obama administration. Carney, for instance, is married to ABC News correspondent Claire Shipman. CNN executive Virginia Moseley is married to one of President Obama’s deputy secretaries of state, Tom Nides.

They’re also reporting that high executives at ABC and NBC have siblings working in key portions of the Obama administration.

Beyond that, we’re all aware by now of the love affair much of the media have had with this president. They’ve even admitted they gave him favorable coverage – and the favoritism was so obvious so early on that Saturday Night Live performed a skit in which reporters offered him a pillow to be comfortable in a 2008 primary debate with Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Obama also has benefited indirectly from the manic, unfocused attention of most media outlets, who run from sensational local story to sensational local story (e.g., Jodi Arias, the Cleveland kidnapping). Now that the victims in the Cleveland case have asked for privacy, will the media leave a place where they’re not wanted – and finally go to a place (the Benghazi and IRS scandals) where they’re actually needed?

For now it appears inevitable. The whistleblowers in the Benghazi scandal, and the IRS admission of targeting conservative groups, appear to have put two scandals on silver platters for the media.

You would think it would be impossible for them to deny the scandals now, although – as noted above – many in the media will reflexively continue to downplay the scandals or pre-judge how high up they go. And they appear to not want to acknowledge, perhaps even to themselves, the extent of lying coming from this administration.

The IRS scandal even broadened over the weekend: The Associated Press reports that senior IRS officials had long known that agents were targeting conservative nonprofits for extra scrutiny.

Certainly “mainstream” media outlets aren’t naturally inclined to care much about the IRS scandal; the agency was going after conservatives, after all. But here we have another “Nixonian” scandal, as with the Benghazi coverup.

Some also allege the Benghazi lies are covering up an Obama administration gun-running operation that would be illegal – can you say Iran-Contra? – and at the very least highly hypocritical for an administration intent on gun control here at home.

It will be interesting to see how much interest the media take in all this.

"Promoting social welfare does not include direct or indirect participation or intervention in political campaigns on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office. However, if an organization is organized exclusively to promote social welfare, it may still obtain exemption even if it participates legally in some political activity on behalf of or in opposition to candidates for public office. Political activities may not be the organization's primary activities, however."

Everything, and I do mean everything, I receive in the mail, in my email, and in the annoying pop-up ads that come from any Tea Party groups mentions almost NOTHING BUT POLITICS!!! The only other thing they mention is fundraising. I doubt that is considered to be one of the organizations activities when granting them tax free status. In other words, none of them deserve tax free status and the only way the IRS isn't doing its job is in not revoking it. They have every right in the world to exist, and to run every print, radio, and television ad they want. They can run around in tricorne hats with tea bags hanging around their heads shouting the latest craziness from Glenn Beck for all I care. They do not meet the qualification for, nor should they be granted tax exemption under the law. They are a political organizations 100%, not social welfare organizations. This is a none issue. Take away the 501(c)(4) exemption and let them go on their merry way.

Why didn't left wing groups get extra harrassment from the IRS

Well Bodhisattva there are plenty of liberal political organizations, why weren't they targeted? This has also been going on for years; some reports have it going back to 2010. I accept the results of the election it is just hard to accept that lying, cover ups and governmental abuse are now an acceptable standard. The tax code and standards are what they are, if you don't like them please feel free to lobby to change them but at this point they are the laws of the nation. All laws are to be administered uniformly and in a purely nonpartisan manner, failing to abide by this standard is simply wrong. To save liberals and Obama defenders time here is a list of excuses to put up to defend Obama.
1) Bush did it.
2) It is Bush’s fault.
3) Nixon was involved
4) It is a tempest in a tea pot
5) Another right wing attack
6) Bush left this mess for Obama to clean up
7) This is racial
8) Must be a slow day at the chronicle

Seems that the Obama Justice Department taped phones for AP reporters on capital Hill for two months. Of course the head of AP is outraged. Now that thier Ox is being gored they will feel a little differantly about (to barrow a phrase for another poster) SMNCICBHO!

I'm sure they were. Here we just have a person spouting about the Tea Party. A search of the Chronicle had no editorial showing outrage at Homeland Security, the FBI, and local police department targeting the Occupy Wall Street Movement. Quite a few mocking them, but none with a concern for their civil liberties. Now I know being tracked by Homeland Security and the FBI which would involve intrusion into every aspect of your life isn't as dastardly as having to fill out an extra form, but the Chronicle could show a modicum of concern. Had OWS had the tens or hundreds of millions of dollars pouring in that the Tea Party groups did, plus I doubt that many filed for tax exempt status in the first place. For groups that have politics and fundraising as their only 2 activities to be listed under groups that can not have politics as their primary function is laughable. From Teaparty.org:

“We are going to build on the foundation of success we used to elect more governors, grab more seats in the House of Representatives and force the Washington establishment to respect the demands of “We The People.”

This from a group that can't be political. The IRS didn't go far enough.

That pretty much sums up the Obama Administration, several of his appointees and the illegal anti-constitutional activities both have used against the public.

Humble Angela - That's not fair ☺

We all know that liberals never cheat on their taxes.
So why would the IRS ever need to investigate a Liberal Social Movement?

BUT, a TEA Party, now that strikes right at the core of their business.

Yeah....why on Earth would you arrest someone who is trespassing for trespassing? That's just absurd.

I see you still have some delusion that because I enjoy pointing out that you are wrong that I would EVER have a crush on you. It's sort of sad.

I didn't know that exposing hypocrisy, and sometimes out right un-truths is considered being snide and rude.

The ire from the IRS scandal

The ire from the IRS scandal is being heard from every group within the spectrum-conservative, liberals, and progressives. It's unfathomable that some here are trying to offer excuses. Even the president is outraged over this. But NO not some radical progressives. That is the problem with America-there are no rules for these radical progressives and conservatives. The Buddha was right and the middle path is the correct path-and hopefully it will be the one we get on one day.

Big difference between the

Big difference between the two groups. The Tea party filled out the legal form, and paid for their events. The OWS snubbed their nose at the law, paid nothing, and end up being a financial burden to the taxpayer. So I guess progressives don't believe in the rule of law because they will support a group who flaunts the law and then get outraged because police uphold the law and tried to move the protestors-who they warned were breaking the law and to leave. There is a distinction between a lawful gathering and an unlawful gathering. Sheesh.

"Had OWS had the tens or

"Had OWS had the tens or hundreds of millions of dollars...."

Best I can remember, George Soros was spending money by the truck load to support OWS.

You know, Soros.....the guy who has DOZENS of liberal, political, tax exempt organizations to "educate" the public on liberal and socialist Democrat political initiatives.

I haven't heard of the IRS investigating Soros OR his tax exempt pseudo "education" organizations. Well of course they wouldn't.....he is a Democrat and an Obama financial contributor.

And as for the police "harassing" OWS. Well, let's see. They were OCCUPYING private property, blocking public right of ways, interfering with commerce, destroying private property, and some violently attacked police and workers when they illegally occupied ports. And in many cases a lot of them turned out to be UNION paid rabble rousers.

NONE of those things EVER happened at any one of thousands of TEA Party rallies.

This is a CLEAR case of the U.S. Tax Code being used as a political weapon by a senior members of a corrupt administration. It may go all the way up to the Liar-in-Chief himself. But at a minimum, NO low level employee would have the power or the courage to implement this action. It came from the top in this administration and the Democrat party.

Benghazi, the IRS, Fast and Furious, a 50% increase in the number of Americans on food stamps, ADVERTISING FREE food stamps IN MEXICO, and now the smoldering fire over at the Associated Press with Holder "investigating" reporters....... I don't think this is what Obama meant when he said he would have a transparent administration....BUT IT'S PRETTY DAMNED CLEAR TO ME. Obama will SAY anything to lie and cover up his screw ups and illegal actions and DO anything to buy votes with taxpayer money.

Let the investigations give us the facts, not partisian pundunts who make a living with in your face opinions... on BOTH sides. must admit it is pretty interesting listening to msnbc and such as this all unfolds. just can't put up with the 'other' side's negative bantering.

faithson- Fast and Furious was NOT started under Bush. WIDE RECIEVER was. Under Wide Reciever the Mexican government was involved, tracking devices were placed in the weapons and only 600 guns walked and it became clear the program didn't work it was terminated. Under Fast and Furious the Mexican government didn't know it was happening. There were no tracking devices. Over 2,000 guns were allowed to walk! http://news.investors.com/ibd-editorials/062212-615871-fast-and-furious-... Wide reciever ended before Bush left office!
