The Boston Scare-athon

Don't jump to conclusions about suspects in Boston bombing

  • Follow Editorials

President Obama rightly asked the country Monday night not to jump to conclusions about who was behind the Boston bombing.

He needn’t have bothered addressing the nation. He could’ve just told his friends on the left.

The smoke had barely cleared at the site of the two explosions at the Boston Marathon when left-wingers on CNN and MSNBC were speculating that conservative Americans may have been behind the blasts.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews – a former Democratic operative – told his audience that “normally domestic terrorists ... tend to be on the far right” – notwithstanding the radical-left Weather Underground.

In trying to lead a guest to conclude that it was a domestic terrorist in Boston, who was possibly striking because of the April 15 income tax filing deadline, Matthews noted that “I don’t think Tax Day means a whole lot to the Arab world or Islamic world or … certainly not to al-Qaida in terms of their world. It doesn’t have any iconic significance.”

Astoundingly, Matthews also tried to make the terrorist attack about partisan politics – noting that a simultaneous fire at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum could have been an attack on “a modern political figure of the Democratic Party.”

Wow.

CNN’s Peter Bergen likewise suggested possible right-wing involvement in the bombing, saying it reminded him of the Oklahoma City bombing.

Really. After London. And Madrid. And Times Square. And 9-11. And the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. And American embassy bombings. And Mumbai. And the millennium bomber. And any of a long list of terrorist bombings and attempted bombings. And all Peter Bergen can think of is Oklahoma City?

Nida Khan, liberal blogger and radio producer for Al Sharpton, wrote on Twitter that “We don’t know anything yet of course, but it is tax day & my first thought was all these anti-gov groups, but who knows.”

Well, at least she admits her ignorance up front while blindly speculating and slandering a good chunk of America without a shred of information.

Not exactly what the president had in mind, is it?

One liberal writer, David Sirota, actually penned a column at website Salon.com headlined, “Let’s hope the Boston Marathon bomber is a white American.”

It’s an indisputable, naked, ugly pattern: Every mass shooting, every bombing, the left-wing media lean forward in their seats as they jerk their knees to be the first to speculate that it’s some angry conservative behind it. That’s their first, utterly predictable reaction. Gotta be right-wingers.

They did it with the Tucson shooting – blaming conservative talk and Sarah Palin. Oops.

They did it in Aurora: ABC’s Brian Ross announced early in the case that the Aurora shooter’s fairly common name was listed on a Tea Party website; oops, wrong Jim Holmes.

Comedian Jon Stewart later blistered Ross in a Comedy Central segment, mocking Ross as having imagined, “When I was Googling (Holmes’) name, I saw the phrase ‘the Tea Party’ and I thought, ‘Oh, that’s a pre-existing narrative! I should get that on the TeeVee!’”

And now they’ve done it in the Boston bombing.

Will this reckless slander of conservative Americans never cease?

The answer is no. They will keep repeating the unproven charge every time there’s a high-profile shooting or bombing, because it fits their view of conservative America as scary, xenophobic, angry and violent. They desperately want it to be proven true.

And if there’s only one example, they’ll paint it as a pattern.

Ironically enough, it’s these left-wing “experts” who themselves are exhibiting signs of xenophobia.

We don’t know who’s behind the Boston bombing. But we agree with the president that before a suspect or suspects are identified, no conclusions should be jumped to.

We only wish his liberal friends would honor that simple bit of fairness and discretion – and give conservative Americans the same benefit of the doubt that is being given to the radical Muslims who are actually at war with us.

Glenn Beck, Monday's BlazeTV show "No American citizen blows up innocent people, that's a Middle Eastern scene ..."

"We at the Blaze know that this Saudi national is a bad, bad, bad man ... This administration is playing an extraordinarily dangerous game. They have very little regard for what it takes to be a citizen. Before the sequester cuts happened, they opened the prison and let illegals out. Who does that? Remember also, the Saudi national that was -- is about to get on a plane -- involved in blowing the legs off of American citizens, being held in protective custody or being protected, at least, by our administration. He will be put in protective custody and the plans are to deport him."

Opinions such as that of this editorial will have far more credibility when they acknowledge that judgemental idiocy regularly crosses the aisle.

Credibility is inversely proportional to the size of one's blind spot.

Yellow Journalism at its best

Tea Party Nation: "It is a pretty safe bet right now that this attack was carried out by an Islamist."

Pamela Gellar: "Case closed." "Jihadi Arrested in Horrific Boston Marathon Bombing."

David Trochmann (Militia of Montana): "It was probably a raghead."

John Livengood (Kansas State Militia): said their king of group wouldn’t attack civilians but would rather choose a government target. He did say that a “skinhead type of militia where it’s all about race – that’s those guys in Montana and Idaho – and they don’t like society integrating the way that it has been. They could have done it very easily.”

Alex Jones: Of course he claimed it was a false flag operation and the government did it, just like 9/11.

The Blaze: Multiple stories of Saudi national as suspect and a nice little retrospective of things that have happened in April over history that could serve as clues (Columbine, Oklahoma City bombing, Lincoln assassination, etc.) followed by an ad for A BLAZE EXCLUSIVE, A $100 OFF AND FREE SHIPPING ON A THREE MONTH EMERGENCY FOOD SUPPLY! The Goldline ad is to the side.

Hannity: Saudi national arrested and deported.

The question would be: If the Chronicle is criticizing media for jumping to conclusions, why would they leave out all of the misleading, incorrect, racist, and at times just plain out insane comments from the right? If they want more examples, just watch Fox and tune to WGAC. That's all they'll get 24/7, unless WGAC still has Braves games and the overnight for the paranoid conspiracy theory set.

For once I will agree with Bodhisattva.

For once I will agree with Bodhisattva. Nobody should jump to conclusions. We are to divided now. My heavens what would have hppened to America and the World if we responded to the bombing of Pearl Harbor like we are to this. It's so and so's fault, no it is such and such's fault. When thing like this happen to need to band to gether against the slim and muck of human life that does these despicable acts! Obama needs to watch his drone strikes to , children and innocents are just that, children and innocents.

Quotes?

Here is one from one of our own local posters:

"Boston, on tax day. Another bomb at JFK Presidential library. Hate to say it, but this sounds domestic."

Hope you are not too disappointed it wasn't a Tea Party member.

why do you seem surprised?

the media are mercenaries for liberal government
they are mercenaries in this governments war on young black males
they foam at the mouth about Trayvon
while barely noticing thousands of young black males involved on both sides of the act of killing
they are mercenaries in the war on children
by not reporting every day how children are born in servitude to a burdensome debt, growing every hour
they are mercenaries in the war on children again
by not reporting every day our sorry education system, making people dependent on government
they are mercenaries in the war on women
knowing, and not reporting, how many more baby girls are aborted than boys
they are mercenaries in the war on Christianity, by never reporting a single Hadith about lying, or even what a hadith is.

this media can't surprise me anymore.

Guess whomever said it

Guess whomever said it sounded domestic was incorrect. The men lived together near Boston and have been in the United States for about a decade. They traveled here together from the Russian region near Chechnya, which has been plagued by an Islamic insurgency stemming from separatist wars.

Pot ... Kettle ... Black

I agree there was and still is too much jumping to conclusions about what groups, if any, are behind these horrific acts. However, in this day and age of 24 hour news cycles and competing talk TV and radio, it is pretty much par for the course.
For instance, did the AC come out strongly against Fox News back in 1995 when they were so quick to blame the Murrah building bombing on radical islamists when it turned out to be republican, catholic and NRA member Timothy McVeigh?
Jumping to conclusions is always wrong, but that's what keeps MSNBC and Fox News in business.

When the nation is still in mourning and a manhunt is underway for the second suspect the AC has the audacity to try to advance a political agenda. Just goes to prove that the AC is not even close to real journalism.

I don't care if they lived in

I don't care if they lived in a tent in northern Greenland. The point was being made about jumping the gun and just randomly guessing who the criminals are before we know squat about them. The Chronicle hypocritically pointed out only examples by left the while ignoring the far more numerous, and in some cases downright insane, similar behavior from the right. Neither side should do it but too much journalism today rests on who got it first not who got it right. I'm sick of hearing, "We were the first to bring you the story on ...." I'd rather be last and right than first and wrong.

You have to be fast with Fox.

You have to be fast with Fox. They pull their screw ups fast so they usually only exist if someone caught a screen capture. Even as often as they do screw up i doubt if they flubbed that one since by my research the network didn't launch until 1996.

terror and chaos as a reality, is the ability of its citizens to accept that the US Government has men and women who are willing to DIE for a US Government Mission no matter who or how many US citizens are killed.

Who has the most to gain from the bombing in Boston? History will tell us how much personal freedom we have lost and how much power the federal government has gained.

Domestic terror is the most powerful tool for a political agenda.

Does the US Government not kill innocent babies to promote its agenda of desensitization of the value of life?

Does the US Government commit murder in order to empower regime change?

Think objectively America. Who looses and who gains each and every time we are attacked or received as attacked.

Boston is under "marshal law". Have you heard that word used?

Ten thousand government police are searching a town with a population of thirty thousand.
