Obama sidesteps government waste to make budget reduction truly hurt

President Obama once promised to go through the federal budget line by line to find savings.


But today, he’s acting as if there isn’t one single dollar of waste to be squeezed out of the monster in Washington.

Faced with cutting $85 billion out of a $3 trillion-plus budget – because of the “sequestration” cuts he proposed and Congress couldn’t avoid – Mr. Obama has opted to cut what hurts the American people the most – such things as White House tours, and closing 149 airport control towers in 46 states.

They also apparently couldn’t afford to keep detaining thousands of illegal immigrants.

All this despite the fact that the sequestration cuts amount to about 2 percent of the budget.

In addition, to get to those painful cuts – in order to make his dire sequestration predictions come true and to politically bludgeon his Republican opponents – Mr. Obama is having to cynically step over piles of information on actual government waste.

As columnist Charles Krauthammer notes, one government watchdog report in 2011 alone found “44 overlapping job training programs, 18 for nutrition assistance, 82 (!) on teacher quality, 56 dealing with financial literacy, more than 20 for homelessness, etc. Total annual cost: $100 billion-$200 billion, about two to five times the entire domestic sequester.”

Consider, too, the scurrilous stories of rampant waste oozing out of our nation’s capital: the General Services Administration’s $822,000 conference at a Las Vegas luxury hotel, symbolized by the photo of a smirking government official enjoying wine in a Vegas tub; newly discovered $60,000 IRS “training” videos that are wholly amateurish parodies of Star Trek and Gilligan’s Island – produced in an IRS studio costing taxpayers $4 million; $1.5 million for a study on why so many lesbians are overweight and gay males are not; the list goes on and on and on.

Yet, this president jumps at the chance to close the White House to tourists in order to scare off the budget cutters.

Meanwhile, this government continues to pour hundreds of millions down various ratholes: The administration recently released $500 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority, which can’t muster the fortitude to recognize the state of Israel.

How dare this administration throw our money away like this – and then turn schoolkids and other tourists away from the American people’s house?

The American people are being played for suckers.

Well lets not forget the Obama's mega vacation to Burmuda with the 25 secret service agents and all that. Obama said we all need to get a trim with sequester except him and the first family!

This just shows Obama's lack of leadership experience in his

background. When one has never ran a business, not even a lemonade stand, or had a job in the private sector one has no understanding of budgeting or priorities. This is especially true if all you have done is be a community aggitator and a college lecturer (not a professor as many tout.)
I understand Obama and his family are looking at another vacation in the next few weeks. What's that, three since the first of the year. I'd love to have a job where I take a vacation every month.
This man and his wife act more like Louis XVI and Marie Anionette than the president and first lady of the US. We now understand what Valerie Jarrett meant when she said after the 2008 election, "We are ready to 'rule' on day one." Not govern but rule.

It's not REAL money. It's just paper being spit out by Bernanke and the Feds. Some actually believe you can print much as you need to pay the bills. My Uncle Shakey tried that once and got 5 years in a federal prison for counterfeiting, but we all knew he wasn't right.

Actually, the sequestrian law specifies where most of the cuts go. The Secret Service thought it was better to cut White House tours than to cut necessary security and law enforcement. The FAA has to cut somewhere, and everything that they do is essential. Please notice: 1. The cuts actually amount to about 8%, not 2%, because they are squeezed into only part of the fiscal year. 2. The Tea Party crowd lives on the myth that it is possible to make large cuts in government without pain. It isn't. We can make cuts, but we have to give something up to get them. That's why the smoke-and-mirrors Paul Ryan budget never actually specified which programs are to be cut--Ryan understands something that his followers do not, which is that the painless cuts are not there to be made. He'd rather not list them. Please note that the IRS training video was effective, just tasteless, and that the GSA scandal (which was months ago, and over) has been referred for criminal investigation.

That's, also, the exact reason the Democrats haven't submitted a budget. They don't want to make their proposed cuts public and tick off their base. We need an independent commission, like BRAC, to come up with a budget. Something HAS to be done. We are broke. This can't go on.

I guess they could not find the heart to cut that half million dollar hotel stay that Vice Pres. Biden just spent in Paris. That would have been a little "too painful".

Maybe...but as long as they were making money, conservatives and Republicans weren't complaining too much about Bernanke and the Fed until the Wall Street collapse.

As to the 500 million aid to the Palestinian Authority, let's not forget the 8 million a day to Israel (times 365), plus a blank check to Israel as well.

Which begs the question, how is it that the rest of the world knows that the U.S. (both parties) has sold the Palestinians down the drain in favor of Israel, but many Americans (political and religeous conservatives in particular) do not?

Couldn't be continuous one sided editorials have anything to do with it, could it?

It doesn't matter

The thing to keep a look-out for is any move to change the presidential term limit.

Anyone with a brain can see that Obobblehead (1) is a dumb as a stump and (2) is hostile to middle America. We're in a national survival waiting game now, with the hope that we boomers might live to see our national character, moral fiber and confidence recover.

Not really

Look, folks, I have studies the Ryan budget, and there is nothing of consequence in it. A real budget cut program lists which programs will be cut and how much. The Republicans have never listed cuts anywhere near sufficient to balance the budget, and they never will, because their ideas don't actually exist in real life. When Obama has to make cuts, he has to make them in the real world. When Ryan makes cuts, he makes them in the world of fantasy. If you want to cut back, you have to make sacrifices. You can't have it both ways. Sorry, guys, I wish I could promise pie in the sky, but I can't. Have a nice day.

I just love how you play word games to make things fit your side. Like saying 8 million a day to Israel (X365), WOW, that sounds like a WHOLE LOT OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT.

Ok, now look at the REAL NUMBERS; 8 millionX365=2 Billion, 920 Million. Ok, still sounds like a lot of money.

But that is still less money annually than we are giving Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey. Each one of these Countries get over 3 Billion annually from the USA. Care to comment on all the Fighter Jets, Tanks and CASH we just gave Egypt? A Country which wants to wipe Israel off the map.

Also, Obama has given Israel NOTHING. The only thing Obama has done is CONTINUED the "Memorandum of Understanding" with Israel that was signed in by President George W. Bush. The MOU allocated 30 billion dollars to Israel over the next 10 years. Obama has NOT allocated ANY new money to Israel, only kept Bush's promise.

Who and what is going to stop this madness coming out of Washington? I am sooooo tired of talk, some kind of action needs to be taken! Where is a leader/organization that can turn the critical demise of America around? Maybe if I had been born powerful instead of so pretty, I could and would do something(just kidding about the "so pretty"). I know GOD has a plan, but, I also know HE doesn't mean for us to sit around wishing and hoping, HE does want some work out of HIS children....................

I absolutely have NO problem saying the USA supports Israel more than Palestine; AS WE SHOULD. Palestinian are terrorists. Saying they still OWN the land Israel stands on, is like saying certain people still own THIS land. Thats what we have WARS for. Wars have been fought in history, hail to the Victors.

It wasn't ISRAEL that established themselves in that land, it was God. Read Jeremiah Chapter 24 about God telling them he will scatter them about the world, but he WILL bring them back to this land and build them up and not pluck them down. I promise you, they will NOT be plucked down. It will get close, but thats when the promise happens. Thats the parable of the fig tree which Christ told us to learn in Mark 13, Matt 24 and Luke 21. It all has to do with Israel becoming a Country again for the first time since Biblical Days; Which God prophecied. He said THIS WILL BE THE LAST GENERATION ON EARTH.

Those born in 1948 (Not 1946/47) are the last generation of this dispensation of time. They are getting gray hair on their heads.

Well...I think your knowledge is rather interesting. More so since the Balfore Declaration of 1917 specifically specifies the establishment of a Jewish homeland in "Palestine."

The letter was addressed to Lord Rothschild, a leader of the Jewish community in Britain. It became an important arm of the movement to create a Jewish state in Palestine.

The English name "Palestinian", to describe the local Arab population, was invented AFTER the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. These Arabs do not even have a native name to describe themselves in their own Arabic language. The Arabs who now claim to be natives of the Holy Land have migrated to Palestine and invaded the land after 1917, from neighboring Arab countries.

the white house is no longer the peoples house, it has been confiscated by lord obumler..to those who say ryans budget doesnt cut..then how do we justify all those dims who say babies will die, grandma will eat dog food, the world seas will rise again, or any of those multitude of scare stories we hear daily by the dims and their side kicks in the media..just stopping baseline budgeting for 2-4 years would result in a direction toward balance. but anyone who says govt cant cut is just plain lying..the govt is bloated, wasteful and totally reckless with our money...why anyone would want to give them more is beyond common sense..dims grow up...take care of yourselves...

Mine "reveals" that you don't know what you're talking about.

That if you read the letter I posted above of Lord Balfour on behalf of "His Majesty's government" the letter specfically says "in Palestine."

"His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment IN PALESTINE of a national home for the Jewish people...."

Palestinian" was used to refer to the nationalist concept of a Palestinian people by the Arabs of Palestine in a limited way until World War I.
