Shameful sympathy

Media outlets creepily empathize with rapists in Steubenville case

  • Follow Editorials

We could’ve understood if the reporter had expressed sympathy for the 16-year-old rape victim.

Instead, bizarrely, in reporting the breaking news of guilty verdicts in the sensational Steubenville rape case Sunday, CNN’s Poppy Harlow seemed to get swept up in sympathy for the two rapists.

And anchorwoman Candy Crowley and a guest seemed to follow suit – all lamenting the fates of the two young football players found guilty of raping the girl and posting photos of her nude body.

The very local crime has shocked the conscience of the nation for the chilly detachment of the perpetrators and the cavalier flaunting of such a horrific crime.

Which makes CNN’s almost gushing sympathy for the rapists all the more odd and outrageous.

The reporter, anchor and guest took turns to rue the damage to the young football heroes.

“It was incredibly emotional – incredibly difficult even for an outsider like me,” the reporter said, “to watch what happened as these two young men that had such promising futures, star football players, very good students, literally watched as they believe their life fell apart.”

In truth, the punishment won’t nearly fit the crime: Because the two players are juveniles, 17 and 16, they will be in detention no longer than their 21st birthdays – and likely much less time than that, and with credit for time already served.

They got off incredibly easy, though you wouldn’t know it from the tone on CNN. Crowley even seemed to downplay the crime committed, saying it was “rape, essentially.”

No, Candy. It was rape, specifically.

“What’s the lasting effect” on the two young men, Crowley worried to her guest, a legal analyst.

It will haunt the young men, he said.

“The most severe thing with these young men is being labeled as registered sex offenders,” he continued. “That label is now placed on them by Ohio law. ... That will haunt them for the rest of their lives.”

The poor dears!

What about the girl? Won’t she be haunted even more? And, unlike the boys in this case, she didn’t cause it all.

CNN wasn’t the only media outlet that went out of its way to present these young rapists in a sympathetic light.

In an article headlined “How The Media Took Sides In The Steubenville Rape Case,” ThinkProgress.org runs down how ABC, NBC and others seemed to show an inappropriate amount of sympathy for the rapists.

We’ve never seen such a thing in modern media history – or maybe we have and just didn’t realize it. The coverage in this case reminded some of a parody a few years ago by satirical publication The Onion – a video lampooning favorable coverage of athletes charged with crimes. In the video, a fictional college athlete is heralded for “overcoming the trauma of committing a terrible rape.”

The Steubenville rapists didn’t quite get that kind of coverage. But nearly so.

What were these people thinking?

Maybe this wouldn’t happen if they didn’t feel the need to imbue every news report with the drama of the reporter’s personal take on things.

They used to call that “news.”

Well Candy was the one that lied about Obama in the Rose Garden, as moderator she was clearly taking sides with Obama in the debate. This "reporters" are worse than scum. I wonder how many felt sympathy for the rapest of their fellow female reporter in Egypt? Do you think the men that held down and violated the repoter will ever get over the truama they suffered?

Thank goodness she didn't get

Thank goodness she didn't get pregnant since "it was a legitimate rape" and during a legitimate rape "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down". Even if she did get pregnant it would have been "something that God intended to happen" and she should just "accept what God has given to" her since it was "gift from God". Since it was "inevitable" she should "just relax and enjoy it'', especially since it's "virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex".

Oh the poor dears?...

That's the main stream media for you. They feel they can do anything now since they fixed the election and got away with it! I don't tune in to CNN, NBC, ABC, or MSNBC anymore because they are so biased and corrupt. You get neither knowledge or truth from the morbid sensationalism they put out. Just a waste of time and electricity for me, but obviously pure entertanimant for others...

Great article by the way! The truth!

@Angela

Don't forget, thats the same label they (Left) likes to throw at Christian Conservatives; saying we generalize everyone. When one of THEIRS commits an atrocious act; they will be the first to say "Don't link us with him or her." But; when a republican says something dumb; they are also the first to brand the entire party as believing this way. This happens over and over; especically with the Tea party recently, because they are afraid of them and their common sense.

The more the far left opens their mouths, the more they show themselves to be EXACTLY what they try to label the republicans as. These type of extreme leftists are despicable. BUT, until the mainstream common sense democrats take back their party, these extreme individuals are going to continually become more aggressive.
Like the late Ed Koch "I'm a liberal with sanity." Now, why would a liberal have to say that? Because he KNEW extreme liberal thought is complete insanity. This kind of thinking, make no sense what so ever; unless your intentions are to destroy the moral fabric of this entire society.

The average democrat out there does NOT think like these people. BUT, they've got to take control and get these radical "journalists" out. They are looking more ridiculous everyday; just as many posters on this site are. People are slowing, very slowing waking up.......I think.

A clear difference??

Recently, 7 Marines were killed in a Nevada training exercise. Harry Reid actually claimed the budget cuts (Sequestration) were responsible for this tragedy. Now, any person who possesses the slightest resemblance of common sense, knows that most democrats don't believe this; and NOBODY except extremists with an agenda, would spout such non-sense.

The difference is; I wouldn't even attempt to link ALL DEMOCRATS with Harry Reid's idiotic statement. Harry Reid is a bumbling idiot; with the only person outpreforming him on the idiotic scale, being our VP Joe Biden. WE with common sense realize an entire party SHOULDN'T be link to these idiots. BUT, those on the left will take ANY opportunity to demean or belittle the entire republican party; because they lack morale principals, shown in their belief system and what they stand for.

One of the main thing I hope other students take away

from this horrible incident is actions have consequences and responsiblity comes with both.
What is a shame is how many of the students have rallied around the rapists and expressed no sympathy for the victim. My wife said that this young lady will be/is shamed by this incident and its aftermath so badly that the family may have to move away.
Apparently, football has become the most important thing in the town because of how many state championships it has won. Pride in the sports accomplishment has overshadowed reality. One article I read said the football team has 27 coaches! 27 coaches! Can you believe that? And, by the way, the principal and some of the coaches are being investigated in a coverup of the rape.
The bottom line to ask one self is, "What would I want and what would I do if that were my daughter?"

Im not surprised by the comments of Crowley and her ilk on CNN. In the past reporters stated the available facts and moved on to another topic. Now we get a quick headline intro and then get treated to a "panel of experts" who beat the story to death. Of all the stooges on the news networks, Piers Morgan is the biggest tool of all. Tune in any night and listen to him get offended by the desire of Americans to qwn firearms. Last night he paraded Michael Moore out to rail against the NRA and 2nd Ammendment rights in general.

I'm glad the perps are being punished. But they made one HUGE mistake. They didn't hire Ben Rothlisberger's lawyer. This poor girl was just as drunk as Ben's victim. When they get out, they could have successful careers with the PIttsburgh Steelers. If you win games, the Steelers will give you a pass on such behavior.

Bodhisattva (above) has quoted a number of Republican conservative's statements concerning their views of females and rape;

"Thank goodness she didn't get pregnant since "it was a legitimate rape" and during a legitimate rape "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down".

"Even if she did get pregnant it would have been "something that God intended to happen" and she should just "accept what God has given to" her since it was "gift from God".

"Since it was "inevitable" she should "just relax and enjoy it'', especially since it's "virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex".

And for quoting those conservative's remarks, he currently has 11 minus marks.

Apparently, Bodhisattva hit a few (11) conservative nerves.

Dahreese, was there any part of this you misinterpreted? :

"Way to change the subject and deflect from the crime that was committed.

What do some nut Republican's have to do with the story? The poster could have said "I will be glad when peach season is here" and it would have had about as much relevance.

I don't think I misinterpreted anything.

For once, at least, the AC has almost played its editorial straight about the rapers and the victim. But then has to go off on the remarks of a few media personalities as representating the entire media and representing itself as middle of the road.

Apparently, Bodhisattva hit a few (11) conservative nerves by posting the rantings of the far right and all he got for his efforts was 11 minus marks from the right wing posters on here.

Don’t take it too personally, I see it as a badge of honor. Usually someone has to “flag” and complain for a post to get pulled. Just goes to show that you got “under their skin” so to speak.
