Keep praying

Remember families of Thomson crash victims in your thoughts

  • Follow Editorials

Here’s the thing about the Wednesday night plane crash near Thomson that killed five people and injured two: After you finish reading about it, you can just put down your paper or turn off your computer and get on with your day.

Seven families can’t.

Two families, as we write this, are fretting over the futures of chief pilot Richard Trammell and another survivor who were airlifted to Georgia Regents Medical Center.

The other five families?

Unbridled tragedy.

Dr. Steven Roth, Kim Davidson, Heidi McCorkle, Tiffany Porter and Lisa Volpitto worked for the Vein Guys, the medical practice Roth co-founded that specialized in treating vein diseases but, on the side, gave back to our community in many ways.

Whenever we part company with a relative, friend or
acquaintance, we never really know if we ever will see that person alive again. But you can’t dwell on that fact. If you did, you’d never get anything done.

Instead, dwell on this: The people who died in this crash left this world loved. That shouldn’t be taken for granted.

A sign on the door of Augusta’s Vein Guys office says, “Thank you so much for all of your sweet thoughts and prayers! Please do continue to pray for us all, we need it so much right now!”

We all certainly will.

Keep praying? Why??

Seems like a simple phone call or social media contact offering help is going to do more good than 'praying' to a god who did nothing to help the pilot land safely.

Oh, and what if you're praying to the 'wrong' god? If you're going to believe prayer has any efficacy, you also have to believe that there's only your own personal wish ATM to pray to, and does it match the one all these others have sworn fealty to?

Seems to me a normal Humanist gestures are FAR more useful, like the insurance payouts, the Social Security survivors benefits, et al. that society as a whole will provide.
