'60 Minutes' softball toss to Obama a 'grotesque embarrassment'

  • Follow Editorials

The over-the-top, irrational hatred of Fox News, particularly by those who never watch it, isn’t quite understandable, but it’s somewhat explainable.

Liberals who dominate most traditional news media – CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, PBS, NPR and most newspapers – “can’t stand the fact that they no longer have a monopoly,” syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer said the other day.

The founders of Fox, he said, found a “niche” in broadcasting: half the American people – “the half that have suffered for decades” from getting only one slant on the world, a liberal one.

It’s interesting, too, adds fellow conservative Jonah Goldberg, that rich liberals looked at that overwhelmingly liberal media lineup and said, “Hey, we need another network to the left of MSNBC.” So they created the far-left Current TV, which has been gobbled up by Al-Jazeera, the leading Arab network.

If money and audience drove such decisions, they might have created a conservative competitor to Fox, which tramples all the liberal outlets in ratings. But today’s broadcast media aren’t in a money or ratings war; they’re in an ideological war. And their commander in chief is Barack Obama.

Consider the lengths CBS alone has been willing to go to in order to prop up Obama: They’ve now sullied the 60 Minutes brand with a “grotesque embarrassment” of an interview, as Goldberg puts it, of Mr. Obama and outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Amazingly, the interviewer, Steve Kroft, explained that Obama chose to go onto 60 Minutes because “I think he knows that we’re not going to play gotcha with him.” That’s interesting, since that’s precisely why politicians used to avoid going on the show – because they knew the questioning would be tough and relentless. Now, a 60 Minutes star is actually touting the opposite! And, indeed, the interview was bereft of any real journalism, and was even a bit fawning.

Writing in The Atlantic, journalism commentator Conor Friedersdorf called it “another softball interview with the most powerful man in the world, a performance that ought to earn (Kroft) a rebuke from his peers in the news business but almost certainly won’t.”

Comparing the questions asked, Friedersdorf even suggests Comedy Central network was tougher on Obama than 60 Minutes.

What a disgrace for a formerly proud broadcast news magazine. Even National Public Radio liberal Mara Liasson concluded, “It was a kind of puff piece exit interview pat-on-the-head for Hillary. (Kroft) played along, from what we could tell.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Obama again has tried to demonize the only major news outlet that won’t genuflect to him, Fox News. In an interview in the far-left New Republic magazine, he claimed Republicans in Congress feel “punished” on Fox and on talk radio for making deals with Democrats.

That’s not only silly – it was Republicans who caved on tax increases in the latest budget deal, while Democrats yieled no ground on spending – but in keeping with Obama’s modus operandi of trying to silence opposition. He once tried to claim Fox wasn’t even a news outlet, and has tried to limit its access to White House news. Even CNN stuck up for Fox at that point.

We find the rabid complaints about Fox to be specious and unsubstantiated. It’s unseemly, and quite beneath a president of the United States, to be leading the harangue, especially when he’s getting treated to such puffery from other outlets.

We need Fox News and talk radio just to come close to balancing the flattery from the toadies in the Fawn News.

sorry, HA

Nothing you can say can alter the fact that Congress had left town, and the only sense they were "NOT in recess," as you so disingenuously put it, was under the technical maneuver of "pro forma" sessions. Let me put it this way: had Obama sent those appointments to the Senate for confirmation, they could not have been voted on as there were no senators present to vote! And yet you say they were "NOT in recess"!
The emperor has no clothes, Humble. We will have to see whether the conservative controlled SCOTUS will uphold this Republican ruse. If it does, then I cannot wait for the next time a Republican president resorts to a recess appointment and the Democrats call for "pro-forma" sessions to prevent it. I wonder if you will sing the same song then?

ORIGINIALL the recessed

ORIGINIALL the recessed appointments were made when the senate actually was out of town and the vacancy occurred during that time when they were out of town..this was due to transportation and that the senators then actually lived and worked in the real world also..neither apply now...the other factor was that obumler utterly and blantly abused that privlege like no other president..see the pattern..probably good for the High Court to rule and hopefully return it to its originial intent. ..for all future prezs.

Nothing can alter the FACT that Congress was NOT in recess...you can call it what you want, but it is a fact.

Want to anger a conservative, tell him a lie.

Want to anger a liberal, tell him the truth.

Keep waiting. So far, Obama is the only one who has violated the Constitution in this blatant way......but his acolytes don't seem to care.

Come on now eel, the

Come on now eel, the Republicans spend as much as the Dems, and claim it was the "affirmative action" guy in the White House -- even though the White House has no spending power. And their voters actually believe it. They don't look at appropriations to see who's really spending what, they don't even understand who has the spending power in the Constitution, and you want them to process the fact that when Congress is physically not present, they are in recess? They're still working on round peg square hole. Be gentle.

Allhans, PLEASE learn about

Allhans, PLEASE learn about our Federal court system as it pertains to matters of Constitutionality. There was no "guilty" finding. A Federal judge came to the opinion that Congress is not in recess if a single person shows up and bangs a gavel in an empty room. This opinion will be reviewed by other Federal court levels, possibly up to the SC. The SC will make a final determination. Even then, there is no "guilty" finding.

I will personally be very surprised if the SC supports the opinion that a Congress is not in recess merely because somebody bangs a gavel in an empty room. The SC tends to not decide in favor of childish literalism, but on the basis of what is substantively real.

Christ taught us to be

Christ taught us to be WATCHMEN. With the secular leftists controlling the vast majority of new outlets, do you not think God would provide us a way to WATCH? Of course He would and it absolutely eats the liberals alive; because they would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to shut Fox down. They can NOT stand the fact there is a conservative voice showing the people what is really going on. They are kicking against the prick; God is still in complete control. We must be WATCHMEN and know what is going on; continue to do so my friends. Watch and learn. We will lose more and more battles, but we have the victory in the end. At the end of the Revolutionary War, we lost thousands of lives in battle; was the victory worth all those lives? Absolutely. When we see our victory unfolding upon Christ's return, all these lost battles will seem as nothing!! Keep fighting none the less; just don't let it get you down when you see us losing battles.

Burn is right about spending

They ought to at least let the President submit a budget or something around the 4th of Feb at the latest. As leader of the country he should set the tone for the financial decisions that need to be made. Then Congress can get together and decide if his proposals are sound.

Burn, there are a myriad of rules Congress has to follow. The best bills sometimes get hung up in the bureaucracy, but that doesn't mean we can ignore the protocol. Where would you draw the line when letting the president override Congress? If he decides something is not fair, he can just ignore it in spite of the Congress?

Didn't you get a copy of the memo Obama sent over. "I'm not submitting a budget again this year."

Congress should send him a memo, "We're turning off the lights in the White House."

Thanks Angela

for using the word "Impeachment" once today!

For the solution that would cure the destructive disease that America has today, it is the only legal means left besides a civil war.

I would not have any regrets using all my ammo on those that would oppose it, because they would then become the enemies of America.
True Americans have fought against similar enemies in past battles.

I watched the Congressional

I watched the Congressional hearing for on MSNBC for Hagel. As expected the Dems just gave him support and he was hammered by the GOP. Then watching the talking heads on MSNBC all they did was just attack those daring to question Hagel. Pitiful-Pravda would be jealous. I'd love to see MSNBC call Obama for attacking any free press, surely if it were a Rep President who attacked a specific station then the Dems would impeach the man. Ridiculous. I can't wait till Godoy gets that civil war he keeps ranting about and the likely extinction of this minority progressive voice. Fox isn't number one because America has turned progressive-still middle to middle right. CNN at least tried to be impartial till this last year but now journalism is dead. Even NPR, which I've always been an advocate, is starting to lose credibility. When we starting hearing just one side of any journalist story then things are way outta control.

Burninater- It was a federal appeals panel of three judges that issued the ruling, the only appeal for Obama is the Supremes. until the Supreme Court over rules the three judge panel Obama has acted unconstitutionally. I didn't like the Supremes upholding Obama care but it is the law of the land. Until the Supreme Court over rules the Panel of appeals court judges his appointments are unconstituional..got it?

Wow let's argue

Wow let's argue technicalities of Rep House manipulation (which is technically legal) when the Dem dominated Senate has just out right failed its constitutional duty to produce a budget and broke the law for a number of years now. Pitiful. I'd like to see the SCOTUS address this constitutional abuse with impeachments of violators.

I just hope you've got the guts to repeat everything you've said, when THAT day comes; but you won't. The Bible tells us exactly what people like you will say; even then, you will try con Christ and tell Him you love Him. But it also says he will say "Depart from me, I never knew you".

Obama will castigate the House but turns a blind eye to out right violation of the constitution. His job is to execute the laws
(not american citizens) and protect the constitution. He is doing just the opposite. To be "Fair" I say impeach all three branches and have new elections. Let no politician who presently holds office be allowed to hold office. Clean slate. Then just follow the constitution -as they all should be doing-and let's see what happens.
