Sadly, Clinton's insult, that the cause of the Benghazi raid doesn't matter, may fit

  • Follow Editorials

The Obama administration did its level best to prevent you from hearing it. But those listening closely Wednesday nonetheless heard the unmistakable thud of American self-governance hitting a new low.

This administration lied through its teeth last fall about what caused the attack on our embassy in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including our ambassador to Libya. Officials initially blamed an anti-Islam Internet video – and, in fact, the American filmmaker is the only person incarcerated as a result of the attack.

Ultimately, after U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice went on a handful of Sunday talk shows to spin the fantasy that the Internet video caused a public protest outside our embassy that went bad, the administration had to admit there was never any protest at all – and that the attack was a premeditated al-Qaida-style assault.

The administration also has been caught red-handed with cables from the Benghazi embassy pleading for better security prior to the attack – which caught officials napping on Sept. 11, of all days.

Then the administration managed to delay the day of reckoning on Capitol Hill far past the November election – until this Wednesday, when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton finally fielded the questions of Congress in an oddly truncated one-day session.

There, she managed to take things to an entirely new low. Exhibiting gratuitous and unjustified indignation, Clinton flailed her arms and angrily wailed about the cause of the attack, “What difference ... does it make?”

Well, four dead Americans makes a huge difference to some of us, Madame Secretary.

We have never seen so many well-educated, high-paid, high-office adults acting so much like teenagers who didn’t do their homework and are trying to shift both blame and attention. Except that, in this case, four people lie dead and terrorists around the world have seen that America can be attacked with impunity.

Mrs. Clinton’s Biden-esque theatrics are shameful enough. But her unprecedented claim that the cause of last fall’s deadly attack doesn’t matter is beyond shameful. It’s disgusting and reprehensible. A country that was lied to and stonewalled – to this day – is now being told not to care.

Just remember her insult to the nation when the frothy sycophantic media beg her to run for president in 2016.

Moreover, get a load of what she says about the cause of the attack in these two sentences – and how wholly and completely inconsistent and contradictory they are:

“What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and to do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, senator.”

Read that again: “What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened...” Hello? If it’s her job to figure out what happened in the attack, how can the cause of it possibly be irrelevant? It’s just nonsensical.

But that’s what happens when you try to gin up undue indignation in an effort to somehow look heroic instead of culpable. It’s what happens when you think that combativeness is a defense.

Meanwhile, notice what else made the news Wednesday: The Department of Defense suddenly decided to drop the bombshell that it will allow women in combat. Could that have been a diversionary tactic to make the Clinton story less conspicuous? If so, it worked: It led several nightly newscasts and may have been responsible for knocking the Clinton story off of front pages.

America today appears to be that easily manipulated, that successfully lied to and filibustered. And so many Americans don’t seem to notice or care.

Regrettably, in the end, Mrs. Clinton may be right. It may not matter after all.

Susan Rice

How can a government let the UN Ambassador go on and on with a false story when they know the truth? Couldn't Hillary or Obama have called up Susan Rice and told her the truth? It's time for this to go down in history for what it was...a cover-up so it wouldn't hurt Obama's election chances. It worked, too.

WE have the "green energy" scandal

WE have the "green energy" scandal, billions upon billions of dollars given to companies that had no thought of ever making a profit, just get government money and fail, many Obama supporters and bundlers. Nobody has been prosecuted, no investigations and a yawn form the Journo-lists! We have the Fast and Furious, 2,000 guns smuggled into Mexico. Over 300 Mexicans dead and a US boarder agent dead. No interests by the Journo-lists, no investigation, lies by Holder and no one in jail for violating state, local and international law. Now we have Benghazi, 4 Americans dead, one a US ambassador, guns and weapons from Libya being used to kill Americans in the oil refinery attack, no interest by the journo-lists, no body held responsible and America shamed by our leaders lying to the citizens and the World! Oh well hail der leader!

I watched the brief story on ABC News and caught the video/audio of Clinton waving her arms and looking skyward and raising her voice (which did eerily sound like a Middle Eastern wail) at the hearing. But unlike ACES, I thought the questioning senator (I can't remember which senator asked the question) was getting at the Obama administration's spin of the cause, not the actual cause itself.

What matters is the fact that the Obama administration lied to the American people about the cause. It does make a difference. And Riverman is absolutely correct to call the sordid affair (including Secretary Clinton's hystrionics) a cover-up.

As kryptonite is to superman

As kryptonite is to superman so facts are to liberals. Gunner runner was done with the cooperation of the Mexican government, Fast and Furious had no Mexican government involvement. Just one of a few differances. You can find the rest here! http://townhall.com/tipsheet/katiepavlich/2011/03/09/atf_operation_gun_r... Interesting that Techfan hyperventilates about The Cia Operative whose name was leaked by a Democrat hanger on (the Valarie Phlame case) but no indignation about Project Sam Addams which outed real CIA agents and field operatives. Never mind that Obama outed all kinds of information that inabled the Pakistanies to figure out the name of the Dr. that collected the DNA that fingered Ben Laden, arrest him and hold him in jail. The Special prosecuter in the Phlame case actually knew who the perp was very early (Richard Armitage) but continued the investiagtion until he got Scooter Libbby on a technicality! Oh well liberals rewrite history all the time, nothing new here!

Just goes to prove that if you have the mainsteam media in your corner you can screw up EVERYTHING you touch and still manage make it seem its the GOP that is the enemy.

The Obama administration has screwed up everything they have touched and managed to double our debt while doing it and our gullible electorate still think they are just angelic. This administration has certainly helped me understand how the Nazis came to power in Germany.

One thing about it, Hillary is just as good a "truth-dodger" as her husband! It still doesn't change the fact of what the Truth is.........Did anyone notice how witchy Hillary looked when having her "hissy-fit moments", and that long hair didn't help either. Oooooooooh-eeeee! We women can't help but notice EVERYTHING!

First we have an African American President and then possibly a woman as the next President. What are all the angry old white men going to think. To me the best part of Secretary Clinton's testimony was a very competent woman facing a group of lightweights who were fishing for face time in front of the cameras. Rand Paul as president. That is one of the best jokes I have heard in many years.

History

There is a long history of attacks on American embassies. Many of them have been successful. They were not anticipated and they were successful because the attacks managed in some way to defeat the existing security. They have occurred during Republican administrations as well as Democratic administrations, in countries that are friendly to the U.S. (Saudi Arabia, Pakistan) as well as those hostile to U.S. interests. There is no a justification for trying to conceal the reasons behind any attack on Americans. But there is also no evidence of some huge conspiracy by the media to cover up. Even Fox News admits that the network overhyped the whole Benghazi coverage and blew its coverage all out of proportion.

Facts vs rhetoric

Two hours after the attack, it was reported by the State Department that the Islamic military group "Ansar al-Sharia Claims Responsibilty for Benghazi Attack." The day after the attack, Obama was interviewed by Steve Kroft of "60 Minutes." Obama stated then and for the record that he did not believe the attack was just mob violence, "my suspicion is that there are folks involved in this who were looking to target Americans from the start." So why did the idea of mob violence get into the reporting after that? Good question, and I don't think Hilary Clinton really answered it.

Hillary's hystrionics yesterday....

...grew out of and was a classic example of the advice of soldier and military theorist Carl von Clausewitz, who said "The best defense is a good offense".

In politics it can be roughly translated as, deny any failure, admit no mistakes, accept no criticism, attack those who question your position.

That advice works particularly well when you have the major media outlets in your hip pocket.

Guess I had gone for a cup of coffee when that "admission" was made.

"But there is also no evidence of some huge conspiracy by the media to cover up."

No, what there is, is media bias on an unprecedented scale. For example, the hostage taking and invasion of our embassy in Iran under Carter, if mentioned at all is normally shown as an historical event and is seldom, if ever, linked to Carter's leadership.

On the other hand, the same media can't mention the attack on the Marine post in Lebanon without mentioning Ronald Reagan's "failure of leadership" or "poor judgment".

Neither Riverman nor I said that there was a media cover-up. The cover-up was a strategy between the Obama presidential campaign committee and the Obama administration. The mainstream media merely went along as willing accomplices.

Exactly. Take the hint. Islamic militants attacked a Western installation in an unstable African nation? No **** Sherlock.

High-profile Americans in a high-risk job were fatally targeted by violent nut jobs? People support sending American soldiers into the exact same situation. Where's the outrage when THEY are murdered? You think White House officials never got a cable saying "uh, our soldiers are in a threatening situation"? What's the response to that? "It's their patriotic duty! Send MORE of them into a lethal situation!" The disconnect by some politically-obsessed individuals between these parallel situations is mind-blowing. Islamic militants killed four Americans in a post-revolutionary, unstable African country and people are obsessed about the timing of the narrative, to the extent that they are wasting our time and money with hearings that achieve nothing. Zero results.

If all we want in Washington are people uniquely positioned to point fingers and flap their lips about things that produce ZERO concrete results, we could send a bunch of preschoolers instead of Congressmen and save ourselves a fortune in tax dollars.

Hillary said Chris Stevens

Hillary said Chris Stevens went to Benghazi at HER request...that he was the most qualified person....She never said WHY he (or any other party) was needed there. She deftly avoided answering that question and Congress gave her a pass.

I am hoping this paragraph was perhaps sarcastic, because if not, it would show the lack of knowledge of how war and military are SUPPOSED to operate. Kind of common sense stuff to be honest. Find a friend in the military if not that brave to join oneself and be a part of the proud and learn morale.

The outcome of allowing our own to be murdered with no repercussion is the clearest example of weakness and fear. And those are the things that enemies live to obtain. Its fuel to the fire. They become more motivated to do more damage. "If a snake thinks that his bite has no effect on you, he will give up and stop biting." (I hate snakes and dumb ppl, all the same)

There were repeated attacks on western interests and our ambassador was left without the resources to be protected! Chris Stevens sent messages saying the security was in adequate. carcraft, take it that next

carcraft, take it that next step. The ambassador was in hostile territory, as are American soldiers. If a fatality in hostile territory is the result of inadequate security, then every soldier's death in hostile territory is the product of INADEQUATE SECURITY. So where's the outrage then? Explain to me how people reconcile these two polar opposite responses to the deaths of Americans in hostile territory -- deaths that are equally the results of inadequate security. If the response of people were the same to these two situations, there would likely be a great level of respect for the sustained intensity of attention devoted to Benghazi. That the responses are not the same makes the partisan motivation behind this whole thing so clear that a sleeping dog could get it.

A further reason that fatalities in our troops are as deserving of this type of outrage is that THEY have no choice within the law but to remain in situations of inadequate security. Stevens was a civilian. If he were truly in fear for his life, he could have resigned his post at any moment.

Burninater, when you are in a

Burninater, when you are in a hostile area, as I was in Bosnia EVERY precaution is taken. You are given arms and ammunition, movement is restricted, surveillance of the perimeters are guarded by security forces. It seems that Stevens was denied this. Combat arms troops are expected to be in hostile areas and sustain fire and injuries. When a combat commander thinks he does not have enough forces and fire power to deal with a potential threat those resources are provide if possible. Ambassador Stevens realized he was in danger and was DENIED the security and forces he needed. In combat arms if a commander misses intelligence and ignores warnings about threats and he sustains a loss as our State Department did the commander gets relieved and his career is over. So far nobody has faced the music in the state department! So there is your difference!
