A different green for Gore

Current TV founders cash in with oil barons

  • Follow Editorials

They sold out – in more ways than one, and just in time to lower their tax burden.

Liberal network “Current TV” founders Al Gore and Joel Hyatt recently announced the sale of the cable brand to Qatar-based Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera apparently will shut down the Current TV channel and launch Al Jazeera America in its place.

Critics noted the potential hypocrisy of Al Gore – Mr. Green Energy – selling out to a company that represents folks with a lot of interest in oil.

In addition, the sale was negotiated just before the new year’s round of tax increases on wealthy Americans – so, conveniently enough, less money would go to the government.

And you thought paying more in taxes was the patriotic thing to do! Did Gore and Co. get out of “paying their fair share”?

Regardless, the liberal lions of Current TV were sold out – and, indeed, Democratic luminaries of Current TV such as former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer jumped ship immediately after the sale to Al Jazeera.

You have to wonder what the commentators on Current TV would’ve said about, oh, Rupert Murdoch selling Fox News to Al Jazeera – and timing it expressly to send less money to the U.S. government.

But Al Gore doing it – and selling out to the land of oil barons?

That’s just rich.

And we wonder why we're in debt....
Unpublished

Soooo.....we are in debt because a "rich" person who pays more in one year in taxes, than many make in their entire life time used a "loophole" to save 1%(or whatever % you want to argue)? Or because the government continues to spend money foolishly? Obama wasted more money on....battery plants,lol....and the alike then more than a few "rich" man saved on taxes legally. Why you messin' wit the "rich" man for? Where is Obama's blame? Or can he do no wrong?

that even though those that work, get taxes out of their check, that at the end of the year if you are getting $5k-$13K etc BACK because of children etc (LOOPHOLES so to speak).....then you are not contributing to anything, right?

Why is it ok for "you" and not for the "rich"? It is greedy to want someone else to give more money then you can even imagine ever having.

Funny...

Lower class people can barely live? They all have top of the line cell phones, top of the line clothes and shoes, nice cars or cars with 4k worth of rims and tires and either lower rent or rent free places to live yet they can barely make it? That's the biggest liberal joke I have ever heard!!

loopholes

First, work on the loopholes that allow the ppl with iphones, ipads, caddy's w/spinners, gold in the mouth, jordon's on the feet etc to get government housing, food, and medical. After all Personal Finance 101 teaches it is easier to cut back then to make more money. Works the same for the GOV.

Oh wait, or do democrats just want that done to the "rich" who have a boat and a few nice cars that they paid for with their own money?

1999 Prince Claus Award for

1999 Prince Claus Award for "Creating Spaces of Freedom", in Amsterdam

In December 1999, Ibn Rushd (Averoes) Fund for Freedom of Thought in Berlin awarded the "Ibn Rushd Award" for media and journalism for the year to Al Jazeera.[132]

In March 2003, Al Jazeera was awarded by Index on Censorship for its "courage in circumventing censorship and contributing to the free exchange of information in the Arab world."[133]

In April 2004, the Webby Awards nominated Al Jazeera as one of the five best news Web sites, along with BBC News, National Geographic, RocketNews and The Smoking Gun. According to Tifanny Schlain, the founder of the Webby Awards, this caused a controversy as [other media organisations] "felt it was a risk-taking site".[134]

During the 2011 Egyptian protests, the online magazine Salon.com wrote that "Al Jazeera's Egypt coverage embarrasses U.S. cable news channels.",[136] and WikiLeaks commented on their Twitter feed that "Yes, we may have helped Tunisia, Egypt. But let us not forget the elephant in the room: Al Jazeera + sat dishes".[137]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Jazeera

These are some of the journalism awards and high-profile accolades al Jazeera has received.

I don't know that you'll find rigorous analyses of "provable fact" comparing the quality of the world's various media outlets because it would be mind-bogglingly expensive. (Imagine the process -- sitting down with years worth of 24-hour print/web/broadcast reporting from dozens of news agencies and fact-checking each story while cross-comparing coverage quality of each story by each outlet ...).

But from the standpoint of many media-watching organizations and individuals, al Jazeera is in fact a highly regarded agency. One of the most significant contributions they are credited with is fighting censorship and democratizing media coverage and discourse in the Middle East.

HA, you may want to pay

HA, you may want to pay closer attention to what you read.

Your first and third links are from Friends of Syria wordpress. "Friends of Syria" is an international working group formed after China and Russia vetoed UN action against the Syrian dictator al Bashar.

If you read the "Friends of Syria WORDPRESS" "About" page, you will discover that this is not a blog by the "Friends of Syria" international working group. Rather, you will find that it is a pro-al Assad blog that seeks to show that the Western world is "full of lies" and that President al Assad is a benign ruler.

Since multiple civilian mass murders by the al Bashar regime have been documented, including mortar shelling of refugees across the Turkish border (!), I find it hard to credit a blog praising al Assad when it calls al Jazeera part of the conspiracy of lies concerning their "benevolent" al Assad.

Now, your second link. The interviewer asks the resigned journalist his SPECIFIC reasons for viewing al Jazeera as biased. You will find his answer after the line "Can you give an example of what you mean?": his specific reasons were that he felt al Jazeera was not balanced enough in its coverage of the negative humanist aspects of violent overthrow of a dictatorship. He felt that nonviolence was not given equal time -- that the fact that Qaddafi was killed during his overthrow was not sufficiently condemned. Also, the negative humanist aspects of a violent opposition to al Assad was not sufficiently covered, in his opinion.

I applaud your apparent pacifism on this last one HA, although it seems somewhat out of character. Perhaps I have misunderstood some of your prior posts.

The other thing I can't stand

The other thing I can't stand aboutt AL Gore is the fact that he cast the tie breaking vote for ethanol. Now he says it was mistake! Well Al's little mistake has cost me a leaf blower, $90 dollar in mower repairs and now I have to take my chain saw into get fixed. We have wasted billions of dollars on ethanol and now Al says it was a mistake! Thanks for nothing Al!

Al Jazeera maybe a great news

Al Jazeera maybe a great news organization! When compared to US news services it is not a very high bar! Take the health care report on the front page today. What wasn't said was that if you take the gang bangers out US statistics we live ad long as those in other countries! Now is gang bangers a health care issue, a so socialogical issue, or a criminal issue!

Thanks for reminding me of that BS.

Who in their right mind would take Gore seriously?

Have you ever noticed how the presidential nominees always choose lesser esteemed candidates for their VP? Guess they don't want to be out shown by their VP's.
