A different green for Gore

Current TV founders cash in with oil barons

  • Follow Editorials

They sold out – in more ways than one, and just in time to lower their tax burden.

Liberal network “Current TV” founders Al Gore and Joel Hyatt recently announced the sale of the cable brand to Qatar-based Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera apparently will shut down the Current TV channel and launch Al Jazeera America in its place.

Critics noted the potential hypocrisy of Al Gore – Mr. Green Energy – selling out to a company that represents folks with a lot of interest in oil.

In addition, the sale was negotiated just before the new year’s round of tax increases on wealthy Americans – so, conveniently enough, less money would go to the government.

And you thought paying more in taxes was the patriotic thing to do! Did Gore and Co. get out of “paying their fair share”?

Regardless, the liberal lions of Current TV were sold out – and, indeed, Democratic luminaries of Current TV such as former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer jumped ship immediately after the sale to Al Jazeera.

You have to wonder what the commentators on Current TV would’ve said about, oh, Rupert Murdoch selling Fox News to Al Jazeera – and timing it expressly to send less money to the U.S. government.

But Al Gore doing it – and selling out to the land of oil barons?

That’s just rich.

"You have to wonder what the commentators on Current TV would’ve said about, oh, Rupert Murdoch selling Fox News to Al Jazeera"?
Fox's parent company News Corp already has Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal as its second largest shareholder behind the Murdochs.
" Did Gore and Co. get out of “paying their fair share”?" Yep, just like Romney and a goodly chunk of the wealthy in the US. The tax laws here are written for the wealthy and they use every loophole they can. Will the AC join us in calling for the elimination of these loopholes so this kind of manipulation doesn't exist? We'll eagerly await an editorial supporting their elimination.

Smack beside the head

Some people you just want to smack beside the head. Remember when Gore in a bizarre way walked over to Bush during their debate and Bush rolled his eyes at him making the audience laugh. W should have decked him right there. Gore would sell Tennessee if he could.

ROMNEY did pay his fair

ROMNEY did pay his fair share...everyone who claims capital gains pay the same rate...investment money has already been taxed once at normal rates...but the LEFT KNOW THIS....they just like to keep repeating lies..it becomes reality for them..an enconmy to grow needs investment money...with capital gains comes capital loss ...does the tax code need to be changed ..you betch ya..flat tax ...all need to have skin in the game as far as paying income tax....but you cannot penalize capital for success....no capital no growth..a concept the left doesnt understand..example ..PELOSI claiming food stamps an economic stimulus..

Yeah, an average of 14% on

Yeah, an average of 14% on over $35 million (it would have been lower but he deliberately didn't take some deductions so he wouldn't drop below the 13% rate he claimed) is a fair rate. And we wonder why we're in debt. We've dropped the rates for the uber wealthy and given them so many deductions that payroll taxes are bringing in almost as much revenue as income taxes.

Techfan misses the point,

Techfan misses the point, Capital gains taxes are going to rise so Gore selling now avoids that increase. It is like John Kerry and his yacht, built in New Zeeland and berthed in New Jersey to avoid taxes. It is called hypocrisy and the left is full of it. The laws apply to everyone but them. Check out turbo tax Geithner and the fellow from North Dakota, Tommy Daschle, along with Charlie Wrangle to view more Democrats and liberals for people that want others to pay their fair share but seem to think they have a right to avoid the law! For hypocrisy on gun control See Dianne Feinstein and gun control, she doesn't want anyone else to have a gun but wants to pack her glock also check out Rosie O’Donnell and Carl Rowan for more of the Lefts hypocrisy!

Techfan, How much investment

Techfan, How much investment capital have you invested? Look at Obama's investment in green energy and how many of those companies made money. I think Obama is about 0 for 40 in that area. It isn't simple or easy. Yet like most on the left you don't think they do anything to earn it. If people did not invest in businesses or ideas where would the personal computer, the cell phones, new medical devices, new medications, research into packaging, and products be. Yet every time you invest you run a high risk of losing. Then when the company has a profit the profit gets taxed (America has one of the highest corporate taxes in the world). From what is left you get a profit then that profit gets taxed AGAIN. I neither can afford to lose that much money or am I smart enough. Romney has a better record than Buffet! After all if Obama and his energy secretary, a Nobel Prize winner, can't do better with green energy what chance do I have? I know Obama was betting with tax dollars but anyway..

Eliminate the loopholes so

Eliminate the loopholes so they can't shelter income in other countries. Count all money you get as income and subject to payroll tax. Eliminate all deductions for individuals and corporations. We will have to keep a graduated rate scale or the lower income people couldn't afford to live (they're pretty much there now).

Whenever someone uses the term "uber wealthy" you automatically know that what they are saying is based only on wealth envy. There is no other explanation.

Also....Murdoch never proclaimed to be a leader in the "green" world, so if he sold FOX to Al Jazeera, there wouldn't be the same hypocrisy as with Gore......but the left just can't stop from being hypocritical....can they?

Just the mention of the name

Just the mention of the name Al Gore makes me sick. If you look up the word hypocrite in the dictionary you will see a picture of Al Gore. He may be the most egotistical man on planet earth. Every cause he has taken up since he lost the election has served to enrich himself. It is reported he is worth almost a billion dollars. He could not care less who is damaged in the process. Most often the victim is America.

Techfan...I wish you could live in the world your polices would create. You could just move to Russia for a few year and report back.

Why do you think China is building so many coal fired power plants. We already can't compete with China and if they have cheap energy and we are stuck with windmills they will be the world superpower in 20 years.

It is amazing to listen to

It is amazing to listen to liberal like techfan complain about Americans that work 80 hours a week, play by the rules, obey the laws and pay their taxes according to the laws of the land, yet they are "evil" in his eyes. Many look to Europe as the ideal however they have been successful at eliminating the middle class which is the charge made by liberals about America. Europe has made it almost impossible to climb the ladder by almost eliminating property ownership for all but the most wealth. At least there is still a chance to climb up the ladder in America but the window is closing fast. Europe is in worse financial shape than we are and in the countries that are deciding to solve their financial woes by taxing the rich, the rich are leaving. This is were techfan need to move so he can experience first hand how great it will be living in a country without the "evil" rich. Utopia...at last !

The first loophole I would like to see eliminated is the Earned Income Tax Credit.

" Did Gore and Co. get out of

" Did Gore and Co. get out of “paying their fair share”

Gore is just another of the "do as I say, not as I do" pseudo-intellectual hypocrite ruling class liberals of the same ilk that we have in control now.

Obama wants to take our guns even though WE will provide him and his family armed security for life. The media who support gun control and are publishing the names and address of battered women and victims of stalking are hiring armed guards to protect their workplace. Hypocrites, all of them are hypocrites.

They don't pay any federal taxes and holler to take more from other people. Hypocrites. They don't pay any federal taxes and yet they want a REFUND under the Earned Income Tax Credit. Hypocrites.

They are mad because Romney paid 14% income taxes because they want him to pay 40%. But most of them paid $0, ZERO, nothing. Hypocrites. I personally do not think ANYONE should pay any more than 10% to our dictatorial government for federal income tax and I think EVERYONE should pay that 10%.....even welfare recipients and people on unemployment benefits. Put some skin in the game and THEN you can complain about things. Otherwise you are just a HYPOCRITE.

The AC doesn't have that kind of backbone.

However, if it wrote such an article, it wouldn't be without some type of "fair and balanced" twist to get itself off the hook.

As to Al Jazeera, most of the commentors on here will put it down simply because it is (presently, at least) an Arab managed news network.

But the fact is that Al Jazeera has more open and honest world news than the American media is willing to report.

(Now, I invite you sit back and watch the comments of our usual conservatives as they attempt to discredit and howl at my/your comments).

Dahreese......" But the fact is that Al Jazeera has more open and honest world news than the American media is willing to report." I know this is asking a lot, but would you be willing to back that up with facts? Not an attempt to discredit....just curious if you are willing to back up what you say. Given past posts, and requests for facts, I am not holding my breath.

Unless you're afraid of what you might find, you can read it online just as well as millions of other Americans do.

www.aljazeera.com

The reporting and writing is first rate, and, they've lost as many reporters reporting on Middle East wars as any other news agency.

I didn't ask for a homework assignment. I asked YOU to back up the statement YOU made. Why do liberals always want someone else to do their work for them?

So my suspicions were right....you CAN'T back it up. Just state your opinion a couple of more times and hope people think it is a fact. Love that liberal arguing technique.

"What kind of facts?"...

She told you, "Provable facts". If it can't be proven, then it can't be established as a fact now can it? Sort of like Obama's failed Keynesian economic theory. Fails every time it's tried but without it, there is no foundation for the Democrat agenda.
