What are they teaching?

Crude cartoon serves up warped interpretation of free market

  • Follow Editorials

These are the people teaching children in California?

The California Federation of Teachers has produced an animated video, narrated by far-left actor Ed Asner, that is as blatant a commercial for socialism – or worse – than anything Fidel Castro or the old Soviet Union could’ve put together.

The video argues that rich people are evil and obtained their wealth, as the Hollywood Reporter summed it up, “through tax loopholes, tax cuts and tax evasion.”

Somehow, hard work, long days and nights, skill, talent and dedication don’t figure into success, according to the California teachers.

Most outrageously, though, the unrepentant propaganda cartoon actually depicts a rich person urinating on the less well-off.

Now, Asner is an avowed socialist who doesn’t buy into the very free market system he’s lived quite well off of for decades. He has that right. But heaven help us if that video or its anti-capitalist views are allowed to poison our children’s minds.

“The idea that there are any California teachers currently in classrooms in charge of children who agree with that is horrifying,” conservative commentator Tucker Carlson concluded after seeing it.

“It was pretty bad. I have to say, even I found it offensive,” adds liberal commentator Kirsten Powers. “It was too much demonizing for my taste.”

Time was when parents could rest easy in the knowledge that American schools were teaching their children the ins and outs of the American free enterprise system. Not so today. Today, you’ve got socialists paid to be in the classrooms – and an organization such as Junior Achievement, which teaches the values and methods of entrepreneurship, passing the hat to get into limited numbers of schools.

Is it any wonder that socialism – which teaches that wealth should be shared without regard to who produced it or how responsible the recipient of the transferred wealth is – is on the rise in America?

Indeed, Gallup says 53 percent of Democrats have a positive view of socialism.

Interestingly, Merriam-Webster this week announced that the words of the year – the “most looked-up” – were capitalism and socialism.

Keep reading, kids!

In fact, here’s a suggestion. How about the California teachers’ next video be about the many benefits of socialism? About how a person can go to school and work and strive to better himself and one day succeed, only to be told that he “didn’t build that” and isn’t paying his “fair share” and must give more of what he earns to someone else who didn’t earn it. Oh, and make sure to note that the system has never worked for long, and is about as immoral a political system as you can dream up.

We can’t wait to see that video!

"Rich" Privilege

ACES, I'm not sure what your gripe is about.

The animation was basically true. Rich people have become rich off of the backs of the low-wage worker. They get all sorts of corporate welfare, subsidies, loopholes, tax breaks, etc. They ship jobs overseas and have no problem paying some poor child in a foreign country pennies a day to manufacture their product under inhumane conditions.

Banks charge the customers who can least afford it, outrageous fees on their own money. These companies are never satisfied with a fair profit, they are only happy when they make an obscene profit. These companies slash wages and benefits and labor to please the corporate board.

It is almost comical to say that these corporations "earn" a profit. They are much too greedy to "earn" anything. When you cut expenses like employees and benefits, and increase the fees you charge customers for your product or service, just because you can (like billion-dollar oil companies) you are just plain greedy.

Maybe ACES believes the old trickle-down theory of wealth. Maybe you guys believe that "everybody has the same opportunity in America". Well, try living as a poor, uneducated person in this country and see how far that will take you.

IMO, in this country with

IMO, in this country with free education and benefits for schooling, someone who is poor because they are uneducated, does so because they don't care enough to help themselves. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to be uneducated in this country. Everyone, even those who are here illegally, have the opportunity to go to school and learn.....it's whether you apply yourself or not.

People in this country have no clue what poor really is.

There is absolutely no reason for anyone to be uneducated in this country??? If this is true why is this country so far behind countries like China in educational achievement? They are kicking our rear ends in educating their children.

Why is it considered greedy to want to keep what you earned, but not to want to take money from those who earned it and give it to those who didn't?

Ultrarnr and Specsta

Ultrarnr, it's certainly not lack of money being poured into our public schools. We spend much more on education per pupil than China. Their success is due to the same reason seen in some school districts here....parental involvement.

Specsta's post is surprising because it is an outright attack on capitalism while promoting socialism. I guess I should expect such attacks these days, but it's still shocking. If the Soviet Union had held on for another 20 years, they would have it made with their new allies in America.

We have a progressive tax

We have a progressive tax system that the rich pay more-by definition. The assertion that the "Rich people have become rich off of the backs of the low-wage worker' is absurd-and illogical. The rich have benefited off the backs of low-wage workers AND low-wage workers benefit of the backs of the rich. It is a two way street. By the logic of these posters then the rich should have more say in govt too because they are footing 70% of the bill. Y'all want to got there?

Do you know WHY companies (the evil rich) ship jobs overseas? Because our government has seen to it that outsourcing is more profitable. NOW they want to raise taxes on those same eivil rich, and make outsourcing even MORE profitable.....then the left will continue to blame it on the rich.....because it could never be Obama and the Democrats fault.

The issue is we have a

The issue is we have a discriminatin' president who hate rich folks-the tax the rich mantra isn't a fiscal or economic solution-just a social manipulation. He demonized the rich who basically pay the bulk of his and every other govt employees salary. Now that rich are dehumanized to immoral, illegal, thieves then it helps him to rationalize stealing from the rich to give the poor. Really sick mental health. Without the top earners taxes we wouldn't have the income to have any entitlement, defense, infrastructure, etc. The fact is everyones taxes will have to increase. The strategy is first demonize the tip of the iceberg then chip away to the base. The govt is all about taking all of your money to spend on itself.

In totalitarian states

In totalitarian states where the people worship the leader in a cult like way, a scapegoat is necessary. The rich will be loaded onto trains before this is over and shipped to work camps.

How many of you are rich?

And have you really been voting in your own best interests?

Fun fact: the world's best public schools are in the former Warsaw Pact nations, where communism may have passed on, but the people still believe in such things as social responsibility.

Question, ACES: do you object to teaching our students the truth about America's Gilded Age? History repeats for those who fail to learn from it, you know...

Self Interest

Human beings are egocentric. We worry about ourselves first. It's the way we are built and indeed we would not have survived, if it were not for this character of our makeup. Some, in order to promote their own ends, choose to call this greed. OK, we're all greedy to one extent or another. Capitalism plays to our human nature because it rewards our hard work and greed. Socialism fails in the end because people, in time, will not continue to work when the fruits of their labors are taken away by force. Under the old soviet system, the standing joke was; "We pretend to work and they pretend to pay us."

Really is it any of our

Really is it any of our business if it altruism or greed that drives people to excel and be successful-as we all benefit. The Fords, Gates, Jobs, etc create an industry and jobs that didn't exist before. Everyone benefits. I understand Ford was a greedy piece of dog manure but Jobs and Gates seem like righteous dudes. Anyway we all benefit. Just like a scientific discovery made by one individual benefits all science and those who follow. Some people have a perverse world view of society and the economy as some pie to be divided.
