Richmond County Sheriff: Freddie Sanders

  • Follow Editorials

Freddie Sanders has an extensive résumé in both law enforcement and the courts. He has a lifelong dedication to justice, public safety and to the community he was born and educated in.

And he has one other thing no other candidate for sheriff here could boast: the respect and closest possible friendship with retiring legendary Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength.

So, while Strength officially endorsed Sanders for sheriff in August, the unofficial endorsement has been their decades-long friendship – a bond made as dedicated co-workers in the sheriff’s office years ago, where their fathers also worked. While working together, Sanders and Strength also found common cause in exposing a corrupt sheriff who later went to prison after they stood up to him.

“We went together” to the FBI to report the corruption, Strength says. “I know (Sanders’) character. I don’t know anything Freddie Sanders would not do for anybody.”

Sanders’ firefighting career, which he began as a volunteer in high school, was cut short when he was seriously injured in an explosion. He ended up on a law enforcement track, where he served the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office in road patrol, narcotics, violent crimes and more, and the

Richmond County Police Department, where he was police chief until the position was eliminated. He ended up carving out one of this area’s most illustrious legal careers at Capers, Dunbar, Sanders & Bellotti.

By experience, record, demeanor, character – and by the company he keeps – we believe Freddie Sanders is head and shoulders the most qualified sheriff’s candidate on the Richmond County ballot Tuesday.

We respectfully ask you to vote for Freddie Sanders for sheriff.

No thanks, I'll be voting for

No thanks, I'll be voting for Richard Roundtree.

Here is the problem - "So, while Strength officially endorsed Sanders for sheriff in August, the unofficial endorsement has been their decades-long friendship – a bond made as dedicated co-workers in the sheriff’s office years ago, where their fathers also worked." ACES

Freddie Sanders will just keep that same good 'ol boy network in the Sheriff's Office in full effect. Augusta is well past those old days. It is the 21st century.

The RCSO need to be trained and accredited and bring their standards up to a professionally-recognized level of achievement. Roundtree will do that. Freddie is just more of the same old-fashioned Barney Fife style of management as perfected by Strength. The old "lock 'em up and leave 'em" mentality. Time for something new.

Finally AC...heh

You need money to make a difference in Richmond county....Freddie knows the players downtown....he not only knows the Sheriffs job he also knows what it will take to make a change in the crime stats.....it is not just riding shotgun in a police car anymore......
Losing this chance to make the right man Sheriff would be a shame.....make history by changing the dynamics in where the MONEY IS GOING.......put him (Freddie)in office & REALLY make a difference...

Chronicle, Did This Hurt?

From being bombarded in previous elections for weeks before the vote, we get THIS, TWO DAYS before the election. The verbiage is noticeably milder with this little perfunctory statement. You note Sanders is friends with Strength, the same man you were upset with in the past votes due to his early neutrality.

SeenIt, good point.

SeenIt, good point. Earlier you made a good point, too, about the money. What I learned a long time ago with elections for sheriff, vote the opposite of where the questionable money is going. Strength and Sanders proved their honesty when they took on a corrupt sheriff.

LL, any sheriff who serves at

LL, any sheriff who serves at least 10 years in Richmond or Columbia Counties becomes a legend and has at least one public building named after him. True?

Public Buildings

Don't get me started on naming public buildings and streets, roads, highways, and bridges after politicians.

And, by the way, I agree with several posters up above that this is probably the most tepid Chronicle endorsement ever published.

Yeah, RM, but Augusta can make a mayor legendary in only one term.

If you look at Freddie

If you look at Freddie Sanders record and background, and compare it to Richard Roundtree's record and background, and I am talking work record, financial records, everything.....it is just absolutely apparent to me that Richard Roundtree is more of a candidate to be IN the jail instead of running the jail.

If Roundtree wins this election you can chalk it up as a purely race based vote....and a sign of what's to come in the "City of Augusta". I certainly can understand the black community wanting to support the black candidate but if Roundtree is the best they've got....well, I would be ashamed to support him. Voting for Roundtree is an admission that this is the best they can do. Even staunch Republicans are questioning whether to support Anderson and I wish the open minded members of our black community would show the same concern about supporting Roundtree. It is just SO obvious that Sanders has the integrity and experience to do a much better job than his opponent.

VOTE SANDERS FOR SHERIFF. It's not about race. It's about integrity and ability and we all know Roundtree comes up short in both categories. Sanders is a habitual succeeder. If you look at Roundtree's record on taxes, sexual encounters with co-workers, and job performce he would be more correctly identified as a habitual offender.

I find it very ironic how

I find it very ironic how some white people are telling the community a win for Roundtree is based on race. The same white people are voting for Sanders, but never mention race.

It's a small minority of people who continue to focus on race. Deke Copenhaver(white male) won two straight elections with over 60% of the vote, and Matt Aitken is the commissioner in district 1(the CBD & Olde Town are really the only 'white' areas in district 1).

I think Roundtree fell apart

I think Roundtree fell apart years ago when he left sensitive criminal case files in an apartment he vacated. How can you possibly want to elect someone this inept for Sherriff!
